To hold the rights on a design you only need to have the proof that you made it first. It's as simple as that.
A bit of a tengent but it's also good to know, but according to the rules, all fan art is completely illegal, by the way. Most companies just don't bother taking down everything out there.

It actually isn’t. At all. First of all, copyright infringement isn’t a crime in any sense, it’s a civil dispute. The act of infringing is not in itself illegal, it just gives grounds to the owners to protect right to control the ip (or to law firms to sue you on their behalf if they think they can get loads of money out of it).

I mean I know a good company who cares about leaving a good impression in Media would contact the kid and send her money or ask for her Fortnite account and make it full of gifts including that skin for free.

Well I just saw this on her fb page, she's just a kid but it got enough reach already with that Twitter account and now a Forbes dude directly asking Epic Games. I just hope they have a nice gesture, not necessarily out of legal obligation but to be nice people.

I'd recommend uploading everything to a facebook account the day you make it, you can create a dummy one if necessary with no friends, just for you. In the unlikely event one day a big company copies your idea from 4chan or some other site, you can protect yourself by showing an earlier upload date.

Untrained art can have nice touches of creativity. I don't like the design in the OP though.

Derivative rights are a part of copyright governing transformative works not falling under fair use. You should know this anon. Everyone should.
