TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

How the fuck does this chink make these small bends and curves in the form look so convincing? I already understand how to make shit look not flat, but it ends in most of my forms looking like vases.

My issue is how do I make my forms more dynamic? The only experience I have with art has been some drawabox and this course by Peter Han so I don't know if this is a mileage or visual reference issue.

One of the things that took me the longest time to learn is that the process behind making 3D forms look convincing very much so follows 'the sum is greater than the whole' adage. As in, the lines, the shading, the lighting, all of it adds up to a form that has depth. If you have just the lines, or just the shadows, it will look flat.

The thing is, nobody can simultaneously create all of these. You have build them on top of each other, and, at each step, convince yourself that the form is 3D, not the rendering. I often got tripped up by this. Like, I added the lines, then tried to add shadows that accommodated the LINES and NOT the form.

tldr: don't second guess yourself while making the form and it'll come together at the end

Was just a bit distracted. Just pick whatever you're most interested in now. In time you'll experiment with all sorts of styles and techniques but you need to start somewhere so start with what you like the most, what will give you the most determination on your long trip through beg town. Whatever you decide on break it down, research the building blocks that are used in creating that art. The building blocks in most cases are going to be the fundies. Some fundamentals are going to be used more in some styles/techniques then others so jot the big ones down, start studying and add new things to study as you see fit. Something not fundies to study might be different brush and paint types if you wanted to do paintings so just keep in mind to study the key components to whatever you are learning.

This is just how i approach practicing so take from it what you will.

I'm pretty new myself, so take this with a grain of salt:

1. The wrinkle going from the base of the top arm to the sternum looks a bit off, not sure if that actually exists on real models. On clothing I'd understand it, but on skin it looks unusual.

2. Look more into drapery drawing from the shoes and the pants. I see the lines indicating folding, but the contours are almost nonexistent.

3. Torso is 100% too small. Remember, it's 3 heads long. Yours is 2~ heads.

4. The traps are like noodles on this guy, make them slightly more rounder

As for the other muscles, I like them! You have some issues with the placement of the muscle groups, but I can only see those problems if I'm really looking for them, nice work

Thanks!

1. Foreshortening on the left hand (from the perspective of the viewer) seems off. Not too off, but definitely to the point where it's noticeable. Speaking of that hand, where did the thumb go?

2. Drapery is EXTREMELY off. Those are some very complex shapes on the shoulder, and the lines you've put don't give it justice. Not sure how to fix that, I don't even attempt fabric like that. The skirt is easier to fix though, I'd recommend looking into moderndayjames videos for fabric studies.

3. Knees are hard to get right, so I'm not expecting very realistic ones in the /beg/ thread. But an easy step forward is to realize that in the position that the girl is in, the knee will have a very clear contour to it. Adding that contour adds some extra depth to the drawing

I'm gonna ignore the face because I'm not great at critiquing stylized faces. I do like the bow though!

not him but i'd recommend vilppu's figure drawing and hamton as opposed to loomis, loomis is fine for the head construction though. Also the reason he recommended figure drawing is because the body is really disproportionate and stiff. For example the neck is too long, the arms are different lengths, the hands are different sizes, the head is a bit small, the forearm is shorter than his upper arm, etc.

It is great that you are focusing on anatomy too Anon. Keep in mind however that gesture drawing is just about a quick plan for establishing the directions, angles and the basic shape of the body, drawing basic "sack people" is enough you do not need details.

Try to establish the main lines and the directions of the spine/torso the angles of the shoulders and the hips

About yours the two arms are visibly uneven, the chest and pecs look flat and the neck is too wide and the head is too big. The neck is actually an extremely flexible part of the body, try to make it longer and thinner in the future.

I see that you are aware of them when the fingers are bending, but you seem to ignore them when the fingers are straight. When straight, there's a subtle curve to the fingers that, when drawn, can help out a lot when avoiding 'needle hand syndrome'

I forget the type of clothing this guy is wearing (yukata? maybe?), but it's a very 'foldable' material. Looking into drapery tutorials, it'll help. You're missing a lot of folds, and the folds you do recognize, you aren't accentuating correctly.

The facial proportions aren't bad, but the actual features seem rushed and not well-thought out. Draw eyes, noses, and lips by themselves for practice.

Otherwise....it's not bad. Okay, I take that back, it's bad, but I partially think that's because you aren't using good drawing materials. It looks like you've drawn this with a very blunt No.2 pencil. especially in the shaded areas. If this is the case, do yourself a favor and invest in some good mechanical pencils for a start or, if you have the money, a drawing pencil kit.

>> No.3892532

Okay thank you for giving the feedback. I think you're right about the rushed face and especially about the lack of folding in the clothing. The real thing seems to flow a lot more and I couldn't quite get it. I'm confused about the last part though, is it normal to use a mechanical pencil to shade? And what exactly would be a drawing pencil?

>> No.3892543

>>3892532

Drapery is weird, but it's one of those things in drawing that 'clicks' very fast once you find a tutorial that explains it well.

Mechanical pencils aren't the norm, but they're much better than just using a random, unsharpened pencil. Drawing pencils are something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Langnickel-SPEN-12-Essentials-Sketching/dp/B003B44N8W/ref=zg_bs_12896751_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=QS48PEE81XKE0GNFB50A..

Basically, it's just a bunch of pencils that have differing levels of darkness, and they're much higher quality than the average pencil. This all side, I'm not a pencil artist (I use pens), so shop around a bit before trusting that specific product

Nice cell shading Anon! Do you do comics? :3

Not entirely sure about the light's direction sadly, a bit wonky but maybe like this? The mouth area is technically a round shape with the chin being the second one so the lip areas come outwards while on yours it appears to be going inwards.

not exactly sure what do you mean under stiff? Is it the pose or is it the faces or something else? Here I tried to address both.

On this I can see you didn't sue is the perspective to make the big guy look bigger and the smaller one smaller. The big guy is falling over to the left his leg should be more equally apart to support him.

The big guy's lowered arm contributes a lot to the stiffness, it feel like he is being embarrassed or unsure what the hell is going on around him.

A common thing for beginners - and especially here, is they get too wrapped up in "what's accurate", and not "what looks good."

It's a mix of mileage and experience - that's the only way to get the confidence to wing it with shapes and have them "look right" - a beginner has no frame of reference.

People want to rush to the stage where an artist has confidence and skills, and can't figure out how to get there, when it's always going to be the same answer: practice. When you start out, 10/10 objects suck. Then later 9/10 suck, one kind of works. Then 8, then 7, etc.

There's no 'do this, then this, profit" path to it.

It's like watching a guitarist who's been playing professionally for a decade, and going "How the fuck does he make it look so easy?" The answer is "A decade of playing." The time between when he was starting out and couldn't string 3 notes together, and now, where he plays effortlessly.

With luck and hard work, you'll start feeling more confident in less than a decade. But ask "how long has that "chink" been drawing?" if you want to know how he does it.

>> No.3892994

>>3892981
I'll add to that and say starting as a child only makes you not shit at a couple things but you don't really start to improve until you can think critically and learn effectively and efficiently. Most people were shit at 14, bad at 16, and only mediocre at 18. "I've always drawn since I was a kid" is pure marketing. It's ass busting work and study and teenagers lack the capacity for doing it well.

I'd also say that's why so many /beg/s are neurotic and lost, looking for quick solutions that don't exist and full of misconceptions.

1. BNHA is shit
2. It looks like you just took some frame from the manga and decided to redraw it exactly the same but only in your 'style' and color it.
While the color is ok it doesn't look anything special and just doesn't draw any attention to it. It is bland. That's it.
Also people don't tend to like stuff if you are not their friend, the art is related to them somehow or you are crazy good.
Its like with that study of women' preferences on that dateApp where they only choose the top looking guys and even then manage to lower their score from 1 to 10.
Pursuing likes is futile.

I would suggest trying to also choose a shading style and stick with it, You've done quite nice rendering of the face and such but then seem to have swapped to pillow shading the clothing, is there a reason for this?

sometimes the shading of something is the first thing to grab peoples attention so if you work with one shading style and get it to a level you're happy with then you might get known for that style instead of having three or four different styles within one piece

Copy/ pasting this from /sqt/qtddtot/ , maybe /beg/ can help:
I have a feeling the answer will be something related to layer mask or clipping, but how would I go about deleting work on one layer using the work on another layer as the area I want to delete? Unfortunately, the second layer is an image I'm editing, so it's not as simple as using the magic wand.

no thats not really how a visual library works. its far more complicated than that. it has to do deal with memorization, working from a reference means you have to try your hardest to remember what something lookedl ike and where it goes. or usually its the aesthetic they pull. everything has a function and thats what you have to try and remember you need to make connections with things to hep you remember. simply just trying to copy something for the sake of it is the worst way to build your memory, thats why morons who "study" anatomy this way completely forget it the next day.

there is no consistency to what i put out because i cant into contruction nor anatomy. left is first attempt, right is after a while spent trying to fix it up. cant draw tits, legs, arms or how anything connects to anything else. can't do a gesture drawing without fucking up proportion completely. can't do gesture just in general, which sucks cause i consider it the most important part of a drawing.
i've fucked with hampton, the bean and robobean, and probably some other methods of construction but i can never produce an acceptable result just like that. guess i should spend more time drawing from reference rather than trying to use other people's construction methods

dude, you're not at that level yet. you aren't even close. I don't know you. it's not a personal attack. it's an objective assessment. if you got the anatomy right, you could play with proportions. but without at least one of them it's just a mess. you drew a kangaroo or a mewtwo or something. whatever it is, has a belly button about 6 inches too low, is about 15 head lengths tall, abs that are about twice as long as they should be, dislocated hips, wrists that are too narrow, knees and calves that are too small, straight lines for the bottom half of the leg. what do you want people to tell you? this sketch is not salvagable. start over. learn the basics.

if you think i don't know that you traced from the waist up and tried to do the rest on your own, and messed it up because you aren't experienced, then you are very mistaken.

I didn't trace anything. I've used references, but I haven't traced.

I'm also tired of people ignoring the questions. It's obviously possible to make them look right within context, as I've seen drawings with similar proportions before, but once again people get caught up on what else is going on rather than actually answering what has been asked. I never asked about the body, or proportions, or what you think it looks like.

Practice hands don't avoid drawing them. Your proportions and shapes are off. You probably should study basic bone structure, also try to clean up your sketch a little once you're done so you can more clearly analyze it yourself and find mistakes. Personally, while sketching whether it's on paper or digital I usually start with a light color like a baby blue or green instead of sketching in black or gray and turning down the opacity of the sketch layer when cleaning up. It works much better, but this could be more of a personal preference.

You're lacking gesture.

Gesture drawing is best done from models, usually in a live setting, who do poses appropriate for it - a cheesecake/porn/thot pose won't teach you much about getsure, as it's mostly pose - and it's two different things.

I'm guessing you don't understand what gesture is, and are confusing it with pose. Gesture is implied movement, action, and energy. Pose is static, and that's what you drew.

Pay attention to the reference threads, and get some good poses for gesture - you should look for things like swinging arms and legs, dance, throwing, running, things like that. Gesture is about capturing the movement and energy in line.

It's going in the right direction.

I would say work on skin, and it's hues, along with value, to push the three dimensionality of it, and over all tighten up your painting, and work on smoother washes.

The face has temperature zones, yellow on top, red in the middle, blue on the bottom for men, greens and purples for women. A couple of reasons why - the center of the face has more capillaries, so it has more blood under the surface. The chin tends more towards cooler colors, because it's often partially in shadow, and cool greens will pop the reds of the mouth.

I typically start with yellow ochre, and develop the whole face, keeping the highlights free of paint. I do a wash over the whole paint, and add paint in areas where there's more hue. I let that dry completely, and then use a crimson to push the nose and mouth, and some on the inner edges of the eyes. I let that dry, and then do an overall wash of paynes grey (and cool grey will do), to establish the darkest values in the skin, and when that's dry, do smaller washes of greens and purples to pop the lower part of the face.

You don't have to do that exactly, but that's the idea. Value and hue and temperature, doing smooth washes.

Little tip - the eye isn't outlined like that. You're taking what I'm betting is makeup, and using it for the whole eye. Use color for where there's no eyeliner.

Overall, tighten up your washes, and use more hues.

The whole point is that you're too bad to paint. It makes you rethink everything about sketching because you're using the sketch as a base for form and value you weren't thinking about before. You also have to have brush control and think differently about mark making. Having to know what you're going to do at the end of a painting from the very start changes the game and forces you to build skills you didn't even know you were neglecting.

I started a week ago, I was working through Keys to Drawing, Loomis, Right Side of the Brain etc. and felt like I was getting nowhere until I started Drawabox, that website has helped me tremendously I feel. Drawabox starts with a very basic "how to hold a pen" type of stuff, how to literally draw a box and such, while the books say "just draw lol" without teaching you fundamental stuff like drawing from your shoulder from the very beginning. I don't really expect anybody to critique my frogs, I know they are shit but I'm happy because it's such a major improvement compared to my first drawings a week ago, because of Drawabox.

Learning value and color is going to be the same, conceptually, regardless of which medium you choose. Each will have different ways to get to the same result.

For a beginner, for traditional work like the sample you added to your post, oil or goauche, and focus on blending color on the paper. Watercolor, learn to handle color through layered washes. Acrylic, despite it's low cost, is harder to get simple transitions and subtle effect, because it dries so fast, and blending is much more difficult.

And, I've always been of the mindset of trying them all. You don't have to do them all at once - pick one, especially one that fits your lifestyle and studio space, and try it for a couple of months. Then try another. You won't know which one is best for you any other way. There is no universal "best" for everyone.

if you are complete noob, then use ruler yes. if you are starting to get it, best way to freehand perspective, is just to draw the outer perspective lines. one that bends in on direction, other one in the other direction and then one in the middle. so basically ur creating a giant square from the 2 extremes, and then every line inside that just has to be somewhere between those outer angles. My favorite way.

actually been some time since I drew some advanced perspective, but hope it sells the idea. You basically create the 2 outer extremes, the blue and red lines. then every from the right line to the middle line is between those angles, and every line between the middle line and the left line is between those. So its easier to draw out of imagination and not be bound to perspective lines.

im a little confused about the color zones though. it seems like for the yellow forehead, you could just simply mix white/yellow ocher/ trace amounts of whatever red and just leave it. while the mid zone you would go heavier on the reds (burnt sienna/carmine). but im completely lost when you get to the cool bottom area. imo it just seems completely retarded and is something you do to exaggerate the painting for its own sake. like skin doesnt look like out side of paintings
