We know he's drawn hundreds of references, so that's what he did to get this good. Even in a recent chapter he drew a muscle girl crushing a watermelon monster between her thighs... And it's referenced from a popular video of a girl doing just that.

Copy references but try to use anime aesthetic. See how Murata draws the little details to make it look like manga instead of a copied photograph.

There is at least a couple times on his streams you could have seen him using references when he wasn't sure about the pose. Like that time when King is standing up during S class meetup before assaulting monster base - he used a photo of one of his assistants.

Without ONEs webcomic for layouts, hed be nothing special. You can literally tell when there are new scenes suggested by him because of how lifeless the panelling becomes. Early on he had passion for the project, too. But even then, he rarely ever draws backgrounds. Few backgrounds he does do are usually copy and pasted zipatone or digitally put in. Cities, trees, parks, vending ma hines, clouds, the earth for scenes like parting clouds from punch, etc are not drawn by him. When he draws a background, it is usually smoke, million speedlines, rocks being smashed or simply adding cracks to a copy pasted building for battle dmg. Saitamas room and stuff are also drawn, but literally couple lines for walls with no details.

Ultimately ONE gave him all layouts and thumbnails and he does some finishes on someone elses work. Its not impresseive, especially since he draws cartoony faces that are extremely at odds with the bodies he draws. He basically does house style american comics with manga faces and it really doesnt make sense.

But couple figure drawings, million speedlines and admittedly excellent hatching is all he does. Go actually look at a chapter - bleach guy does more backgrounds than murata and he is made fun of all the time. Real backgrounds. Most weebs cant even tell difference between blatant zipatone or clip paint cut and paste backgrounds, cars, bikes, temples, etc. Shit like gantz is almost all fake/not drawn. Even his characters are all 3d models he traced over. Goblin slayer is all traced models and no real backgrounds.

The products can be good or enjoyable and you can spout tools not rules or other nonsense, but dont confuse it with actual skill or artistic merit. Read webcomic sidebyside with muratas and look how much better the storytelling is in webcomic. The art is inferior, but gesture, composition and panelling is defintion of soul vs soulless.

Murata, as confirmed by his 2017 interview with Kotaku said "[laughs], I just draw, I really don't know".

He went on to say that, along with buying the right pencil, he would go around the internet and save images of art he really likes and occasionally watching tutorial or a speed paint. "I like to ask other users how they think artists create the art they make" he said. "Its fascinating to hear the inputs of other users while I sit in my room thinking of creating beautiful art."

When asked about how often he draws Murata replied "Good thing I have a spark of Talent [Laughter], but perhaps I should spend more time drawing rather than talking to other users on the internet."

Some artists display how they've improved over the years. I can think of Noah Bradley, who made an article about it.
I'm just another anon so feel free not to take my word for it but the true method to improve is to draw whatever you want to draw, whatever you'll invest yourself into-be it comics, painting, pinups, whatever, but with a good dose of studies on the side that you'll complete in the optic of completing whatever finished piece you want to draw. For example, imagine you wanna draw a lady facing away with a background of flowers? Then before you get into the drawing, you do studies of feminine backs, arms and necks + flowers studies + color/values studies. The idea is to give purpose to your studies and to put them into action immediately after you complete them. Too often we see anons who do random studies of whatever that serve no purpose whatsoever, that's just useless.
Another thing is to fill sketchbooks with what you're not comfortable with whenever you have free time. Fill them with hands, heads etc., things you're less comforable with whenever you have free time, it adds up quickly.

I think it's a mixture of not being good at explaining what you did, being too lazy to explain your whole fucking career to someone, or deliberately not revealing your routines to cull the competition

It's simplification, a lot of things we do in art, thumbnails, side views, gesture, construction, line work, rendering/color, are simplifications, it makes achieving the end goal easier rather than trying to do everything all at once and failing. Hampton/vilpuu/loomis/huston ect.. teach you to get basic volumes/proportions of anatomy on page and then make it more complex, this will help you draw it from imagination because it's easier to remember. From there you can apply the same method to drawing anything, by converting it into simple volumes and then making it more complex.
