really clean lineart is #1 IMO
I draw in the opposite style, very rough and textural and my work looks unattractive as a thumbnail. I can't help it because I do detail heavy stuff and I use muted natural colors like ochres and browns etc.
If you use very clean even lines and fill them with flat bright colors with no shading your work will read a lot better as a thumbnail, then you just put a punchline in it or a meme or whatever. Fanart also works because it reads well as a thumbnail, you're going to recognize Hellboy immediately in a thumbnail because you already know the design.
I think it's all about getting people to click on the content, the issue I've seen with my art is that very few people will click on it but many people who click will like it afterwards.
Basically social media and smartphones are cancer.

Keep a clean general image. Don't spam your feed with random shit.
Make interesting thumbnails that'll push people to click- tiny writings, details etc.
That's more vague but- try to connect with bigger artists.

I like them. Not enough to check his site for them or fucking pay for them, but I find them enjoyable when we cross paths. It's like the other anon said, a novel look at some shit we take for granted. The joke is basically "ain't societal norms weird?" and would probably wear thin if I had to see them every fucking day, but seeing one at a time every so often keeps it fresh and funny sometimes.

I remember Nathan Pyle from our Threadless.com days back in the sites golden age (pic related is one of his from back them). Even back before he got big, I remember him being him always being a very wholesome dude when he was just getting started.

He got really popular because he worked really hard creating all sorts of "wholesome" relatable content far before the strange aliens comic strip, consistently making & posting it for years. He already had built up a huge following, he had published 2 quirky illustrated books about NYC etiquette which were both NYT bestsellers. His following already loved this type of stuff, and when he started the alien strip, he already had a dedicated following of over a million fans (800k FB, 600k IG, 150K Twitter). He consistently posted on a regular basis on several social media sites and created work that regular people found enjoyable and - more importantly - shareable. He sells merch with this stuff on it, he made a book out of the aliens (on Amazon), has a successful Patreon and continues to grow.

I'm honestly really happy for him. He deserves the success.

People got pissed because he voiced support for the March for Life. He's a very Christian dude and is against abortion. However, he is not conservative - he stated in an interview that he is liberal and votes Democrat. It's my best guess that he is anti-abortion but still pro-choice.

Relying on luck in any regard is a bad business move. It's nice to take advantage of it when it does strike, but you absolutely have to have a more sturdy, reliable & actionable plan to meet your goals.
