What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

couldn't decide where this was best suited to ask, but maybe you guys can help
if my goal is to be able to draw like this (and like the drawings in the album), what path should I take?
thus far I've gone through Keys to Drawing but that focuses more on realism and life studies which isn't what I'm aiming for, so I'm a little lost

my best guess is learning construction to draw from imagination, so probably Draw a Box followed by FWaP by Loomis, not sure though; any advice?

Good taste. Drawabox wouldn’t be a bad place to start, you’re looking to maximize your understanding of forms but really where his stuff shines is the creativity of his designs. I think his stuff looks more like it was learned organically over a long period of having fun with drawing than the product of rigorous study. That’s just a guess though, maybe he’s a technical master who had the epiphany that ideas carry art more than sheer skill And started having fun with it

How come, when i use very thin ink lines, it looks like a creepy traced thing? It looks normal in pencil, and it looks fine if i use thicker lines.
(it's unfinished and meant to be colored, so hopefully by the end it'll look fine, but that inked one really gives me a bad vibe).
When i add preliminary shadowing at least it looks less jarring, but still has that feel.

Trying new rendering techniques, any input welcome.

Your drawing on the left uses hatching and has more varied values than the one on the right, which softens and rounds out the forms on the face. Your one on the middle with the thin lines have none of that, so you don’t see any of those forms and it looks weird and traced. You got any pictures with just the thick lines and without the hatching?

>You got any pictures with just the thick lines and without the hatching?
Something like this, where i was trying to be more anime (as per client's request) than i usually am, would work as an example? Left is without rendered shadowing; right is the finished thing.
This was the one that made me think i went too phat with my ink lines, and had to tone that down, though now i'm not sure.

>> No.3882337

>>3882286
I think as you move further away from a realistic style, the more you can get away with less/flatter shading. The first example you posted is pretty close to realistic, so without the shading you just end up in the uncanny valley. I say give the thinner lines a shot, the problem you’re seeing is more to do with how your drawing was shaded than the lines themselves.

there is no way to win bros. i think the problem is that i put too much time into the sketch, making it detailed and good looking when i should just be capturing the idea, and save refinement for a separate layer. that's probably the only way to make sure the linework isnt stiff in the end

A trick I like to use is instead of doing your line work on top of the sketch, try to do the final picture to the side of it, using the sketch as a guide but trying to do your final line work in one go with it as reference. It won’t be perfect so it retains some of the sketchy ness, but it will not get that lifeless look all traced linework seems to have. Alternatively, just turn the opacity of the sketch way way down and don’t add so many details, you should think of your final image as something that’s informed by the sketch, not just a simple trace of it.

this could have been mine a couple of years ago.
a couple of thoughts:
the shading on the stairs don't make much sense, also avoid phantom-shading/tangents (her figure breaks the shading on the stairs)
it looks like the fire is the biggest light-source, but there seems to be a bigger light-source outside of the frame - you should keep it simple (pic related)
speaking of the fire, use some occlusion shadows on the big bowl, the underside is way too bright - again the fire has no impact.
foldings look ok
draw her fingernails
nose is too small, either drop the nostrils and make it more anime, or make the enlarge the nose, it doesn't work right now.
what's the deal with the last tiny step? it makes no sense.
you can change the composition simply by cropping image, there's much dead space here.
finally I'd suggest to wrap it up already and move on to the next piece.

a couple of things i think you should consider; obscuring the brazier with the pillar suggests there is still a large distance to the top of the staircase making it appear really large. This also makes the angle of attack for lighting the ground plane of the stairs too sharp(i think). the secondary light at the bottom of the stairs doesn't read particularly well. add more stairs! the height traversed by so few steps makes them seem uncomfortable to use. I really would have preferred a lower horizon line, so you could see the landing above and have had the main light cast on it, thus, from top to bottom, dark -> light -> stairs (alternating light&dark). Trying to keep the general composition though i would try something as attached. We will make it one day nonanon, keep cranking out the art.

Practice hands and feet, just draw a page of them using some reference (e.g. anatomy book from artbook thread / youtube tutorial / pictures from image search / quickposes timed practice) and do that every day. It doesn't matter if they look like shit just keep doing it. Also do gesture + figure drawing in general with croquis cafe and timed pose sites

The composition is also messy, it doesn't seem like there's any rhyme or reason to it. No real focal point. Also the woman being carried is balancing on the dude's biceps with her shins. theres a couple proportion issues. the upper arms are different lengths and the breasts are too high which makes it more noticeable.
The face and hair are very cute.

Tip for coloring if you're interested. Set your lineart layer on multiply to make your lines darker than the rest of your piece. It'll help it pop. And when using the fill tool I believe theres an option that will make it fill an extra few pixels which will help you avoid the little valleys of lighter color around the edges.

Last little thing, dont cut off her left hand. Throws off the composition and i know you can do that hand. hope this helped

I understand mixing western and eastern styles to avoid the virgin basic bitch anime style, but lad. It isnt working out for your style. You have to find another way to draw features. Right now it doesnt look appealing. The left most one looks good. The middle just looks terrible, and it has something to do with the head, hair, face. The right most one is weird because it doesnt look as bad as the middle but it also doesnt look good. When artists mix western and eastern, many cross over to the uncanny valley. I think that's happening right now to your art. You have to find another way to draw their features.

It's one of those pictures where you start to notice more and more errors the longer you look at it. The shading on her nose is big and weird because the light source is all over the place. Hairstyle is too weird. Shoulders uneven. The thigh gap is just drawn badly. Hands as well. The middle head isn't just tilted, I think it's supposed to be slightly raised up as well (or it could just be the image fucking my perception up). Chest should be drawn that way. What is her other hand doing at the back?

and that's only the middle one.

the thing is, I want to improve, but I want to keep a simplistic and flat look to my art, not really going for realism or detail. The eyes, brows and the eyelids are not symmetrical. The left is higher than the right. Always use guidelines to make sure they are balanced. Even if you're drawing animu heads, keep in mind that the skull is like an oblate 3D thing and that the facial features conform to that. With this information, you dont just put the mouth everywhere. Also if you see the center of your mouth, it doesnt align with the center of the face. You really need to start using guidelines for the face. I understand it's animu, but head is too big for the body. You put effort in coloring, but it came out muddy because of the brush you used. Looks like you spammed airbrush.

This, imho those don't look terribly informed by form, and construction-- fun with a pencil and Keys to Drawing will probably get you to that level. Don't think of the exercises in those books as drawing to an end result, rather focus on the process of drawing, and learning to draw. Practice from the books, and then take a short break to just doodle, letting the exercises warm you up and inform your doodling. Practicing form and perspective however, cannot hurt, and will make you more versatile.

Good job trying foreshortening, it adds life to the drawing. If you want to improve, your gesture can be more dynamic. I'd recommend practicing gesture, with the idea of capturing the rhythm foremost-- but also thinking of the relationship between the torso/pelvis, and the overlapping of those two forms, or the stretch and pull of them, and pay close attention to the pose and the alignment of the shoulders and hips, to get the most out of your forms.

Experimenting with a new rendering technique.
I wanted something that was faster to do than a straight up digital painting, like i've been doing in the last few days, and this one is quite fun to do, and even looks kinda cool, in my opinion.
Of course, there's always room for improvement.
A couple of issues with the drawing itself, but i was mostly focused on the rendering style, to be honest, and i didn't bother to fix them.

How long are you going to work on this? first of all, that's a very inconvenient thing to do, pulling the sword that way instead of the other hand. Do you know how long the sword you've drawn is? and she's even holding it like she's just removing a kitchen knife from a knife block. Second, practice dynamic poses so you could do better in your next piece. And you also need to do better faces. Dont develop a oneitis with your work. This is one of those drawings you either really should've dropped already or changed 99%.

Your highly detailed rendering technique looks great on the face and torso, where there is a lot of small volumes, but on smooth areas like the arms and thighs, not so much. The colors shift doesnt make much sense volume wise, and make it hard for the eye to understand what's going on. Maybe put less different colors but in bigger patchs so it doesn't tire the eyes on those areas.

I think it was the fact their whole body was showing vs a cropped zoom as well as bunching together the other characters. Also flipping the canvas helped a lot for some reason.
>the brother could be a little farther
are you talking about the tall guy? and do you mean further to the right of the image? i think you are correct, the top right corner feels weird imo
>supposed to look at the cat or the little one
Not sure either! I will try to fix it both ways and pick one
>eating while walking
they aren't meant to be walking, but it is a weird pose, I drew him like that just because i wanted his hands to be doing something. I agree I should probably come up with something else.

Thanks. Pic related has original line on the left. Right is a rough re-enactment of how I started painting. Not sure why I started painting shapes on the white canvas but I ironically ended up with something that probably thumbnails better than anything else I've done so far, and in much less time.

I don't plan much (this might change). I've recently read stuff like Schmid and Gurney and I'm also trying out the color slider after reading those linran pics. I tried staying low brightness and low saturation, but also gave room for some local color, because I wanted it to look overcast.

>Why are the drawthreads always dead?
I think part of this boards problem is that a lot of people seem to stop posting in threads if they've hit the bump limit. I don't understand why considering this board is pretty slow and that the old threads normally hang around for like a week before being knocked off the catalogue. I don't understand it.

Like your new piece by the way. Have you gotten more comfortable with drawing Irene? I've noticed that in a lot of your older work her shoulder didn't seem to be positioned right. Like, one would be hanging much further out than the other. Like, if you put your fist in between your elbow and your arm. Like it was stretched out too far if that makes sense.

Anyway I haven't gotten that feel from her in a while. So good stuff.
