IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous thread: >>3978104

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

I was just wondering: what is your process when drawing? Do you go with gesture->form->anatomy or do you use construction etc.?

I like to just start with a random part of the head (ear, eyes, nose, mouth) and then build anatomy around it. It works fine imo and it saves a lot of time.

Pic related how I study anatomy.
Do you think it's a decent method or is gesture really that important? Does it look stiff?

(In pic related, I study the form and gesture AFTER doing the anatomy. For some reason, i've never really been able to start from gesture...)

Gesture is not foundational drawing. Too many of you don't understand the point of gesture, it's a way for an artist to SEE gesture, so they can incorporate it into the work, not start a drawing from. Gesture is an exercise for your brain.

You're overthinking it. Draw in whatever way your hand is comfortable, and you can get the shapes you want. People are not sitting in classrooms with teachers going "NO, YOU CAN'T DRAW WITH YOUR HAND LIKE THAT!"
Drawing from the hand, or the elbow, or the shoulder, or how you hold a pencil, it's all personal choice and what works best FOR YOU. Anyone who tells you differently here is just an autist who can't handle people doing things they don't.

It's all about the gesture. You need to look at some references of people going down stairs to see how the pose actually looks. Your pose looks strewn together and not natural. The perspective is all wrong and there are major proportion issues. How is a man that tall supposed to hold on to the rail when they're going down for example? you dont really want to draw a long line and draw a bunch of heads and draw your figure top to bottom and leave it at that. start with your overall torso shape, divide it into thirds and theres your base head size.
head system isnt that useful outside of drawing one proportional figure, if you were doing a comic scene you wouldnt start it off by drawing all the heads of length.

Okay >>3982852 here I am back here is what I can notice

The ref you posted has different spacing for the parts of the face. Notably the eyes are smaller than your s and they keep the "enough space for a 3rd eye between the eyes" rule. It has more space between the nose and the eyes and the same amount of space for the mouth.

About yours, the first thing I immediately noticed is that your faces a bit rigid and samey for both the annoyed and the happy one. Keep in mind that the face has 43 (!) different muscles and it is capable of an astonishing amount of subtle and radical changes to its shape. The key for making it stylized is to know how and what part of the face changes with emotion. Luckly our brain has evolved to be able to easily notice and even the subtlest of changes which makes us capable to decode it even on simple drawings

You do not seem use the eyebrows enough, the eyebrows have key role in showing expression and since we are stylizing them we are free to exaggerate and move the eyebrows in radical ways that help exaggerate the expression. We can move them up and down pull them in and even move them independently. The ref has them raised up high to show interest and curiosity. But if you are annoyed the brows come don and pull together. Do not be afraid to move them around.

Then edge of the lips, while very subtle on kawaiiuguu faces are also a crucial part of conveying emotion. The lips are ultra flexible and capable of a great deal of shape changing, stretching and pushing towards every direction. Use it to curve it up and down, make it thicker, make it asymmetric.

Eyes too even without the brows can convey emotions, just by being pulled together and thin to bulging out, or just lazily hanging half open.

Cheek muscles pay a vital role at this, they pull up at the edges when we smile, they pull up in the center when we sneer, all these subtle changes can be used to gently deform the big animu eyes.

Questions?

Just posting something in the making. I had to do a ton of corrections because it looked too western to me at first, maybe it's the clean lineart that reminds me of cartoons like Teen Titans, but whatever. Drawing is what matters right now.

If you're making drawing that capture the gesture in a way that a viewer can tell what it is, yes.

And, moving on from that, being able to see gesture and adding it to future compositions. Gesture is movement. Say you get a commission to draw someone playing tennis. You'd play with the pose with quick gestural drawings to get a feel for the overall shape, pose, and composition, and when you find what feels right, you move on to the first studies and roughs. Or, you can look critically at future work, and try to see if what you did captured the gesture you intended.
That's why gesture is just quick lines. It's not a finished drawing. It's learning to SEE the gesture in a pose, and then transferring that through your brain onto paper. it's an exercise for your brain. It's getting so familiar with it, it becomes instinctual for you.

Wow thanks. I'm about to fall asleep, but I checked back just in time.

I see what you mean, I'm definitely not using eyebrows like I should, and I can stand to bend the eyes a bit more.

I guess now that I'm getting the hang of putting a piece together, I naturally incline towards safe expressions instead of playing with my design to get more feeling from it.

I won't read this till tomorrow, but is there something I can use to practice this particular issue (facial expressions)?

For starters, read these anons they talk about that >>3982961
>>3982968
>>3982977
Then I'd add that it's about understanding how the face works, since you already know enough expressions from real life and watching anime, probably. The issue is knowing the anatomy of the face and how the eyebrow mouth and eyes react... I didn't particularly study it but whenever I drew something with a face and posted it here, the good anons gave me tips.
For example when a character smiles strongly, the corners of their eyes get some marks. Also happens with the corners of the mouth, depending on age they'll mark strongly or not at all (cute anime girls almost never have corners in their mouths when smiling but it's more common on rugged men). You learn by drawing and getting corrected and studying the face....

But I just found out a good book on the mega which shows a lot of drawings about expressions. Look at them and learn something useful, maybe. It's the mega from the sticky I believe. The book is "Draw in digital tools! How to draw the overflow facial expressions emotions of the characters"

The $500 pricepoint makes it seem like a scam, that's super overpriced. Maybe Bradley is extremely thorough and he is very good at painting landscapes but I don't think he'll teach you many "secrets" you can't learn anywhere else for less money. The fundamentals that make up good landscape painting aren't exactly that complicated.

I'd say save your money and take Nathan Fowkes' Schoolism courses on environment design, composition, color and light first and you should have a great idea of everything you should be doing. Fowkes also specializes in landscapes/environments but has far more work and teaching experience than Bradley.

Yes like that. Although if you're using the standard round brush you'll need to play with your tablet pressure settings, or the brush settings, to avoid having them end in teardrops rather than sharp points (also general lineweight practice). I use a flat brush with pressure sensitivity for my own stuff, but it has its ups and downs. Im going to sleep now, but I'd encourage you look into tutorials on mastering digital lineweight.
