try studying pics of holographic clothing/ material to get a feel.... Also think a lot about reflected light and use a lot of pink/bluish color palettes. basically just think about making the coloring look as vibrant and rainbow colored as possible while still making it subtle

Load up several of Rei's paintings in your drawing program and spend a long time going over them with the eyedropper, preferrably while drawing your own figures and coloring them (I tried it with the lassoo, hard round and blend tool in CSP). Note the balance between warm and cold colors, and where they use grays. When do they indicate plane changes by value, and when do they do it by color? What happens with color at the terminators and at the highlights, etc.

>> No.3938865

My best guess is that they are playing with warm and cool colors for the midtones and blending them. This is something you would have to experiment with until you get a feel for it. I'm sure this sort of thing is covered in traditional painting but I'm not well versed enough yet to say for sure. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Good luck, OP. Keep asking questions and ignore the crabs.

reminds me of some of the basic principles of impressionism/pointillism where they juxtaposed different pigments to mimic how colors actually mixed in the light spectrum. I don't think it's that complex, whatever temperature shift the artist does it's still within the same value. if you have shadows and lights on different layers you can just crank them in different directions while paying attention to values. Maybe a color blend layer?

You know, these actually look quite a bit like wash and underpaint methods. I don't know a more exact name or term since I didn't go to art school, but Marco Bucci covers how to experiment more with colors in his youtube series. One of the videos talks about color harmony. The other one is his "color notes" stuff, where he talks about adding small splashes of color to things to make them interesting. Essentially, you can add sort of color "vibrations" to certain areas or surfaces in your piece by adding a base wash of local color, and then mixing your base color slightly into different hues of the same value to make very subtle and soft shifts in hue across a surface. When you additional strokes on top, the bottom washes and different colors blend in with the details on top, but shine through in the imperfections. It's a really interesting technique that he uses. Pic related. It's a really good example of his work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LhcNbFMkTw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFoKmX0LfCs

These are the videos. They both essentially talk of the same thing, but the first one talks about how greys (and color in general) of different hues can look vastly different from the colors that surround them, while the second video talks about the underpainting method to add the smalls hints and splashes of color.

Also, keep in mind that getting the effect works best when you have proper edge control. Might be time to walk away from those hard round dogmatists and find some brushes that solve your problems in interesting ways (or even better, make your own damn brushes). All for hard round, but if you want to go for a painterly look, you need more interesting edges that can be laid down efficiently that hard round can't do. You can do it in hard round, but you'll fucking hate yourself and it will take forever.

You still have to pick out proper colors while using overlay. Overlay just combines screen and multiply layer modes, and it's used as a tool for spot-correcting contrast and value. If you are looking to keep your value consistent while only looking to add small hints of varying color to certain areas, this blend mode is pointless as well, since overlay will only change value, and it only shifts hue if you paint with a hue that's not black or white and is different from the base color, effectively making it a tool that "paints with light", where you can think of bright areas of your piece as shifting in hue because the lighting is colored (eg lighting a red ball with a blue light will look very different than painting a red ball with a white light)

In general, overlay and most forms of blend modes should be avoided to achieve certain effects since most can be done by simply painting on a normal layer with a color picker. Overlay is very useful, but it's basically just a combined dodge/burn tool that's especially useful for photographers. However, your colors should always be picked competently over using blend modes, since blend modes can be unruly if you don't understand their intended purpose.
