I love how he draws the hand in perspective, with decent anatomy for all of them, but for some reason the lines are what will set apart the good artists from the great artists. This is what happens when you let illustrators get money, they start dictating what the right and wrong way to draw is, with no awareness of art history or individual style.

According to this guy Cezanne was a beginner who took too many lines to get his paintings right. If only he could've gotten rid of that damn chicken scratching. It's almost as if all of his art theory revolved around carving out forms with multiple lines and planes.

Those are very deliberate, form-fitting strokes that fit exactly what the tutorial details as "professional".
They aren't clean strokes, but the tutorial never outright says they have to be clean. The pictures used just emphasis clean strokes because surprise fucking surprise, the source material is about comics.

This person in the OP drew chickenscratch but she did what everyone does in these shitty bite-sized tutorials and boiled the concept down to surface level, without highlighting what is exactly wrong about it, ending up with something akin to "thick lines are bad, thin lines are correct". She did this to make the concept digestible in 2 seconds to the broadest possible audience of kids with no patience and attention span, and she got called out by that audience she was seeking. This is entirely her fault.
If you read "Drawn to Life: 20 golden years of Disney masterclasses" where Walt Stanchfield teaches gesture drawing, you will see a ton of really "awful" chickenscratching. And I mean real chickenscratching, messy, much worse than the OP, lines over lines over lines. Disney animators do this all the time to find the right gesture and they don't care. Making short lines is personal preference, I've seen many veterans draw in short strokes, and the messy lines themselves are not what is bad about chickenscratching. Chickenscratching is bad when you

I think a big part of the problem for westerners who want to draw "anime/manga style" is that they forget the ultimate purpose of it: to create anime or manga. That means the drawings traditionally need to be brought to a level of tightness where they'd be reproducible by a press in pure black ink (manga) or drawn in one paint (anime). The Japanese have high expectations for linework ever since woodblocks. This is a practical issue.

Chicken scratch as you call it is a viable method of drawing and you're spreading judgmental misinformation by telling people otherwise. Guess what? Multiple strokes prevent the beginner wobble that plagues DeviantArt if you didn't know. My style is unique unlike all those anime artists who draw bland poses all the time so I firmly believe in the style I chose. Printing hasn't changed. B/W printing is still one ink (black) on paper. Color printing is just 4 inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) or more on paper. They're all based on very tiny dots of ink, creating the illusion of washes and gradients.

You don't have to do everything in crisp black and white, just like you don't have to use fonts. It's just the results would not meet the expectations of most of the audience.

Even outside of a manga context, she's still absolutely right because chicken scratching isn't just a line quality issue, it's a design issue. I've harped on this many times, and it's infuriating that beginners look at texture work and claim "see, small strokes are okay!" Chicken scratch kills sketches and designs. Even impressionist artists often start with a well drawn underpainting that uses long strokes to create good shapes.

None of these beginners are designer-level artists. They don't understand what the job entails.
