Should I redraw the same piece over and over until it's good looking? Is that a good way to improve yourself or is it a time waster and it's better to focus on quantity > quality?

What I mean is that I've been trying to draw a portrait. My first attempt was quite shitty, the second one is better but still far from my desired outcome. I guess that the third one would be better and the fourth one would be the one I wanted. And then I could move on to other things.

The other option is to leave everything on first try and move on immediately.

if it is particularly bad you save it in your failure folder with some note on what to avoid
so you can redraw it much later when your brain is reseted

Master studies are fine, just so long as you make the subject in your style. A painting/piece for every week will help your improvement.

How many finished pieces should be done in a week?

Absolutely OP. Especially with something like portraits where the smallest deviation from the true proportions can make the drawing seem off. Often I don't get a portrait looking right until the 3rd time I draw it.

What do you mean by this? You'll learn the most by trying to get your drawing as close to the master's as possible in order to learn their thought processes behind it.

I always wondered if doing your own work through emulation of other styles is more beneficial than doing an actual so called master study where you just copy an existing piece of that artist's work.

Like if I want to execute my own idea and do it with Ruan Jia style for example, I feel like I learn a lot more that way than if I just copied his personal piece. I don't know.
