I think it's a sad cultural loss that the classic American tradition of pickaninny artwork has been intentionally covered up and erased due to accusations of racism. The pickaninny child was an entire archetype in early American cartoons, depicted to be curious, adventurous, and strong. I first saw pickaninny art at Sambo's restaurant in Santa Barbara, and I thought it was beautiful and fascinating.

Not gonna pretend like I'm an expert on these but from what I know most of these were pretty bad. The art's trash too.
The difference between art&culture and a trend is if there was something of real value to keep. could you seriously dig up stories from this that would artistically or literarily knock me off my feet?
I doubt that.
Either way, I don't think there's nothing wrong with caricatures of a black person in any way, nobody's above being laughed at but I don't see anything special in this specifically.

anon i've literally never seen a black person who looked like that. get off this site for a while.
although if you like them, search for 'golliwog' which is the UK version, some nice doll designs. a lot of people including some black people collect them.

Don't deny it nigger lover

I'm not denying that pickaninny art is racist. In fact, I think it absolutely is. And I certainly don't take the position that real black people look like that. My point is that, notwithstanding, the art has value in its aesthetics and as an early American mainstream cultural artifact. The whole "mammie" cookie jar thing and universe of these pitch-dark characters is fascinating.

I wish we'll keep all those KILL WHITE PWOPLW and BLACK LIVES MATTER cultural artifacts in museums, they're after all part of history, and I don't support them, but they have an aesthetic value

Because it was racist.

I prefer talking about Herriman's art instead.

That's a stupid comparison. I'm talking about mass-marketed cultural icons, not shitty protest posterboards and t-shirts

That's a convenient difference, you sly dog. Art does not discriminate.
>shitty
At least you showed your card, you just want racist icons back, shitter. At least other racist assholes don't hide themselves in muh aesthetics.

I'm not trying to hide my racism. I'm racist, there. Lock me up chief

4:30 more interesting to me is this style of using carvings outside of stores

Early American lamps would also have a carved character of some kind underneath.
