Not to compound stress, but having done things like this myself, you should actually budget savings until you can buy the items one at a time.

I'm shit with money, so I get it, just saying. I guess you can still draw from a cardboard box, but it cant be fun

Traditional art supplies are expensive.
I bought an entirely new pack of copic markers, sketchbooks, a drawing stand, acrillic paints, a storage box to put all of them in, and a new camera.

That seems like a pretty arbitrary amount. Shouldn't the focus be less on the sheer numbers, and more on the quality of improvement between drawings? Why should one or two highly detailed finished pieces be worth less than a 4-5 page quota?

>> No.3916157

>>3916128
Yeah its an arbitrary amount because 4 drawings a day for a year = almost 1500 pages of drawings. The idea is that literally no matter how you approach it you're guaranteed to get better from drawing that much.

There really is no way to quantify the ideal amount of drawing you should do or the time spent doing it. Perhaps you could look at atelier programs and structure your self-studying according to that. What works no matter what is practicing as smart as possible, as focused as possible, as often as possible.

The fuck are you people doing? You don't need to buy complete sets of shit when you run out of something. You only need like 12 colors, and if your using them all evenly you got more problems than the cost of paint.

>> No.3916179

>>3916157
That's a fair answer, and one I can agree with. Although I do think if there are quantity goals, they should be structured fairly loosely. When you're just starting off, drawing that much could potentially lead to burnout very quickly.

Idk about OP, but I personally tend to aim for something I'm satisfied with when I draw, which can mean several pages full or only one, depending on the day. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that route because it's inefficient as practice, but it works for me (usually).

How much you should be drawing is how much you can handle without getting tired and losing interest.

But at the same time you need to strive to increase your work capacity, the amount of time you can draw and learn efficiently without getting tired or distracted. I'm trying to do that right now by setting a timer for however long I want to work and trying to stick to it. Time spent of genuine high effort practice is a good barometer how much you should improve.

One of my favorite artists (Dean Cornwell) was noted to have drawn and painted in "seventeen-hour days, seven days a week".

God damn, yeah I don't think I could live on only 7 hours of sleep, let alone do only art.

But yeah, unfortunately, I'm one of those losers with multiple hobbies, so focusing purely on art like that is not something I could be reasonably asked to do. I probably won't make it big with that attitude, but the constant drive to improve is still there across everything I do. I'll probably make a decent jack of all trades by the time I'm 50.

Everyone forgets that all these people with insane work ethic were actually working. I'll draw 15 hours a day and do crunch if I'm getting paid for it, I am a person who will bleed himself to death to get a job done.
If I'm not working I won't squeeze myself like that for no reason just to practice.
>you should squeeze yourself no matter what
Ideally yes but ideally you should also get paid for it. Maybe pennies but you should get paid.
