How the fuck do I decide what to draw? When i was a kid I came up with vibrant worlds, stories, characters, etc. Then I took art classes as a teen until adulthood and now years later the only things I draw are what I think would be "interesting studies" or just muscle memory doodles. I want to create cool original pieces but I feel like the spark is gone and I'm just a robot. At the same time I feel like I've matured way past what I used to do, but damn was it a lot of fun back then. I just want that fun back.

Pic semi related. I like this style. Thing is looking at art I like takes a couple of seconds. Spending hours planning and painting a detailed and fully rendered piece feels like a painful waste of time when I can't even decide what I want to see drawn. I'm such a boring person.

I understand how you're feeling anon, when I get in a slump with my art I often try and just draw simple shapes and put them together, the key is to not worry about it. Even just drawing stick men or lines will help you to stop focusing on whats wrong or what 'needs' to be done to draw. Just draw, if your not going to show it to anyone why worry, draw because you enjoy it, the will to improve will come after :D

You don’t, you picked the wrong skill if you don’t have any reasons to want it behind “because I can.”

I feel you, especially atm OP.
I some times find that by beginning something small, I end up making it much more than originally intended. I doodle or sketch, and then do something I then want to do more with - and so I do. Maybe I just draw a dude, but think he'd look good as an alien rancher and so give him some weird alien cow and an elaborate futuristic pitch fork or something. Just an idea or something to try help - don't worry about the what, just do and see what comes while you do.

I think it can help to go into making art with the same mentality that an 11-year old on Deviantart does. When you're a kid taking in the world and consuming media, you don't have very many filters. You might draw wonky dragons because you think they'e cool, or make edgy donut steel Sonic ocs because that's what you earnestly like at the time. You don't have any notion that maybe what you're making is embarrassing or lame, and you don't have any fear people are going to insult your work for it.
What I think would help you is to try and return to that more innocent mindset and don't be afraid to take inspiration, or even outright copy other works because you like them. You said you like that Zigzagoo illustration, right? Why don't you try drawing something similar to it. But instead of making a one-to-one copy change some aspects of the illustration, try to copy the elements of it that you enjoy. Is it the colors? The motion? The setting? The character? Maybe you could draw a zigzagoon in some other sort of location, or try drawing a different Pokemon with a similar color palette.

Thanks anon. Re: pretending I'm an 11 year old on deviantart, something about it feels awkward/wrong. But maybe that's just what it takes. This sounds edgy af but I think at some point I taught myself not to feel emotions very strongly, so when I try I just feel really fucking retarded. I can't take it seriously.

i don't really have any advice for you OP but just wanted to stop by and say i'm in the same boat as you haha. 32 years old btw.

When I feel dull and uncreative I go outside somewhere to draw or paint from life, it can be engaging.

not that guy, but I think not taking it seriously is the whole point. Inhibition is the enemy of fun, and your ego is definitely holding you back

"You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club."

Keep sketching and experiment with new shit. That's how it works. If you wait for the Muse, you're fucked.

Think of it as post-irony. I don't really think your problem is creativity so much as fear of cringe. Actually part of the reason I don't recommend /ic/ to people, the board culture feels bitter but more pressingly it's *self conscious*

If you can't think of anything, just do a study.

Animal, plant, anatomy, whatever, you'll never run out of things or ideas to draw

If its concepts i dont know. Go back to That early state. Draw stupid things. If its facial expressions go crazy. Twist your own face, do extreme things. Draw them wrong. Break rules. Switch medium, paint on paper, use ink. Use your finger.
Do random scribbles and make them into art.
There are countless ways to stimulate the brain to create connections and inspiration. You have to start with the paper, don’t think, just draw.
If you find something interesting, then you can think on how to bring it out.
