when you realized that soul matters more than skill?

Bad question, pretty much everyone already knows that appeal matters more than anything.

You just need to have a bit of humor if you just wanna make gag comics, no one reads those to appreciate the art. So if you were studying Loomis and Scott Robertson just to draw chubby stick figures, you wasted your time. But if you actually want to tell a story than the art needs to be somewhat competent. Berserk wouldn't work if it was drawn by this guy.

"Soul vs. Skill"

Both matter equally.

Without soul there's nothing to communicate/express in your art.
Without skill you can't communicate with your art.

Create art with only soul and nobody gets it.
Create art with only skill and it is meaningless.

Assuming you are able to put paint to canvas and we end up with an actual painting to be observed, it will communicate a message no matter what. There is no such thing as meaningless art, the painting itself is the message and the messenger.

Yet the message transmitted, it can go from something striking at first sight, transmitting grandiose ideas & reaching divinity (the fine art you see in the Louvre) or the lowest trash (just wank) / overly pretentious garbage (empty canvas with a white dot, symbol of the "individuality experienced by an artist during the creative process")...

Can't see why not. Are you passionate about anything?
The main hurdle I can think of is the possibility that you're not introspective and can't convey what you do feel

You're talking nonsense. I hope you realize that your personal metrics and tastes mean absolutely fuck all to everyone except yourself. Creating work is the only thing the artist needs to do, full stop. The work will speak for itself, what you take from it is your choice.

>muh modern art money laundering schemes

I'm not sure about autism, but as a sociopath, yes. I have a personality disorder with lots of similarities, complete lack of guilt, constantly being told I have zero empathy and instinctively resorting to manipulation and lying whenever beneficial, backstabbing friends only to shake things up. I'm too old to exaggerate or lie about it, so it is as it sounds. I have obviously never thought of combating it, but the awareness of me being "different" and unwanted, being called a monster gave me some very heavy existential thoughts. Now I'm mostly in peace with myself and don't consider myself an outcast, just focusing on my long-term plans (being able to freelance and becoming a forensic) enjoying lack of guilt and stress but it has definitely shaped me. If anything, this is the reason my art has "soul", even though I can't feel anything other than being relaxed, misery or desperation, I have developed a strong feeling of consciousness and try to convey it, even though most of my art is far from being dark, depressing or violent. "Soul", awareness, ability to convey is completely separate from the ability to feel.

I wish that my work gets 1/10th as popular as Charles Shultz. He had skill, despite a lack of Loomis and all those Fine Art qualities folk obsess over in these boards.

But somehow,he impaled me in the Feels over and over.

When dealing with an 'expression of creativity', it is helpful to keep two things in mind:

- We are dealing with three distinct elements: the creator, the 'expression of creativity' itself, and the viewer.
(I'm using the term 'expression of creativity' to cover every possible creative endeavour, be it painting, sculpture, writing, music, dance, film, architecture, decoration, etc, etc.)

- The 'intent' that caused the expression of creativity.
('Intent' is the primary cause of motivation for this expression to be created.)

There is indeed no meaningless art, inasmuch that the viewer provides the actual meaning. Even if we take for example a landscape (where 'nature' is the creator), or random splotches of paint on a sidewalk because somebody was carrying leaking cans of paint, and there is no clearly identifiable 'intent', the viewer can still find meaning, but that meaning is fully supplied by them.

What do you LIKE to draw, then?

There is a market for EVERYTHING.

Walk by a display of greeting cards and you will realize that. Goofy cartoons, abstract designs, surreal imagery of all kinds. Try your hand at making mock cards. It will be both a learning experience and the better ones will start a portfolio for you.
