What do you guys do when your will to draw disappears completely? Not the meme kind where you 'keep going if you don't want to', because even then the will still exists, but legitimately not caring anymore.

That's usually when I stop drawing for a week or so to instead play vidya and shitpost, but once I return to drawing I improve. So be happy, just keep frequenting this board and you will produce better drawings once you resume your art.

Today my sinusitis was horrible and I sneezed every few seconds. It was just impossible to draw. I just did other stuff, went outside to buy some supplies I needed, organized my old art into folders, got rid of some bad drawings, and so on.
When I simply don't feel like drawing for whatever reason I just write instead.

Switching mediums sometimes helps me. Sometimes I'll even switch to music or writing, even though I'm shit at it. At least I don't feel like an unproductive loser.

You might be depressed. You could try SSRIs, but apparently they work more to help the sadness aspect of depression, not the lack of interest. Stimulants are really good for getting motivated, but if you're not careful you'll come to rely on them. You won't be able to enjoy drawing while sober. That's not fun, speaking from experience.

Draw something different. Something you normally wouldn't draw and don't worry about the result, just do it on your sketchbook, so no one can see it.

Unless your trying to get into it for a living then I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m pretty on and off myself but your stagnation will only prolong itself. However if you are trying to make a living out of it I’d see take 3 days off or something then stop being lazy

I stop until the depression of not doing anything becomes greater than the suffering of exerting the effort to make a good drawing.

I have this problem periodically. Outside of drawing I don't have anything fun I can do, I have a hard time finding movies or shows worth watching, so all I do is draw even when it sucks. If I'm having a bad day usually it doesn't suck the whole night, just the first few hours.

I can attest to this. I often get in a funk and changing the pens I use, going from trad to digital, or changing how I'm working always seems to respark the flame. I started using those cheap crayola washable color markers the other day and drew like 10 hours with them I was having so much fun.

I think the bottom line is you got to just do it when it sucks.

Stop doing it, for a year or more, after which I have to relearn a lot. It's terrible and I hate myself.

keep working, you should relly more on discipline than motivation.

To be clear, I made the disctinction
>Not the meme kind where you 'keep going if you don't want to'
Because I HAVE been relying on discipline for the 1 year and a half that I've been practicing. It's not that I'm not disciplined. I've practiced for hours even when I didn't want to. It's just that my will/want to even practice to get better just disappeared. It's an entirely different feeling than working through motivation.

You could say it's essentially motivation that I lost but it's the same, and it is, but this feeling isn't something I can just work through because I suddenly no longer care about drawing enough to improve. It's just gone. Discipline has worked for me before for an extremely long time, but this time it doesn't seem to be the solution since it's kinda deeper than that.
And I'm thinking it's just a matter of taking a break. I took a 2 or so month break while also doodling whatever even when I didn't want to to see if that would spark anything, and only now am I starting to want to draw again. Hopefully it isn't temporary.
Oh and I've still doodled here and there.
>>3936797
I doodled stuff sometimes for fun while on the break I did.
>>3936874
Can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. It's like a cycle.
>>3936884
I have an art folder for this but I never open it. I'll try to see if it makes the difference. Does this work for you when you don't want to draw at all?
>>3936994
I'm practicing other things like Japanese and being disciplined in that. I think it's just that I burned myself out in practicing even when I didn't want to.
>>3937013
Drawing out of my comfort zone is actually what I did before I stopped. Maybe my frustration at that is what triggered it. I enjoy being bad because I know I'll get better but it can still be annoying to make bad stuff sometimes.
>>3937044
lol, that's exactly what I just did recently.
>>3937532
>I have this problem periodically.
Same here. It's like my discipline lasts only a year or two.

Change the time of day you draw. If you work in the evening, try drawing immediatly after waking or breakfast. I dont think artistic creativity and routine are compatible, so mix up the routine.

>Does this work for you when you don't want to draw at all?
It sparks my interest in illustration and makes me go "I wish I could do that", at least, which is enough to get me back to the struggle of practicing.
Feeling appreciation for good craftmanship definitely helps.
