You mean the solvents in the paint thinner?

Seem's like you're not cut out for it. The idea of the paint is to thin out the herd.
You either become a master, or fucking die. Why do you think turpentine is so deliciously toxic?

The masters never used turpentine. The Easterners criticized Westerners for their use of dangerous painting supplies but they couldn't have been referring to turpentine since it wasn't being used generally in the 17th century.

Actually if Spike Lavender was less expensive, you would have a huge wave of new oil paintings being produced. That would probably require government investment in the arts however, by specifically granting funding to companies that offer spike lavender so that they can compete on the market with turpentine and offer their product at a reduced price (particularly during 'plein air season'). Maybe that's unrealistic but I wish that was an avenue for Lobbyists to pursue.

Full time painter here,
Get good ventilation first of all, turps can do a lot of damage. Should not be underestimated.
Second of all use good quality turps, dont use white spirit apart from to clean brushes, Don't fuck with low-odor or lemon turps. All they do is fuck you up without you smelling it.
For proper use, put your brush cleaning spirit in a tub and never take the lid off unless you are cleaning your brushes. Always put lids on your turps to stop them getting into the air. Use small amounts in your paints and make sure you handle it with care. Dont just slop it over your pattle, move the paint to a separate container and mix it in slowly.
If you do happen to use large amounts for certain effects, do it outside, or leave the room after.
If your talking about the fumes from oils, then I'm confused. Most paints are a mix of linseed, bees wax and pigments, the majority of these do not smell, however they do sometimes have a very small amount of turpentine.

I paint in oils every days.
No idea what all the 'fumes' fuss is about. I use turps & the smell is minimal, the paints themselves don't have turps in FGS, and you can use them without mediums if you want; I often do.
The turps is kept covered in a pot when not in use, most of the paint is removed by wiping onto paper towels. You shouldn't be sloshing any thinners around whatever they are.

what are you even talking about? Your dead dad doesn't care how you thin your paint, you would be better off buying spike lavender... even if it's incredibly overpriced and just enough liquid to fill your mouth with.
