IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous thread: >>3967812

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started.

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

to anyone wanting better feedback, post your work with a little write up on what it is you were trying to achieve with the drawing, be specific, if you really want to get better you should have a specific thing your trying to improve each time, a shitty drawing can still be a super successful study/progress piece. With each new drawing build upon the groundwork of previous successful pieces.
Break your work down and tackle it in chunks (dont draw full pieces / render etc if just working on getting better at head construction), just dropping a mess and expect a decent crit is ridiculous, its far easier to give a good crit if everyone knows your clear intentions.

pretty much what he said, the shapes aren't too bad in all honesty and they would look cleaner if you did it in smooth strokes, the wigglyness in your lines makes it look weird.
just do big confident strokes (that go outside the form if your worried about accuracy and erase away the excess), do it lightly, quickly and confidently.

Also try not to space out all the lines evenly, I believe it was the peter han course that said to vary the amount of lines and distance between them, you only really want to use the bare minimum to convey the change in form.

don't draw the silhouette, you have to actually draw the structure, if you don't what is the point... you are just doing symbol drawing.
You can seeing in the fact that you are trying the replicate her pose but not how the parts are has to be, like in the legs, where you did not draw the structure of the heels when it's obvious that it is relevant because they elevate the feet, if you do not draw them anyone can affirm that you simply draw bad feets. Also in the way you draw the hands and arms, or that you just draw a circle to say that the knees are there.
If you want to use a reference for learn to "draw the body", use an nude person, not with clothes, if you want to use the reference for the pose only, then you should not be asking because you already know how to draw the body.
In those kind of photos the only thing that you can learn is the pose, wich is really simply anyway, so no, you can learn the hands pose, wich also are easy so no, you can learn how to draw the heels and the dress, but you are not doing that. So just draw from nude photos instead and not waste time.
Is more easy see anatomy books for the individual parts, like the hands, feets, abdomen, head.

Head is slightly too big. You don't represent the forms in 3 dimensions, is just an outline. You haven't drawn any major landmarks. So as a basis for a drawing it's not that good.

Use naked references. They're naked for a reason and it's not to make you hard.

To put it bluntly: your shading is bad. There’s no sense of where the light source is coming from. You used flat shading on the hair, a weird gradient shading technique on the shirt, and cell shading on everything else. The “highlights” in the hair look lazy. Look at actual hair and fabric and see how light reflects off of it. And also learn how to shade according to a light source.

hand looks weird. there’s too much dependency on lines instead of using values. speaking of values, they’re non existent here besides the lazy shading on the arm. Learn how to shade deliberately and use darker and lighter values as well as midtones, instead of just relying on white.

Hey, fellow boxfag.
I've only been doing it for about a week now so don't take me as a great source, but I've been finding improvement from hyper focusing on how my joints are moving/not moving.
Before making a line or ghost a line I make sure the joints I don't want moving are firmly locked and then try and memorize the way my joint is moving when I feel like my ghosting has me on target.
Once your pen is down you just have to go, follow through with the movement you've memorized and if you miss you miss.
Right now I'm really struggling to learn how to memorize how to stop on point, as most of my lines are going past or not quite making it to target.

The light direction and unclear the form is lost because of that. I can see you are a bit confused on what to do.

Here is an idea for a process on how to approach it I just made these process pictures up in like 20 minutes but maybe it will be helpful to demonstrate the thought process

Make a map about the surface area of the character like the head is obviously a ball the arms are obviously cylinders the hair is something in between even if it is not a solid object. Kind of like on 1)

Pick a single main light source and try to find which part will be illuminated and which part will be shaded I tried to show this on 2) and 3) to demonstrate. On 3) I turned off the base picture to show how it looks like without it maybe t will help. You do not have to be 100% accurate about it but at least find the main places, you can cheat a bit with the face and stuff we are not doing 100% photo realism after all.

On 4) add some lighter spots toward the light source and the darker spots that are towards the shadow area

On 5) I again turned off the base picture to show what I overpainted.

Did this help? Questions?

Does speed come with time, or is it something you deliberately have to practice?

Short answer is that drawing upside down will cause your brain to recognize the lines that make up the face and body instead of just processing the face and body itself. You should go over to the artbook thread and download "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and give it a read in your free time.

Understanding how to draw form in 3D and in perspective is only half drawing from imagination if you want to be really good at it. Knowing WHAT you're drawing comes from your memory and knowledge of how things really look...Observing things and studying them via drawing is the foundation that imaginative drawing is built upon.

Case in point, the people are incredibly good at drawing from imagination also have incredibly good observational drawing skills, artists like James Gurney or Karl Kopinski.

Understanding how to draw form in 3D and in perspective is only half of what drawing from imagination takes if you want to be really good at it. Knowing WHAT you're drawing comes from your memory and knowledge of how things really look...Observing things and studying them via drawing is the foundation that imaginative drawing is built upon because it builds that visual library to pull from when you do sit down and draw completely from memory and imagination.

The rest is just practice. But becoming proficient at drawing what you see comes first. For example, can you realistically expect yourself to draw a great looking character from imagination if you can't really draw something similar very well from what you see?

Case in point, the people who are incredibly good at drawing from imagination also have incredibly good observational drawing skills, artists like James Gurney, Karl Kopinski, Alex Ross, etc. But having good observational drawing skills alone doesn't mean you'll be good at drawing from imagination if you never practice it, ie Proko.

She is lifting her left heel up from the ground that knee is bent while the other one is straight because it has to support the body's weight. This hint of movement is somehow missing from your piece, the right leg doesn't seem to be straight and the food that is being lifted up doesn't really convey the stepping movement either, granted it is not an easy posture.

because even if loomis methods and exercises can be incomprehensible to some when followed to the letter, he has a lot of good ways of thinking that he repeats over and over. he also makes the reader realize how important little shit is that seemed trivial at first, like the way you grip a pencil or thinking of the pencil as an extension of yourself.
And after all of that, if even that still goes over your head or you wish to ignore it, even mindlessly copying loomis heads or sketches teaches you. it is still able to teach you because you aren't losing much more than copying a photograph. his work is of that high a caliber.

Thanks man, I did 2 more heads after that but hand started to hurt so went to bed, I have a few different head constructions in mind and they tend to become a mixed bag when I do a new head, I'm going to keep doing them but now I've started on the features so I'll just practice while placing them and then reread the constructions again afterwards to polish.

I'm currently using the book specifically on head/face from the hitokaku guy, I did loomis a little before but I felt like there was something missing so I'm gonna revist him afterwards.
I definitely feel like i can draw things better just using a pencil for now, I don't have to fight with the thoughts of is it just me being shit or is it the hardware/software (it is just me, but now I don't have to think about it).

It feels like you copied elements that you enjoy seeing from other artists without an understanding of why or how they implement them. Case in point the hips and legs. They’re as thick as they are long, which is good in theory but you gotta learn how to properly construct legs first (her kneecaps are uneven despite standing up straight). Same with breasts and upper chest, as currently her midriff has nothing to connect to behind the breasts.

While you do this do drawabox to work on your linecontrol. Do the excercises up until 250box and then repeat them.
Then move on to Hampton's contruction book to get a better idea of construction and proportions.
While doing this look up videos by Sinix and other youtubers on how to get facial features to look like proper features and not just symbols of those features.

Contrapposto is nothing special or magical really, it is an old Italian word used for a body posture that "holding the body weight on one leg" which is a popular human posture for sculptures and painting because of its dynamism. It usually has the shoulders and hips bent to the opposite direction too. I advise you look it up there are plenty of examples for it in art and there is a lot material about it.

For example the model on the photo at >>3979302 is also doing it.

1: I was warming up and this head came about so I tried to think about the planes from memory
2: I retraced my sketch with adjustments to see if it looks alright
3: didnt like the planes i drew around the nose and nose in general so tried to think about it
4: readjusted the nose based on new info from 3

It looks a little strange but its all made up on the fly to get something workable so I'm not sure if somethings greatly off or its just shoddily thrown together bits, Could be the neck stuff too as i just threw it on to try get rid of the disembodied floating head feel.

Any ideas lads or am I doing alright, fresh pair of eyes someone elses take on it would be great.

Now that I've come away from it for a bit I really should have drawn in the far nostril and drew the nose as a whole, I tried to jump the gun and simplify on the fly now its just like hes got a huge snozz and weird angle or so

Okay, so this is what I have so far.

Can someone help me make it look not so... weird? Lol I definitely need to go through the basics. I just want to do a gift for an artist friend.

The paper one the right is my first try. One on top is an outline of the base image I want to use as reference. The paper on the bottom left is my most recent attempt. I'm trying to have the character reading a book.

Any help would be super appreciated.

This was the reference I was using. Hoping to have the same hip/leg placement. The character is flat chested though.

Someone wheel out that list of current industry professionals that started ages at 23-30 or so.

If you start now you're still starting younger than people who made it to the top of the industry. That is, if you're really starting for real now and not just moping around. No guarantee on making it that far though, but still give it a shot if you really have an interest or want to take this sort of thing seriously.

You are obviously a complete beginner right Anon? There is a lot to be improved on your picture but it is too long to start list them one by one because you will need some more understanding of form in general. Instead I would suggest you read the sticky and practice drawing the human form.

Grinding out hamptons head construction.

Just quick sketches to see where I fuck up.

I need to pay more attentions to the placements of my segments and I have a habbit of making features far too small. Also round thick heads.

Can anyone help me see other flaws. Have you guys had the same problems? Are you still having them? How did you go with improving?

Something in the pose looks off and I can't quite put my finger on it despite flipping the canvas. It will look better once I had line weight and colour but I'd like to get some opinions on the pose while I can still change it.

I went to fool around drawfagging funny things but I think I unironically loved it and improved my craft wtf I recommend doing the same. Draw what you like on /a/ as if you didn't care, I had 0 stress doing this since it wasn't "a real drawing" but it looks maybe better than my real pieces. It's like drawing without a burden upon you, since it's supposed to make people laugh.

Bottom center and the one slightly left from it have botched perspective. Try drawing cubes as bases for the heads. Practice cubes in various perspectives.

Can I get a critique? It's an OC of mine, didn't draw the toes cause otherwise I would have spent the next 2 hours figuring it out, feet are my arch nemesis.

Mostly wondering if the gesture is alright, and everything is where it should be. I didn't use a reference, and if I self-crit, I think my abs and legs still got some ways to go.
