any other good examples of paintings that dont use blending? i hate blending but i dont want my art to look too flat-colored. i like how you can still make it look painterly in a cartoony kind of way

>> No.3986081

Blending isn't what makes your work look 3d.

Mid century american illustration were often done in gouache which is a medium which naturally doesn't allow for much blending.

i know that
by flat colored i didnt mean flat form. i mean it has the illusion of being painterly while not actually involving any blending
sorry about that

i do like the way gouache looks but that image you posted is still pretty blended for my preference, might not be a good example. thanks though, ive seen some gouache paintings before that have minimal to no blending. im just trying to see more artwork and different styles done this way to get more ideas on how i can make it work

Maybe consider taking a look at some detailed pixel art? I've seen some impressive pixels that look like small paintings but since they're pixels the don't make use of blending tools.

I know pixel art is not the same as painting but sometimes examining them gives me some inspiration or ideas to try when I'm painting.

Look up ukiyo-e. Most ukiyo-e are less painterly than what you posted but they still demonstrate the style well. Traditionally they were printed using a carved woodblock for each color, which doesn't allow for blending other than the occasional gradient background.

Or, look at someone like Andrew Wyeth. A lot of his stuff is egg tempera, which isn't really a blending medium, so he used a lot of cross-hatching technique in his paintings.
I'm old as fuck, and I got my illustration degree at a time when everything was done in goauche. I developed a cross-hatching style for it I still use on occasion now - and works pretty well in digital, too, just set up a fade on your brush, and build up color with paint strokes. If the brush is small enough, it merges in the eye.
This is an apple I did ways back when i was bored, that I never finished, but shows what I'm talking about.

>> No.3986273

>>3986079
So, don't blend. See my Apple post. You can cross hatch with color, you can overlay transparent layers, there are many ways to build up color and texture without blending. Go look at what pointalists did with dots.
If you want depth of color, then create it. Hue, along with value and saturation.

This is gonna go 50-50 with people thinking if it counts or not.
Hajime sorayama doesn't use oils or belndable mediums, he uses oils, a little bit of acrylics, and airbrush. He uses a soft airbrush brush, but he technically never blends anything.

>> No.3988008

>>3987977
He uses several different media at once, washes, layers, and pencils enough that it might not "technically" be blending but the effect is the same.

I think the trick to this style is being very detailed/having a lot of shit going on. It's deceptively simple, but what creates visual interest despite the flat colors is that there are hundreds of different color patches
