said, getting a brushpen is a good idea, I would also recomend natural bristle brushes. Pony hair is good and not so expensive, they're way better for very fluid things than the syth brushes. Just take good care of them so they last.

Also, this is a bit late, but thanks for the coment Banana! Stuff like that really pushes me to try my best. Even if most of my stuff is meh right now, I think joining DAD is the most productive art thing I've done in quite a while. Hope you're all progressing well guys.

Scott Roberson's How to Draw actually explains how to draw the ficking grid with all the vanishing points outside of the sheet.
Which us why i don't respect or recommend anything else.

The fucking grid is the actual practical way to go while this method is practically useless considering the points are almost never inside your paper/canvas.

I had a horrible sense of dread about posting some years ago, I starting posting o nseveral sites and quickly realized that nobody gave a shit. With time, I started to even welcome people telling me something's shit because I prefer someone caring to help me get better and tell me that I'm a fuckwit and do better this and that, over emty and shallow praises like "looks nice". And posting on DAD everyday has made me realize that cosntnatly working helps you improve by showing you how much you have to improve by helping you observe your general skill level. I don't actually think remembering why you started drawing matters. What matters anon is knowing why you're drawing now.
I mean, I started drawing to draw cute anime girls and get attention from people and have them think I'm cool. Then I actually ended up witnessing good art, discovering fundamentals, and how powerfull drawing can be when acompanied with good craftsmanship.
Now I draw to try to express myself in a way that can reach people the same way the artists I love and admire have reached and changed me, I want to add some beauty to the world a little bit. As long as you know in the present why you're drawing, you're fine.

I partly blame my mistakes on that. I'm rambling now, but I used to draw really tense and timid, and erased a lot. it made my proportions always end up looking to tight and squeezed in. I've tried to erase very little/never and tried to exaggerate my shapes a bit more, which leads to shit like that beer belly and giraffe leg. you can still see the timidity though in the arm and head. the face and hand and mostly everything else though is just raw lack of skill, so no excuses there.
just trying to say, I at least have a little self awareness of what to work on. I'd rather keep drawing too exaggerated rather than too timid, because at least then I'm relaxed and it feels more natural

I guess I should ask this in /beg/ but since there are some dads here who are doing some pretty dope paintings, I thought i'd ask...
Any idea how to get started with painting when I've literally never done any before?
I've only just drawn for like 4 years, and I kinda just struggle immensely with the idea of making shape read without lines but just values, it's like there is a mental block and it's put me off painting for way too long, but I really want to get started.

If you're a lineart guy having trouble being able to see value/color shapes then, I would recommend trying to do your lines but to add value blocks in the way that you see in developing anime for value regions. Just being able to break something down into a few distinct value shapes is a good starting point. If you're an ink guy, maybe use a brushpen to create block-in regions to help you see a bifurcated value shape, then maybe add in gray if you feel comfortable with that. If neither of those are useful to you, maybe just take a reference image and try to imagine what the major shapes are of it, and then throw it into photoshop or whatever software will let you posterize it with low levels so that you can see the major shapes clearly and compare that to what you imagined.

I'm actually not much of a lineart either, I do lots of cross contour and working lines inside my shapes, sometimes I try to render with more lines but for some reason when it's time to do it with strokes and values my brain ceases to function entirely. I actually attend a workshop where I study under a professor from art school (it's liek artschool but quite cheap and you get the tutor to focus on you and other 5 gits instead of a classroom of 40 dumbwits)

If you can do something like that, I'd massively recomend it, just look for someone that's a good teacher. Regarding stuff like groupchats. Just jump in, I used to have bad social anxiety and I'm still rather reluctant to joining such things. But as long as you're not a total sperg, I doubt anyone will care.

Do you really think that is all there is to art? And have you never experienced the incapacity to really judge something you've spent numerous hours making and looking at.
If I'm trying to make a painting that expresses sadness and melancholia for example it's a whole other story. Expressing emotions with visual art is a very subtle thing and knowing if I managed - and if not, why - is absolutely not a given for anyone or as simple as "looking at it".
It's not exactly a secret that most great artists have had numerous mentors throughout their lives. Yes at a beg level you can look at your drawing and realize you gave that girl a giraffe neck and try to fix, but eventually you get to a point where your problems are less technical and much harder to adress on your own without help.

I do draw, I do try to analyze my own work and correct it, I do post on this board and take criticism, and it is the closest I can get to having others help me out with art but it's still very disconnected and surface level.
I just wanted to say that it would be nice to have people I know directly and can look up to provide some form of guidance, that's all man.
And also i'm not a fucking nigger.

It is just a nice place to see other people trying hard and feel less alone. Before joining dad I was already drawing daily for over a year, so for me nothing has changed much, I now just upload the stuff I usually just saved on my drive and never looked on, that's all.

But it's the sense of community I guess, of belonging somewhere and being amongst many others who are also trying, who must also - at least in some way - love art. That is what DAD is to me.

Some only reply to questions or "deep" discussions.
Some don't reply to anyone and that doesn't really impact their popularity.

As a form of constant pressure to make myself work on what matters, not that I find that "pressure" uncomfortable. It's more like having someone who puts their hand on your shoulder every morning and says "I'm counting on you, do your best". Actually, you should be really proud of yourself for facing your fears and going out. I'm a recovered Hiki myself, I know how hard it is to even get that far.

You're going to hate what I'm about to say but I'm going to give you the tough truth- the best way to make up for a "bad" experience when you go out is to go out 3 more times and have a "good" experience, so you need to keep going if you want to get better. It's hard as hell, but that's what worked for me. Doesn't have to be fancy either, just go buy some icecream or something. (That said, if you like living like that it's fine, I get it. I know this isn't the place to say this, DaDs, but today is a rough one for me.
I'm trying to recover from an addiction that has been destroying my life, and I woke up with the most intense cravings.

I feel like clawing at my head, I hate my brain, i'm trying my hardest to just focus on my studies and thinking about drawing time in a few hours if I hold on. It's like something relentlessly assaulting you, and you have to turn it away and say no over and over and it keeps coming back.
A part of me wishes I was good enough at art that I could paint something to try to just express that, how it feels. I have no idea if I'll manage today. If my streak breaks you'll know I fucked up I guess
