This looks amazing, great job with the coloring. It’s well done. The eyes are indeed a bit different, but it’s not very much noticeable. So you’re aiming for a sweet and gentle look, I suggest you giving the hair lines, less of a thickness, to give off the vibe of warm ness. ( like for example classical angel paintings, very blurry and bright. I’m a bit confused, is this going to be a full illustration? If it’s just a head shot, try drawing flowers all around her, with about the same pinkish color, or for example like the flowers on the bottom

>>3878413
Thank you so much anon, especially for taking the time to critique and give me advice <3 I think I remember giving her thick line art in her hair because I wanted to practice dynamic lines, plus I thought that it would emphasise the softness of her face, I could’ve made a bad decision though. When I first started drawing this I had just bought a new pack of pencils that I was excited to try out, so I just drew something that was deep in my comfort zone and be able to use the pencils to their full advantage. When it comes to the flowers... haha, I can’t deny I definitely got lazy and just added the least amount of flowers as possible just to make the drawing look complete. Now that you mention them though, I might go back into the drawing and add more to make it look more interesting <3 What you said about the warmth of classical angel paintings though, I will definitely keep in mind for future art. Thank you !

This looks good, however I’m unsure if this is completed or not. This reminds me of the 80s style, so if you’re going for this look, try cell shading in solid shapes. For example this image, everything is smooth and fine. Also are lines are a bit shakey as well, but other than that everything looks good.

>> No.3878439

>>3878422
Tyvm for the kind feedback, I’m definitely interested in seeing more of your art. I really love your shading. You should try doing dynamic lines for stuff like comics, cartoons, cars, mechanical ? . . .etc ( I’m not really an expert in that subject, however I’ll defintely look into it). When using dynamic lines, everything should look thick, or the art that I typically like, is where there are thick lines on the outside of the character/object, while thin or colorful inside.

>> No.3878444

>>3878439
Ahh yes you’re definitely right ! I do want to practice more “boyish” art like comics and mechanical stuff because it looks like so much fun, I think the thing that’s holding me back is my actual lack of knowledge in fundamentals, like I know how to polish stuff to make it look pretty, but when it comes down to basic muscles in limbs, or how strong light sources should act on an object I’m helpless haha. I think you have a strong understanding of forms and shapes, but I think you should work mainly on your lines and faces. Your lines are very wobbly and scratchy, which shows you don't have a lot of confidence and makes it harder to appreciate stuff like the pretty nice forms. You should practice drawing lines with one sweeping stroke, even for sketches.
I think if you're going for anime-style, you might want to emulate your references more closely. This looks kind of western-influenced anime, if that makes sense. I think the facial expression is a bit confusing, I'm not sure if she is supposed to be excited or scared. I think it would help if you exaggerated it some more, and made the lips wrap around the face more so that it looks more 3D.

I think you should pay more attention to the way faces are constructed in animu, and try simplifying the face shapes a little. This witch has a very round cheek, but a very angular chin. I feel like this is a stylization I see more in western cartoons than I do in anime, where the cheek and chin are one, unified shape, with no defined cheekbone. I think the same could go for the shape of the mouth, which has a lot of little details to the shape that don't really add to the expression. I think that it would be stronger and more anime-ish looking if you tried to make it a simpler, more confident shape.

Very nice rendering especially the eyes. I think the hair shouldve been handled with the same softness as the face because the lineart on the hair is distracting. I feel it's taking attention away from the eyes which is a shame because they're nicely done. It's a nitpick though and just a preference in style so take it with a grain of salt. Anyways keep up the good work!

Her left leg is just a bit too long. You can fix that by aligning her left knee to the right knee since the legs are basically going in the same direction. Also if this is digital make one more pass to clean the lineart and it will look better. Otherwise good job.

Your art looks amazing, the lineart, and the expression are gorgeous. However there are a few anatomical errors. In anatomy, the midst of the colar bone is always linear/curve to the lining of the neck and to the midst of the rib. I tried to fix the errors, however I’m unsure if it’s correct( which I’m a learning artist as well). The blue lines are are my relining. The red are errors/fixes. Things I would suggest; have a slight emphasis on the shoulder bone, the ribs, and the hips. I hope this helps.

Theme: you’ve perfected this, he gives me an god vibe
Lewd; the body is nice, and I love his facial expression, however his pose makes little sense. He is lightly touching his chest, while touching himself with a slightly blushing blank expression. When pleasuring yourself, you have more of a facial movement. The hand should be more clench/shakey ( hands are the most expressive part of the body). Think about yourself when you’re doing this ( whether male or female). If he is slightly touching himself, then I apolgize. A great way for a character to have a pose, is to understand the character’s trait/motive/emotion at the time.

How would you say about my critique? Am I being on point or misleading. Tyvm for letting me to critique you, you really do have nice art. Is it fine if I can see your social media?
Oh and another thing is, that I looked at all of your artist that you follow, many of them have incorrect Anatomy. I suggest you, if you do, to reference off of people in real life. Specifically flat chest women/feminine men. Artist that draws women with big breast can get away with anatomy most of the time.

I think this looks very nice overall, but the biggest thing that I think you could improve is to make the shading less gradiated. You have a good range of values, but you have so many midtones that it keeps your lights and darks from really popping, especially on the character. I think he would pop a lot more if you tried to get rid of a lot of the midtones.

Hmm for this your should try making solid shapes to indicate the object. You can do this by drawing the lines first, then using the bucket, or you can use a paintery tool. For the color pallet, you should reference off of real life, that’s the best way to get colors. The best way to make a nice art style is to reference off of other artist, I suggest looking up abstract art. It may fit your style well.

I feel you, I’ve ben Drawing for a while as well. For twos years straight I had the same art style, with little improvement. My heads were huge and the bodies were very small. The poses were stiff as well. I’d actually regressed from the year previously. I was too afraid to look at references and to critique my art. I was also afraid to try new stuff. Even now I still struggle. I too have a really critical eye, and it sometimes stops me from drawing, but you gotta keep pushing. What I learned is, hey what makes other people art attractive. Why don’t people like my art, so comparing yourself to others, and copying them helps as well. I try not to heavily reference, and try to slightly, but doing both can help immensely.

Mood: Neutral, and gender neutral
Theme: I don't know
Realism/stylistic: A little of both I guess
Want to copy other styles or have your own?: I'd like to get something of a blend between a somewhat cartoony style with some realistic shading.

I'm trying to set up something where I can draw/design clothes on a figure for costume design and stuff. It's supposed to be gender neutral, so I can overlay different body parts and stuff to switch gender and stuff on the fly for it.
I've been looking at this too long and I don't know if it's decent or not, so I figured I'd post in this thread. I've tried several times to get a head that looks right but I really can't do heads to save my life. I know you don't necessarily need a head for the clothes, though I'd like to have it in case I need glasses or hairstlyes for the figures.
I've got more experience drawing with pencil and paper (and even 3dCG), but I really wanted to make the move to digital so I could quickly knock out different designs.

Any crits, words of encouragement or help for what it looks like so far? I honestly wish I had a halfway decent head on there, but I can't get it looking right to save my life.

Message conveyance:
A ghost girl at a graveyard (only represented by the cross at the corner, I sacrificed the floor to show her stupidly long dress) is holding a magical heart of energy (it'll be very bright) that controls the undead (in my head). There's a giant skeleton coming out of the woods looking at her and it's an ambiguous, double-way message for depressed teenagers; the skelly is either empty but will finally find love with her, or she took away his heart. Well I first drew it without thinking about it, but both interpretations seem valid to me. Originally I just wanted to draw a giant enemy coming out of the woods while she's classy and ready preparing some magic spell but the energy having a heart shape changed the whole meaning of the scene and I'm fine with it.

Red lines= errors
Blue lines = my outline
Errors:
The shoulders you drew were a little to big, as long with torso.
If he’s sitting in frontal view, his eyes should be nearly symmetrical to each other. For a semi realistic look, the eyes should be a little higher in the face.
The lighting is off, due to the fact that the table is lit? If you look at campfires, you would see that almost all time their faces are fully lit, expect for those who are looking up or a different angle. The only time when the face should be lifted like this, if there’s a single light source, for example as flashlight.
The shapes of the clothing are not as they should be, you should try making more complex shapes.
Suits tend to have dark creases, they’re not light like clothing, they’re more inward/artificial.
The arm movement is uncomfortable,
I’ve tried this myself, and I felt uneased. People who smoke tend to have cigerates near them, or if you want him to have this pose, make him be dropping his cigerate. Oh and draw smoke too.
Don’t be afraid of drawing lips a little darker than they should be, no one has same colored lips.
The background is way too wide, the focus of the picture should be the man.
Also for that nostalgic feeling, you should add a helicopter ( from far away) flying by.
So one thing that I am confused is, is the table lit? Or is it a glass table. If it’s a a glass table, it should not be fully bright, instead it should be reflecting the lights off the skyscrappers and the room light. There his reflection can be shown, a lot table does not have reflection, if so it’s very light.
Also the other anon was correct, the lighting should be similar to each other.
Theme: you did well with this

Thanks for taking the time to critique me and make this thread, it’s been really nice! The table is supposed to be lit/glowing, that’s why there aren’t relflections on a lot of the table. Also the reason for the weird dimensions of the art itself is because I was making a sort of ‘fake screenshot’ like if you were watching something from a tv show, so that’s why I made the composition like that, I probably didn’t do a good job of using values to put more emphasis on the man instead of the background though. Thanks for the anatomy/proportion adjustments, it’s very helpful. I agree with the comments about the pose and clothing folds, gotta practice that lol. I’m not sure about what you mean by the nostalgic feeling though, I didn’t mention anything about that, it may have been another anon. Thank you once again for doing all this ! >> No.3880527

>>3880032
This looks very heavily referenced, which isn't a bad thing. I like the colors, they look very cute and fun. You seem to have the basic anatomy and proportions down. However, I feel like the biggest thing you're lacking in is a proper understanding of form. The super-soft shading reflects a lack of knowledge of detailed muscle forms. as it muddles all the forms of the body. I'd suggest doing the shading with a harder brush to force yourself to think more critically about the forms of the body, some areas like the torso are very vaguely rendered.
The lineart also reflects a lack of detailed understanding of form. It can be helpful to do soume rough lineart with lineweight even when you are doing something more painterly like this, because it will force you to think harder about more detailed forms. I suggest sketching in some of the anatomical details, so you have a better guideline for your shading.

Huh, it's kind of surreal to come into a thread and see people talking about me. Anyway, I haven't been chased off yet. I'm glad that one anon likes my gun witch concept.

To contribute to the thread, here's a sketch I'm working on now. It's Lilith from the Darkstalkers series as a stage magician. Mainly looking for composition feedback right now.

I'd like to get back into drawing in general, but I'm in a place where I don't know where to start. I've had a few drawing classes and I know what I'm doing when it comes to doing still life drawing and that sort of thing, but doing it on the computer isn't quite the same. It's like I'm in a different headspace or something.

Means you're gonna make it anon. Hope you don't mind I took your concept.

You're still at the sketch phase so I think you should try and push that pose more, it looks stiff at the moment. Maybe puff out her chest or have her hips at more of an angle? Another idea if you're down for it is draw her as though you're seeing her from below, like she's on stage and the viewer is in the crowd.

Anyways here's my gun witch with cleaner lines.

Theme: this image does resembles that of a dark themed, However a message conveyance of hope cannot be mixed in with that, unless, she is lit, while there is darkness around her.
The coloring is nicely done, however the shading on the face, should be a little more mixed. For more of the artist style that you follow, try having her eyebrows a bit higher. Her chin is a little pointy, try drawing a more of a curve of a natural jaw line.
The armor looks great, however the lighting is a little off. On plate armor, the light tends to slide, in the area of direction of the ray. So i drew some black strobes, to represent how the light should be. The shape of the plate, heavily influence the reflection of light.
Minor errors: The hair should have some lighting on it as well
the eyes are a bit not symmetrical
the sword handle is a little uneven
and the wind should cause her hair to be blowing on her face.

You have a cute style and alright colors, but they're weighed down by a very fundamental lack of understanding 3D forms.
Spend some time really studying how 3D forms work and how to apply them to the human body. Loomis would unironically be good for you, but I personally prefer Hampton myself for studying this stuff.

I took the Photoshop Black and White Layer Adjustment and brought the blue's tone down so it looks more like night and less washed out. I also put that adjustment layer on linear burn and turned down the opacity. You can do this in clip studio paint by going into color balance and messing with the settings (although with a more saturated result).
I then took an exposure adjustment layer and used it to pump up some of the edges. and lead the eye across the image. You can do this with any sort of dodge layer too.
There's some better things that can be done like ticking up the blue's saturation and whatever.
Just keep in mind that the darkest color you've used is #131236 which isn't really that dark, so the whole piece looks a little washed out.
Post processing is something that can turn even your worst art into something at least presentable, so it's good to have a program on hand that can do these kinds of things.

You need to work on your lineart and folds, and general anatomy and form. Your folds are placed without any purpose, making the guy's clothes look like they're made of tissue paper.
Parts like the shoes make it clear you don't have a strong grasp of form, you should use a reference for detailed and complex objects like those until you have a solid understanding of them.
The hatching is very sloppy, and often seems to be placed without reason. It only exacerbates the problems of poor form stated earlier. The rough, lump lines make it hard to envision the 3D shape these plush dolls are taking on.
tl;dr, keep grinding those fundies and don't be afriad to use reference.

>> No.3884651

Kinda harsh, but the critique was welcome. I see some faults like you said, especially the tissue paper problem I already noticed. I didnt use any reference cause I was training without it. The little worm/snake demons dont really have a form so I wasnt really worried about it.

Pose and composition should be something that's ironed out as early as possible. Don't render anything until all major problems are solved. Ideally you'd plan out what you want to depict then create many thumbnails to iron out pose, camera angle, composition, etc.

Here's how I'd change it while minimizing what needs to be repainted. I expanded the canvas for some breathing room, tweaked the head and shoulders to imply a lower eye level, pulled the sword arm up and inward, trimmed the sleeve a bit, added some wind movement to the hair and reduced that on the flowing fabric a bit. I painted a slight value gradient to the background for variety.

Well, I'm guessing, the reverse grip kind of signifies it's meant to be an assassin character (although yes, not really practical) and the scabbard seems way too small for a katana. My other guess would be a wakizashi which is relatively straight and are tradionally made with a square guard.

maybe bring the whole arm up so the hand is in line with the face and angle the forearm more towards the torso, this should create a more interesting silhouette you could also straighten out the arm and bring it in front of the body (almost like a ballet pose) which would keep the silhouette more dainty. :)

honestly not bad, i would just suggest defining the forms more, try sketching out the picture as cleaner line art underneath, and then when you go in to paint you have lines to paint within, making it cleaner and uniform. ALso try practicing a bit more value contast with the light and dark sides of things

Want to copy other styles or have your own?: desperately want my own style but i can never seem to do anything but study realism or copy other people's styles
sort of tried to get a more stylized face (i was studying a friend's pose, this isn't supposed to be a polished piece or anything)

i would love advice if anyone has some tasty nuggets of wisdom (^:

I tend to just do study after study after study using human references until my hand hurts or my eyes can't see straight anymore

It also helps to study individual body parts themselves (for example, legs, arms, torsos)

Try having a ref in the same doc as your study and frequently flip the canvas horizontally to help you see where the disparities lie
