Hello ! This is the anon that always draws traditional front facing pretty girls with mostly dead expressions and some detailed clothing. I’m the one that worked on the short hair armour girl.

I’ve decided to work on my weaknesses so I attempted to draw some kind of wise, strong sage character. I did a couple of quick anatomy studies (though not nearly enough to have significant improvement) and tried to come up with an idea for a character I don’t normally do, this is still some generic stuff but it’s a starting point. Criticisms are welcome

I can see that, the first thing I though of when looking at your pic was that somebody took an old man head and put it on a twink. I know the skin on the body doesnt get as wrinkly as the skin on the face, but it still wrinkles. you have none of that

when drawing pretty you usually have to make your stuff look soft and hide a lot of the underlaying elements. when drawing something strong/ old you have to show as much elements which make up the subject

a problem with those who usually draw cute and try to draw something less so, is they dont show enough elements, making it seam uncanny. a problem with those who usually draw strong/ old stuff and try to draw something cute, is they draw too many elements, making it seam less so

It's great that you are exploring different things.
I suggest you try to add some contrapposto in the pose. Try to avoid having the
hips and the torso sharing the same axis (as if you could join them with straight lines) a little sideways twist and a little curve to offset the position, even very slight, can make the pose look more natural. Your gesture line in this case is perfectly straight. Same thing with the head, it shouldn't be perfectly aligned with the chest.
A thing I like to do is to place the axis of the hips, chest and head like they're fanning out, so that it looks like there's some torsion going on and it's JoJo as fuck. Looks up figura serpentinata. Bridgman explains this very well. Even if you want to make an intentionally rigid figure, like I would in this case, you should still add some slight variation in the axes, but maybe try to add some vertical offset instead of sideways torsion.
Facial anatomy needs some work, the cheeks look puffy rather than emaciated. I would use Morihei Ueshiba as reference, he's the founder of Aikido and pretty much the embodiment of the trope. For old men faces you need solid knowledge of the skull since the bones are more visible, but you can treat wrinkles a little bit like drapery over the bones and you're really good at that.
That's all I can think of, hope it helps.

Hello, I am here with a drawing of a Tower Girl I'm actually doing and was wanting some pointers on how to make this drawing better looking before I go at it with pen and copics. My style is typically cartoony/anime-ish, so often times things aren't 100% proportionate to each other, but they still come out okay. My biggest issue right now is the hands, mainly the one stretched down and flipping slightly upward. I'm not sure if some of the fingers should be covered by the rest of the hand or not. There's also the issue of the bottom of the palm and if it should be a bit more rounded or not. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the rest of it, but if theres anything else, I'd like to know.

Thank you so much anon ! I completely agree and this helped a lot, saved it for future reference. Normally I try to misalign the hips and shoulders to make the characters look curvaceous and feminine, but didn’t think this would look right on an old man haha. But, I do see now that the pose looked unnatural and I should’ve made it more fluid. Again, thank you.

I really like the colour palette and texture! Something I’d change is maybe the values, if you change the saturation to 0 you can see there’s not a lot of contrast, especially between the foreground and background. I’d suggest either making the background lighter or the figure in the front a bit darker. The composition could also be improved, maybe look at the rule of thirds to help, otherwise it looks pretty good! :)

Anyway, I just want to say that I think the piece has something really special going on. I mean, the character and rich atmosphere you managed to get across despite all the shortcomings and, like other anons said, with such confidence, are really something. You pretty much got the colors down too.

But there are some absolutely essential elements you're still sorely lacking. The main fundamental you don't quite have a grasp of yet is not anatomy, but perspective - the way you portray three-dimensional shapes. See pic related for a quick example. Take some time out and add a horizon line to your preliminary drawings. Read some books on the subject, like "Perspective Made Easy" for example, and learn how to construct shapes in 1, 2 and 3 point perspectives. Sometimes just take a ruler and practice drawing cubes and spheres. Once you're capable of handling shapes in 3D space, only then can you move on to Loomis, proportions, anatomy, gesture, rendering and so on.

animu is symbol drawing on steroids, but the usual goal for girl drawings is to make them cute/feminine/whatever. The symbols then serve that purpose, so if you're going to mix realism with it, you can't just go nuts with the realism aspect. You need to decide which parts you're going to put effort in making it look realistic. Anything that will make the drawing non-appealing/not cute/non-feminine, you either have to find another way to render/draw or you go back to doing the usual symbol in animu. So basically it's like being mindful and selective, and this is really where your taste, feel, knowledge, and years of animu media influence comes in. Your drawing is good, but I would never think you're going for animu + realism. I'd just think you're going for something western. What's giving it away? face shape, cheekbones, eyeball, etc. Even the rendering of skin just screams western artist.

what do you think of this? it's supposed to be like one of those old timey pictures with the whalers just kind of sitting nonchalantly by their huge, gory catch except, you know, with a dragon and a scotch dwarf because that's the kinda genre I like to draw. the final will be more bloody.

i dont like how it is hanging from a tree. you could have made a more dynamic pose. check the proportions of the characters, the sitting dwarfs left leg looks quite short for example

I'm not a master at composition but I tried to tweak it a bit. The main thing you want to remember is that as things recede into the background they get lighter in value. You kind of did that with the grass but I pushed it more. Also you shouldn't make the sky a 100% pure white value, save that for where the focus of the image is. There weren't really any background elements so I just tried to loosely indicate some mountains and I also shrunk the kid because I felt like he was too big. I also tried to indicate some sort of strong lighting to bring more interest/ add more mood to it. Quick and dirty edit but hope it helps.

Looks unfinished. Values need to be pushed. Colors in the face are too prominent and splotchy. Get refs for the skull and the environment.

If the character is a mage of some sort, why is she wearing plate armor? What's coming from the skull's mouth? Looks like it could be a spiderweb, a soul, semen, all of the above? Whatever it is make that clear.

Doing a Rembrandt study in oils Id say I’m half way, switching from digital as my grandma accidentally broke my intuos pen, thought it was bad luck but traditional is far more interesting to work with, it’s s whole new beast. Kinda glad it broke as it got me away from the screen all day.

Based off what I can see, I'm assuming you meant Kaneko's style rather than Soejima's, right?

The ironic thing is that Kaneko's style approaches realism in terms of how he proportions and structures the face much more than many modern anime styles. I ape his style for some of my personal work, so I did a quick paint-over based on his Persona 2 work to show what I mean. Generally his eyes are proportionately smaller and more almond-shaped than how you drew yours. He also depicts pretty clear planes of the face, especially the nasal bridge, upper eyelid, and the side-plane of the head. And while it is less realistic, his mouths almost always have a very clear heart shape.
