For those that uses screen-less tablets, are you satisfied with it?

huion wh1409, its big but i love it, gives good precision without having to zoom in a lot and 12 keys to customise if you are into that. I'd recommend it to anyone. Before this i had a bamboo tablet which was good but i dont think i would ever be able to go back to a small one. It's a bit wierd to get used to it in the first day but gives much freedom and pushes you draw with the whole arm rather than just move your hand on a small surface.

Got an Ipad pro, cintiq 13hd, Intuos Pro Small & Medium.
Honestly, it doesnt really matter, I used to think I need a very specific setup to draw good, but now I think I just need to get my shit together and draw, everything is different, but all viable.
Currently using the Intuos Pro Med the most just because I like seeing things on my big 27 inches IPS. I do carry the iPad everywhere else but I sketch on smol notebooks instead.

I use a wacom intuos 4 medium too! It's a shame Wacom decided to not implement the the small oled panels next to the hotkeys on their newer revisions afterwards. Not a big deal once you get used to the key placements but still a nice feature to have.

Have some of you have migrated from a bamboo to some new wacom model or from another brand? I have a Bamboo CTH-470, it is the Bamboo Pen & Touch Tablet, it works well but I have it for 7 years or more, has 1024 levels of pressure. I was thinking if its worth to update, now all the models of all companies have more levels than that for example, and a larger work space for the same price.

I have a Wacom bamboo small. It functions perfectly, and I'm very used to using it, but it is pretty fucking small. I'm interested in upgrading, maybe to the new 16in cintiq or something, for something nice at home. If it's worth it. I would still use the small one for portability.

Isn't it kinda pointless to post replies without samples of your work? I use an Inspiroy Q11K, it's pretty nice but the pen's recharge is wonky for me. It's slighlty better that inuos 3/4 that I used before and is certaingly MUCH better than cheaper huion tablets. My linework is pretty consistent with it, but I gotta switch the pressure curve for different brushes every now and then.
Now, for the question: I really want a mobile sketchpad of some sort to do plenair studies, I need great color accuracy and a bright screen for daytime painting, pen accuracy is not as important. Any recs?

Wacom Bamboo Screenless

Those with screens, XP-pen 12 and 9.7 inch Ipad

Ipad is cool once you get a screen protector. Apple pen ain't too bad I got everything on sale. Not sure procreate or csp are worth it as sketchbook is doing wonders for me right now

XP-pen 12 with CSP and krita, it's okay, I should have spent more money on a bigger screen. Gets hot after an hour but it's nothing I can't sit on my lap. Need to get a better desk to properly use these. Posture is so important.

Wacom Bamboo was okay, I hated the small surface area compared to the huge size of my screen, could never find a comfortable setup for it since it has to be flat. It's better for avoiding neck and wrist pain for sure but I need to look down at something to draw. Comes with great stylus and programs despite being pretty cheap when I got it like 80 bucks for it all.

I have collected a lot of tablets over the past few years since I graduated and found a job.
I've got a 12 inch iPad pro, Surface Pro 6, Wacom Cintiq 16, Cintiq 22hd, a Samsung Tablet with S Pen, and the Gaomon screened drawing tablet.

Despite having all of that I stick with an Intuos Pro Medium and i'm OK with it.

For years I stuck with an Intuos 4 Medium (pic related) and a shitty bulky Asus laptop. I grinded on that thing day-in-day-out.
Then I graduated and got a good paying IT job. I told myself I was going to upgrade my PC and get a big ass cintiq after I sell my Intuos 4 and retire my laptop.

Not a day has passed where I don't regret that. I really miss my old setup. It's what I was used to, it was what worked best for me, it was where I did some of my best work that I think back fondly on.
I really regret it, and cannot for the life of me get used to drawing on a screen no matter how long I force myself to do it. So i'm just trying to cope with this newer Intuos despite them being not as good imo.

I feel you. I got myself Intuos 5 medium in 2013, along with a license for Manga Studio 5 - I do my stuff with those two even though I promised myself I would switch to a drawing screen when my income got better and the price of available drawing screens has gone down gradually.

It's very comfortable to just plug the USB in the front panel of my computer, and then grab and lay the tablet on my desk. As opposed to whatever power ups and plugs you need with the pen screen. It's a simple procedure and I feel it is effective and part of my workflow.

I am going to upgrade my main monitor to support my digital art ambitions later this year.

I have an intuos4 and a Huion 191v2. The intuos is great and has lasted years. I couldn't get over the disconnected feeling though. That went away with the display tablet and I felt like my lines and general drawing ease has improved since. Being able to see my hand during drawing made a big difference.
I wouldn't recommend Huion though. The screen feels great to draw on but the display panel is not so good. Not nearly bright enough to get a neutral white. Screen is slightly blurry due to the gritty surface. Colors are contrast appear washed out as well.

24HD Cintiq. Best purchase I ever made, and I paid full list at $2500. It's massive, and heavy, but it's a game changer - use it almost daily, since 2014. I used a variety of smaller wacoms before I got it, and they're fine. If I were broke I'd rather have a cheap Chinese knock off than none at all.

I'll probably get an iPad Pro eventually, but I don't really need a mobile digital option, and a pad and pencil works fine away from work or my home studio.

>Do you use screen-less tablet, ipad or drawing monitor?
Screenless. Just a 3x4 inch little thing. It was an Intuos beforehand, but I lost the pen and my temporary tablet turned into my "fuck it, this is good enough."
>For those that uses screen-less tablets, are you satisfied with it?
There's a hard cap on how useful a larger screenless is, because the major flaw of screenless is that making nice, longer clean lines is a crap shoot of guesswork. Like a mouse, you course correct as you head in the vague direction, compared to the a to b, straight or curved precise as fuck traditional lines you can make. I like my freehand draftsmanship.

But at the same time I don't want to invest in a screen tablet without at least using one first. Worried it'll have split-second lag that'll make it intensely unsatisfying to draw on. Least with a screenless you can tape paper over it and get a nice texture to draw one. And just use the ruler tools or spam undo to get nice longer linework or paint strokes. Detailing and sketching is easy as fuck either way.

Pros and cons:
Tablet PC
+ All in one
+ Portability
+/- Glass screen for everything not Wacom
- if it breaks, press F to pay respects
- small working area
- one screen for everything / scratches / etc
- locked to specs

Separate tablet
+ Freedom in terms of PC specs
+ Can buy either a drawing tablet or one with a screen
+ If you buy one with a screen, you effectively gain an extra monitor
- need another PC that isn't a toaster
- limited portability
- for screen tablets not Wacom, screen calibration is a bitch
- extra desk space

If your friend travels alot, an all-in-one doesn't sound too bad as an option. I'd only recommend the Surface or the MobileStudioPro though. Anything less than 13" would be cramped.

Looks like the thread I was looking for. I need a new tablet, after my Huion H640P kicked the bucket for unknown reasons. Apparently that particular model has quality issues. Now, I'm between a Huion H1060P or a XP PEN Deco 03 (based on https://digitalarttabletguides.wordpress.com/ reviews I'm leaning more towards the Huion one, but I'd love /ic/'s input/experience). I'd preorder the XP PEN Pro but their online shop won't ship to my country, our Amazon doesn't list the thing and Amazon USA won't ship this particular product to my location. Sent XP PEN an email, hopefully I'll be able to purchase at a reasonable price. What do? Right now I'm using the cintiq 16. Drawing directly on screen is fucking great. It's way too difficult to do fast precise curves with a screenless tablet. Screenless tablets may be enough for painting (hand not covering the screen) but that's about it.

What the hell is the difference between a Huion and XP-Pen in terms of drawing screen tablets?
Say if I were to choose between a Huion Kamvas GT-221 Pro or the XP Pen Artist22E Pro, what is really the difference other than price? The Huion is more expensive at $599 and the XP Pen is $399. Both seem about the same, like, they're literally coming from the same shady factory, but just branded with different names. Is it very much a situation of "you get what you pay for" and that you really REALLY get quality for the price increase to buy a Cintiq 22HD (which I had my eyes on) or does it even really matter?

and yes, your input will come out warped on the screen so you'll have to make up for that. if you traced a coin on your tablet it would come out as an oval if the aspect ratio isnt the same

Surface Pro 2017 owner here.
Since CSP wasn't built from the ground up for it, it has a lot of input issues from time to time. Cursor freeze, sometimes my strokes would show up off to the side of the screen, only has 8 GBs of Ram so lag and input inaccuracy gets noticeable once your canvas is big enough or you have multiple pages open. Battery pen has weight and gets uncomfortable to use after a while. Saving up for a custom PC and 20in+ screen tablet, 11 in active screen doesn't really give me the space to stretch my arms out.

Portability is a huge plus however, drawing at the mall or library is great. And you can make finished work with this thing, being able to work outside my house was always why I got a Surface before a PC.

Oh, I forgot that, sorry.
This can be corrected depending on the application you use but I found most of them have line jitter. Obviously you can use stabalization and most of the programs I used supported it: Krita (terrible on windows but nice on linux), Clip Studio and Photoshop.
It's most noticable in things like Sketchbook Pro when you don't have the option to apply to each it stroke.

There's also the fact that in general, the two types of pens, N-Trig (Surface) and Wacom AES pens felt difficult to use, like they would glide. On the iPad while it did feel like there was no drag, it didn't seem to be an issue since iOS is a mobile platform.
Windows as an input device with a stylus on screen is very hit or miss.

On the bright side, I did try a Samsung Galaxybook 10.6 and it was nice, same Wacom EMR tech as my tablets but overall it was weak in specs and the updated model only came with 4GB of RAM. If the original goes down to about 800 for the 8GB model, I'd definitely buy it in an instance.

I have the 16" i7 version. Just got it, but it works exactly how I wanted it to so far. It's a portable workstation more than anything, so as long as you plan to mostly use it on a desktop for long periods, it's really great. Runs photoshop and CSP very smoothly, only lags when using big brushes at huge resolutions, but it handles simple brushes on my 1GB comic PSD files nicely. It does get pretty hot, but it's not uncomfortably hot, so I use it in my lap all the time no problem. The screen is also very nice and just blows the iPad out of the water no contest. The newest Pro Pen and display feels so natural, and using the felt tips makes it feel like I'm drawing with a micron on paper. I have to use it more before I decide if I love it, but I'm finding it useful so far since I don't have to drag a cintiq+laptop plus wires around anymore to work outside my desk. The main drawbacks is windows 10, and that comes with the occasional glitch that requires a restart to bring it back to normal. Wacom updates also suck and it's annoying to ignore them. It's also very large for a tablet, but I bought it for that reason + maxed out specs. All in all, I look forward to creating on it and seeing how much I can do with it.

I’ve been wanting to make the switch to digital for a long time but I borrowed my brothers tablet for a few days and I hated the disconnect of having my hands and pen on the tablet instead of the screen where the image is being drawn.

My gf recently got an apple pen 2 for her iPad Pro and she wanted me to try Procreate and I fucking love it, the convenience of digital drawing without having to get used to drawing on a tablet but looking at the screen.

One day everything is functioning normally then an update comes out and suddenly every time I try to make a line in Photoshop it pans instead. There are always workarounds, but honestly I just stopped updating the drivers. Other than that it's a solid tablet, literally. No bending or flexing, it's completely solid. Initially I did have an issue with the nibs wearing out, but I changed the surface out for the "smooth" option and haven't had to change a nib since. That being said, if you find yourself wanting to transition to digital I would echo many of the anons sentiments itt and recommend you pick up a budget Huion for $50. Pen and paper is cheaper but I just jumped into buying an iPad right away and it was reasonably worth it but I will warn you now, do not get caught up in the "I need to play with ten different settings for six hours to get it right". You're still learning to draw so just get the hard airbrush and set it to a small size, like 5 pixels and go nuts.
Also if you're (you should be) doing construction lines, add in a second layer, set the opacity of it to like 40% and make the construction lines on that so they're less visible and then on the other layer, draw in the lines properly. Undo function is great to use, when you get past the fundementals. Don't be the beginner who constantly undos things because it's not "perfect". It's not supposed to be, you're supposed to be practicing and make mistakes so you can tell what needs improving

But whoopsie all of thir patents expired now and now a company with lower expectations and smaller buckets of cocaine realeased this for 60$.

Such a deal for 60$ and the pen lasts for a month on a short charge.

But they stepped it up a ton.
No batteries and tilt support on all devices from 60$ "cheap" tablets that rival Intous pro M to 170$ behemoths that dwarf Intuos pro Large.
Right now they have it all.

I guess they lack the balls to overstep 1000$ price range with their displays but i would fucking love to pay 1500$ for a 27" 4k panel with 100% AdoveRGB

I think this is the right thread.

Hi, my birthday is soon and I'm thinking of getting either 1 of these:
Wacom Cintiq 16 (~$600) or a Huion GT-220 (~$400). My issue is that I can't seem to pick what size I want for a screen. 15.6 is the Wacom which I think MIGHT be good? But might be too small for me. But I also feel like the Huion screen (21.5 inch) would be nice but too big for me. I'm honestly torn and I can't pick one. There's also the issue where Huion might be dodgy.

For reference I work on pic related with a 24inch monitor was my screen. Issue is that this thing is too small and I've had for ~5 years.

>> No.3969365

>>3969339
Afaik cintiq 16 isn't really worth the price.
No tilt and even the colors aren't good.
Wacom just suck giant balls at budget segment.

Take a look at Kamvas Pro 20.
>No battery
>Tilt support
>Decent panel
>Same 600$ as wacom 16

I think it's the best option unles you'd spend 800 on Kamvas pro 22.

There also is Xp-Pen artist 16 pro with tilt support and it's great except the stand is shit. The 22" model doesn't have the tilt yet.

Is Kamvas Pro 20 good? I've never used Huion, only wacom so I don't know. Just don't want to gamble on something that might break. But if it does break I'll probably have a warranty.

Like >>3969192 said, xppen tablets usually are rigged with USB type C connectors which are sturdier than their micro predecessors. Their build quality has been getting even sturdier from my experience, the only current con that bugs me is the 15.6 isn't mountable, but that's a first world problem.
The artist 13 still exists but its an older model so it doesn't have the newer pen or pen tilt. The 15.6 pro has pen tilt and nearly no paralax, the review I saw that directly compared it to wacoms Cintiq 16 basically showed there aren't many differences between them besides the paralax and the price. The 12 has a smaller paralax than most other screentablets and pen tilt but like you said it is a bit small.

I haven't messed too much with Huion because most reviews talk about how the drivers can be problematic.

I think that between the h1060p and the deco 03, the h1060p could be the winner in the drawings aspects right? because they are the same in specs except for the tilt that the huion has and the deco don't. The others things are just somekind of cosmetic and for comfort, like the wireless option and the wheel of the Deco 03, but in that sense it could serve more the huion that has more buttons, and the wireless thing is not so decisive in reality.

My workspace doesn't really allow me to access the keyboard without having my arm over the top of the middle of the tablet's drawing space. I'm poor as shit, with a small desk in a confined space, so that would be extremely uncomfortable, and often slower.

Eyedropper (color sampler)

And if you have an extra button, flip canvas horizontally.

Everyone eventually settles into their own ways of doing things. I use a keyboard, but I've recently started using a Nintendo Switch Joy Con via bluetooth for hotkeys, and it's really nice.

Vikoo Pen HK708S brought it cheap, dirty cheap last year. But the company goes out of business the very same year.

Still functional, but no more driver update for me. So yea~ if anything break I'm gonna look for better one. One with customizable macro, probably wacom all the way because of the software it has. Though Ugee and Huion are the more viable toward my budget.

most artists i talk to use a way of adjusting brush size that doesn't change size in set increments each time and i will never understand it. using the keyboard to change brush size is super useful because you know exactly how much your brush size has changed and you can control it much easier.

sorry if it's been asked, tl;dr

I want to start getting into digital drawing and was wondering what to start with. I'd definitely prefer being able to draw directly on the screen, but I don't have hundreds of bucks to shell out for something I might not even use much. Will a cheap tablet PC do the trick to start with?

yes but careful, depends of how many do you have, of money input, if you can't be able of buy another device in some years, and this is a long invest, is better acumulate some money to get some of more quality, than secures you to stay longer with you.
you can get a cheap tablet with stylus to get used to the medium, like the old samsung galaxy notes tablets, that still work really fine with the android programs to the date. Or you can get those notebook kind of tablet pc as you said, like the hp ones.
But yeah and old model you do the job better probably, they are more cheap too

Wouldn't everyone here just be more confident in making a purchase for something that is known to be (a bit) more reliable, like Wacom prodcuts.

At the end of the day, youre paying for the support and the brand as well. Those arent just meme things.

Genuinly wondering if some brands can compete head to head with wacom these days?

Going by comments here and elsewhere, the Chinese knock offs have improved (some of them) to the point they're fine to buy and use. My worry is the cheaper price means cheaper materials and cut corners, that will have an impact down the road. I know from years of owning wacoms, they last forever, so the cost is all front loaded - pay extra now, but the odds are pretty good it'll still work in 10 years. I have a "backup" Bamboo in my laptop bag that I used daily at my job for years, I bought it so long ago I don't remember exactly when, and it still works perfectly, pen included.

Maybe the Chinese tablets are that good, but they haven't been around long enough to know. And, If I were a broke college student, that's what I'd buy. Wacoms are for when you can afford it.

Ordered a Deco Pro S for 70$ with it. It works for the M too.
My guess is it's only there to boost pre-orders/launch sales and will be gone after this Summer, since it doesn't make sense to sell their newest and supposedily best product at a cheaper price than all the rest they have to offer. But don't quote me on this.

i picked the huion giano because i personally enjoy a large surface to draw on. in my own experience i've never had huge software issues with it while i've heard a lot of others have issues with their wacoms. i don't even really care about pressure levels, i just need something that comfortably reads pen input. i've had the tablet for 2 years now and it's working fine so far.

I has a problem with photoshop and the pressure, but i see the web and literally today they put a new driver, installed and its works all fine now.
They are really pushing the models with several updates of the drivers, this is the third of the month, thats really fine but as i said allways check to have the last one.

>Genuinly wondering if some brands can compete head to head with wacom these days?

Xp-Pen is a Japanese company that sells solid bricks of quality with a usb-c port that will outlive you.
Windows drivers are great, linux drivers exist, also supports Digimend.

Unlike Wacom they don't use a special wearing out coating that burns through the nibs like a machine gun and then wears itself out UNEVENLY.

That's just scummy bullshit and planned obsolescence right there.

Sa for the price and economics i explained it above >>3969106
Tldr Wacom are established around exorbitant prices and are desperate enough to implement aforementioned materials into their top products.

Honestly they are against the wall, they can chose to cut their workforce in three and try to adapt to the new 100$ price point or just go bankrupt.

How much of an upgrade is the XP-Pen Artis 15.6 pro to the regular? The tilt and anti-glare sound nice. I've had the 15.6 for a couple of years now, it's a bit worn, but still works fine. The price isn't a big deal, but I keep waiting for a sale, just in case.
