It's really hard to do some of these without full body but I tried by best. Wasn't entirely sure how I could have made him look older, sorry! While drawing, I thought maybe he is using the robotic eye to zoom in on the stock exchange or something, watching his investments continue to rise.

Symbol drawing, especially with faces, is what messes people up the most. Don't think "time to draw the nose" but rather "time to connect these angles from x and y. Does that make sense? :(

I used to pick colours right from the ref a lot which is really bad. Now if I’m doing a photo study, I always attempt to match the colours before I go in and pick from the ref. For example, try to get close to the colour, then swatch it on the area you are trying to emulate. It’s a good way to see how you perceived it wrong, whether it’s too cool/warm, saturated, etc. If I still can’t get it after a few tries, I’ll leave it as is if it looks okay, but if I’m REALLY having a hard time, another thing you can do when practicing is pick flat colours to fill in the different areas, then use it as a reference point for other colours. And like I said before, as stupid as this sounds, you really have to think about it. I recently had a bit of a turning point where I did some study that was posted here and I tried to make sense of the colours I was choosing, like the undertones, why it was that way, etc. That really helped me.


When I do stuff from imagination in colour, I use the yellow/red/blue thing. Obviously it’s pretty shitty right now but I hope I can begin to bridge the gap with more practice. ;-;

Thank you for your advice on drawing portraits. Since this thread I've been doing faces more often than usual. Thinking about it as angles and abstract volumes has helped. What I struggle with the most I think is eyes, there is always something off about eyes on my portraits, maybe alignement or shape.

Anyway I will stop this isn't /beg/ after all, thank you for this thread and these lovely portraits. Your blog is awesome.
