I think it would benefit from a more consistent light source. The whole thing is sort of in uncanny valley. Its not totally flat but at the same time the lighting isnt believable. First of all you need to make a focal point where you place most of the detail and contrast. This is like the most elemental thing that makes environments look interesting.
Second thing is that if these green things are actually glowing they should cast light on other parts of environment. Right now only the air around them picks up their light.

Definitely interesting but what stands out immediately to me is that it's not geometrically perfect and with this style of architecture that's kind of the point. It's like the Parthenon. The columns all have to be perfectly straight and parallel and in perspective. All the rows of bricks, the arches. It really has to be perfect so next time you do one of these, perfect the sketch before you start laying in the shading.

Also experimented with a brush, which was really fun. I use a Microsoft store app called Concepts and it's the most fun I've had digitally drawing. I'm not one to remark on traditional stuff, because I really don't draw traditionally, but this app sells the nicest pencil/pastel tools I've tried. What blows my mind is that it's a vector-based program. I can work in and export stupidly high resolution on a standard powered modern laptop (8gb ram, i5 processor). Like 300dpi at billboard dimensions. I'm not pulling your fucking leg.

I want to elaborate on how weird this brush is. All those thin sharp lines and broad background strokes were with the same brush and size. The main control was pen tilt. It was pretty finicky though, using something that was so wildly sensitive to tilt, and I'm not sure it's entirely practical to rely exclusively on this one brush for a drawing, but it was a lot of fun.

It does make sense to me that part of the eye should be hidden by the nose since the nose has depth to it. I understand that but do you mean no foreshortening or are you saying it's negligible in a cartoon style?

really great job anon, love the stylization of the fur and face/horns. couple things tho

i feel like above the breasts the pose elongates a bit too much and seems to separate from the skeleton of the body though, and careful with the perspective of the breasts/nipples, seems like one on the right could be wrapped around the egg-like form of the ribcage more at the top, joining with the mass of the pectoralis. also, this is pretty nitpicky but it seems like the place where the neck joins into the jaw is too dark in value, pushed back into space maybe a bit too far, i can't really feel the connection of the muscles to the bottom of the jaw. i might be autistic, tho.

is DAD worth posting in? i've been eyeing it for a couple years and wondering if I should start. i mean, I draw everyday on my own, but it just seems nice. do you like it?

Ahh, I don't know how to proceed. It's always the same, at some stage I think 'oh that looks cool, it could work out as a pretty okay picture', but then, I'll end up totally lost. How do I undo my lines into a somewhat rendered piece? Or should I invest hours into a lineart before rendering? I aim for a semi-realistic style without visible lines.

It’s good, anon. Needs more layers for volume, texture, detail, etc. painting in soft light or overlay can help with skin. Basically anywhere you want 3d space, add a lighter value and blend. In fact, an easy way to work without line art is to do as you’ve done, blend it all out, and then begin painting hard edges as you have here in again with more subtlety. Repeat that process as many times as you can stomach to get more and more of a rendered look. Darken the darkest bits and push the lightest highlights near the end. Color burn and add are helpful there.

Is this a copy of someone else?

Anyway, you have decent sensitivity, color, brushwork so that hiding some of the mistakes.

In general the facial proportions are off. The eyes are two close together but it looks kind of rightish because you made the size of the left eye too big. From a 3/4 view the eye that's to the left is always going to be shorter then the other because as it's turning away it'll hide the outside corner because of the way eyelids wrap around eyes. Look up a photo of a face from that angle and compare the horizontal lengths of the eyes and you'll see what i mean. Also, like i said the eyes are too close together, they should be one eyelength apart using the size of the right eye.

The area/strip(it's called the philtrum) connecting the nose and the lips is off, It's not connecting to the bottom of the nose correctly and it's not going in the same direction as the rest of the features; it's effecting the tops of the lips so it looks like the lips aren't turned enough in comparison to the other features.
It also looks like the neck is too thick at the top and the ear appears to be too far to the side.

I lowered the saturation and contrast, but kept some things I thought should stay more saturated to stand out, like the apron, nose and flames. Probably should've made the vegetables more saturated too.

Your values and color composition need work.

Convert your panel to greyscale.

Look what happens to the focus, ie. the figure. It disappears - because the two hues are too close in value. So, basically, the focus is now essentially wallpaper.

Now, look at it in greyscale, again. What catches your eye first? The pot, and the apron, and the entire lower third of the panel. The upper 2/3rds don't matter, you've made the table and the contents the focal point.

Now, color composition. The lower third is fine, you could tweak a little, but it works. But tied into the values, the bright yellow of the background is competing with the focus of the figure.

Try another color for the background. Something either darker or lighter in value to the focus, so it pops off the panel. Try different hues, taking cues from the lower third - try greens, browns, oranges, and greys. Blue/violet would break the scheme you have going.

Always look at your work in greyscale to keep an eye on value. That's the only real issue you have here.

If you only wanted critique about light, form and design you should have said so before wasting anon's time. Without you requesting otherwise people will point out whatever stands out to them.

Your drawing is wrong which means there's already a hard limit on how accurate you can light your planes and place your cast shadows. You're not doing anything complex with your light sources so I don't know what sort of critique you want that a simple reference won't answer.

There isn't much to say about the design. The collar is interesting, the crown is too abstract and nonfunctional. You've given yourself too little to design with such a tight crop on the face. What does the rest of the costume look like? What period/fantasy setting is is? What type of character is this and how can you show it?

You clearly wanted to jump into rendering for the sake of rendering. You're forcing the most superficial component of Ruan Jia's aesthetic, the result is sloppy and rushed.

The entire face is a jumble of different planes of space - the eyes are on a different plane from the nose, which are on a different plane from the mouth. It looks like eyes, nose and mouth were clipped from different images, and pasted onto a layer, and the painting worked up from that.

The pink sclera of the eyes doesn't work for me at all. (Sclera - white of the eye)

I agree that this is a rushing towards the special effect, style-over-substance typical of artists like Ruan Jia.

The color composition is pleasing to the eye, but the major foundational issues are obvious to me - but wouldn't be to a casual audience on social media.

To the anon who did this - if this level of foundational work is fine with you - then it's fine. But to my eye - and I have more hours painting than most anons here have been alive, you need more work on facial construction, before you rush to the special effects. But that's my opinion, it's your art.

It's not that it's not a valid critique, it's just a bummer for me.

Whenever I post my art, people are always like "You're trying to paint like Ruan Jia. Stop it. Specifically, stop using textured brushes" I get this RJ-copycat harassment constantly.

Anyways, most of these paintings are an exercise to get more familiar with painting accurate forms, better values and better edge work.

When I focus on perspective and structure, I have no issues with it. But I can't juggle both at this point, and I feel like light and form are much harder to get a comfortable grasp of than structure and anatomy, so my focus is shifted there.

Also, I don't know how to shake people thinking I'm trying to basically become RJ 2.0 short of literally attempting to emulate someone else that doesn't look anything like RJ. But I like the way that I paint, and the result is much, much less belabored and deliberate than you guys think it is.

>>3926967
It's perfectly decent for a school project. The brushwork is probably the weakest aspect though. Too much contrast between the blurry shading of the skin and the messy brushwork of the hair. The presentation and composition are fine though. The white frame might not be necessary.

I figured I might as well post some in this thread too. I'm making adjustments on these skeches to post them online eventually. I'll try to correct the wonkier parts but I'm mostly looking for advice on composition and presentation.

>>3927681
It does look better. Yeah the tangent with the tomato can be changed by moving it just a little to the left. I'm still not entirely convinced with the overall tones. There is more contrast on the lower part and not enough around the face. It could be slightly more graphic. Looks great anyway. You can take a few days away from it and come back for the final adjustments with a fresh eye.

>>3927665
The best advice I can think of would be to use a tool that allows you to vary lineweight like an inkbrush. Your lines will look more confident. If you want to work more on this one your next step could be to add simple shadow shapes with a transparent wash and a big brush.

>>3927649
It looks good but the white of the background will mess up your perception of values. If you want to focus on the values and painting I suggest you work on a neutral grey background.

>>3927607
That is just dope

it was pretty much about a large stone golem standing on the floor of the universe in front of a few stars. Next to him was a conveyor belt that carried various types of trash that he placed into the stars to burn. Different types of trash for different stars. After a while he found beauty in certain things and encased them in glass boxes to hang in the sky as constellations. He finds over time that he has found beauty in so many things except for intelligent life because they usually kicked and screamed and made an awful smell and gunked up the stars so he'd have to clean them. He one day sees a little boy come down the conveyor belt and decides to put him into his own special box with toys and a bed and such. Eventually the little boy pretty much pisses and shits all over the glass box and he hurls him into one of the stars and burns him. The End
