I keep trying to and no luck yet. AGAIN it has to dry before I try again. I mix it too light, or too dark, and end up with pale blues or ridiculously dark skies. There's some middle ground I'm not able to mix yet for some reason.

I think it's honestly the blue I'm using, Cobalt blue gets super chalky super quickly, but the from the tube color is super darker. I guess maybe I could try to do a wash of it? I literally don't think theres a way to retain saturation in it while mixing.

Don't copy photos, do some studies from other artists to understand skin colours. Usually you have bits of brownish warm shades, cold halftones and cold highlights. Also different face parts tend to have a bit of a different tint

try to make your shape language more arbitrary. Make the tree spoke out in random directions, actual trees are very nonsensical when it comes to perspective, they grow out towards you, up, back down, to the side, away. Trees can be a great exercise to loosen up your perspective skills. Don't just make them grow straight up all the time

Mom has for some reason decided I should paint some wooden objects (like our bag holder) with "cool drawings".

What paint should I use for that, acrylic? Do I need to apply varnish afterwards?

I only have experience with oils and they were awesome for blending, not so sure acrylic will offer me as much flexibility. I'll ask her to buy Red Blue Yellow White Black paints and see what comes out of it. And whatever brush + water.

oil needs primed pages to prevent the oil soaking in, and wax paper to protect the painting from the previous page.
acrylic needs a special palette setup to keep the squeezed paints from drying on you.
gouache usually needs at least mixed media paper that can handle a bit of water.
gouache can be put into pans and carried around in a minimal setup.
test acrylic and gouache in your sketchbook and see which one handles the paper in it better.

Why should I care about lightfastness if I'm just starting out? I need something basic and cheap yet decent enough. So I bought a set of 12 Koh-i-Noor sticks, they're actually pretty good, but the palette is too limited. Also, I bought a rather cheap pastel sketchbook with textured paper, but it's pretty bad at holding multiple layers of pastel. So today I bought some sheets of Canson Mi-Teintes of various colors, as well as some more pastels. I bought a few sticks of Rembrandt, one Schminke, a set of 12 colours of cheap locally produced pastels that people on Youtube said were good (they aren't), a set of 32 Mungyos (they're great), as well as a few sticks of Faber-Castel hard pastels, and a white pastel pencil.

Yeah, I don't think I'm ready for primers yet, and pads are quite expensive. As I said I bought some paper. I also bought some sandpaper as some Youtubers suggested, and I have to tell you, sandpaper is awesome. Even shitty pastels feel great on it, leave vivid marks, and can be applied in several layers no problem. The finer grained sheet I bought produces very smooth uniform color, and the rougher one has texture.

Well in the west of the netherlands, artschools are more focussed on design and following current trends in fine art. Quite politically correct, i'm talking about Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, etc. Also Utrecht. These days, you'll get extra rep if you are not a white man, gay, or genderfluid. BUT, there are some smaller artschools. Those are waay better. They are not into any education format at all. Like, at my school, i can be really serious friends with my teachers, I can drink with them and go in depth about our work. Really get to the bottom of it. Also, the students are all about making their own criteria. And we get the support. It's more about developing the self, instead of chasing an idea.

mind of watercolor has a video on gouache brands I think. really depends what country youre in however, if a brand has a lightfast/wool scale on their paint and is cheap and easy to get near you, then spending twice as much on a luxery brand from italy or whatever is unnecessary. you'll want to compare how big the tubes are for the cost also.

what makes you think I like shiny anime girls? not that it’s worth anything, but some of my favorite artists are Courbet, Rubens, Michelangelo, Picasso, Basquiat, Warhol, Monet, Gauguin, de Kooning, El Greco, Rauschenberg, Rothko, Pollock, Klimt, Degas, Cezanne, Koons, Matisse, Titian, Condo, Corot, and Renoir.

I frankly don’t give a shit about “rendering,” “form,” “color,” “line,” “contour,” “shape,” or any of that shit.
What matters is duende. Brian could easily have duende if he wanted it, but it doesn’t look like he does. It’s not for everyone, I guess.

it all comes down to taste. i just think his art is really good, and while criticism is good, you shouldn't just follow every single one you receive from someone who just might have a completely different taste. personally i'm really into the brushwork and the illustrative style. obviously its his decision though to keep posting and following critiques.

Okay, you do you. I respect that.
But why are you using the vocabulary of fine art (oil on canvas, landscapes, still lives, portraits)? You could get good work as an illustrator, but you have to illustrate something. Illustration, as far as I can tell, is like a broomstick—it needs to lean against something in order to stand; otherwise, it’d fall to the floor.
Why not collaborate with writers or something?

I understand that. I just want him to realize his talents to their full extent, and I don't think he'll do that by outsourcing his eye. Having one mentor is ideal, but group critiques are pretty useless.

Even the modernist artists you listed can only present their vision on canvas through unique use of line, shape, color and texture. In fact, how those things are employed matters more because their art is non-representational and how you manipulate those things determines if your piece is aesthetically appealing. If you don't care about what makes up art at the most basic levels then I think you're missing the point of making artwork.

yeah, i agree with that.

also, i was half joking about warhol. i don't have anything specific i DISLIKE about his art. i guess i kind of dislike his persona, just like i dislike banksy (though i hate him way more), i just find them kind of pretentious. the art itself is just not for me, but i don't think there's anything wrong with it. i like printing, but i'm someone who needs at least some sort of aesthetic that resonate with me in an artwork and warhol just doesn't have that.

Yeah I dislike Banksy too, but not because of his persona. I just think his work is awfully obvious and heavy-handed. I liked him when I was in middle school and first saw Exit Through the Gift Shop, but I think I've grown out of it. Most of his work, in my eyes, doesn't benefit from prolonged contemplation–you can look at it and "get" it within a few seconds. And once you "get" it, there's no point in looking at it any more.
