The way her forehead and nose are lit so strongly does clash a bit with the shadows from the trees, unless it's another light than the moon, quite close to her. I personally think it flies since it sculpts her profile in a good looking way.

looking good doesn't necessarily equate to soul though. It's the same reason why amateur art can have so much soul, yet pro art can be soulless. The amateur art, although extremely flawed, shows the genuine passion the person put in. Pro art is often done in the most efficient way possible to shit it out faster, and is "safer" to get a wider appeal, thus losing soul. Not to say that bad art always means it has soul.

No, it's not. I can understanding defending him as he's technically better than anyone on this board, but the background and the girl are completely unrelated in every possibly way. The lighting doesn't match without any explanation why (yes bouncing light, but why isn't she affected by the main light source), she's half naked in the snow at night without any explanation why, the levels of details aren't on the same level and so on.

It's not because he's Ruan Jia that he can't possibly make some choices that negatively affect the quality of his art just because he somehow fucking feels like it.

I occasionally see this guy's stuff on artstation and I didn't know people sucked his dick so much here. I mean he's good technically, has a shiny style with colors done a certain way but that's about it. His original designs with armor/creatures/whatever are alright. If you ask me his style kind of gets in the way of rendering things so that there's proper depth in his stuff.
