**If you make good copies of anime *properly*, you will be able to draw good anime. If you make bad copies of anime or bad anime styled drawings from photos, you will get better at drawing bad anime. Please think carefully about how you are studying.**

This is the thread for:

1. Posting your anime studies:
>Copy exactly but don’t do it aimlessly. Integrate drawing concepts (construction, color theory, tracing, etc.) into your studies in order to pull information from the reference (anime art, figurines, tutorials) that you can later use for your original work.
>Do a single study multiple times to ensure you address all of your mistakes and memorize the correct process in your head. Attempt drawing it from memory as well.
>You will only be able to effectively deviate from your reference after doing exact copy studies accurately and consistently.
2. General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

How long would it take me to go from beginner to this in the space of a year? I need to get good enough quickly, but I don't need to be a master of art. I don't want to learn male anatomy, or how to draw from life or anything like that. I just want to draw cute anime girls.

That's more of a personal advice but don't feel forced to study in depth if it sucks the joy out of drawing for you. Books are tools and should be used as such.

Hey, anon!
There are a bunch of ways to do lineart. But the most simple method is creating a new layer above all your sketch layer(s). Then you lower the opacity of your sketch layer until it's faded, and you draw over the lines on the lineart layer. Hopefully the quick pic attached will help. See you, around!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.
If you want smooth, crisp lines, you'll probably need to use a stabilizer on a pretty high value, and then over time, you can lower it as you get used to the feel of drawing digitally. Stabilizers feel "laggy" at first. Find a setting your comfortable with and adjust over time.

Forgot something else as well lol. You need to draw on an extremely large canvas (something in the 4500+ pixel range ) to get quality lines. Then you downscale the finished project to something in the 1280 x 800 range. Attached is an example of a big canvas.

I gotta try again with the grayscale stuff. This guy paints with grays then slaps colors last. I never could do it, though. The colors come out unsaturated and when I try to up the colors, the values get lost. It's frustrating. I'm getting tired of linearting so I've just been painting the areas I dont want to spend effort in like hair and hands, but mine is not this level.

I use the standard CSP g pen with these settings. Use a hard eraser to erase out mistakes (when 2 lines connect there's always a weird mess) and for lineweight i make a new layer and do it manually, with the same 8 pixel g pen.

I'm guilty of not following the blue lines I did. It's for helping me place the eyes but most of the time I try to move them around unti it looks right. If I still can't get the proper placement, I'll add more construction lines or start over. Like what >>3868335 said, this takes time.

Also, loomis helps with the basic head construction but studying the reilly abstraction helped me with the overall placement of the face. I feel loomis is too vague for eye/nose/mouth placement. Don't hesitate to try other head/face construction other than loomis

While I entirely agree that the "fundies or die/grind figures 20hrs a day" mentality is bad, having at least some understanding of construction, perspective and anatomy goes a long way. Which is why putting at least a couple artbooks under your belt would be good for anyone, really.

Proportions are wonky af. Try to do more gesture drawing, with an idea of getting a better feel for the form and proportions of the figure. Also lacks perspective, so do some perspective exercises-- a bit of practice in those areas, and you'll be pretty solid in your foundations for drawing anime.
>>3875575
Very nice! A very easy perspective to draw, but the linework is very nice through the torso. Cute butt too. The shading adds a nice layer of dimension, like the choice of a hot and cold color for obvious reasons. Those sketches in the background however, suggest you can use the same advice I gave to the other anon. Keep up the good work!

Felt bad for not giving you criticism, so here I go: the hair lacks form, it's pretty wonky-- since the rest of the figure has such great feeling of dimension and weight, for the hair to just kind of be there like that draws the eye, and is so far the worst part imho. Hiding the right hand is also cowardly, unless she's supposed to be flicking the bean, which is great, but that hand feels off-- either it's too far down, in which case the angle feels off compared to the pubic area and torso, or you need to pull it up a bit so we start to see first knuckle. Otherwise loving it so far, and hope you do another perspective of the same pose for practice, and to show off more of what's going on with that right hand-- if you catch my drift.

You seem to drop drawings a lot, do you ever try to fix them, or ever return to them? Seems like a bad practice imho, restatements are good for learning, and a rule like "dropping when there's a single mistake," seems like it would be bad both for learning, but also for putting out finished work, and thus for business.

I loled. But anyway, even if i figured out what the fuck is going on with the legs and the left hand, i feel like the composition/idea is not worth it. I know what you mean by revisiting stuff, i do go back and fix mistakes, but i think this piece is gonna end up boring.
>You seem to drop drawings a lot
You're right, i'm working on that. Just out of curiosity, does that happen to you? I mean when you have an idea and after 2 hours commited to a piece it suddenly looks so dumb and you can't stand looking at it
At least i like the character, i'm gonna call her Ivy and do more of her later. I just need to start planning the compositions better next time i commit to a piece

I guarantee you, even if it feels like polishing turds, if you were to render that one, it would surely... sell!
>I mean when you have an idea and after 2 hours commited to a piece it suddenly looks so dumb and you can't stand looking at it
That's why I haven't committed 2 hours to drawing anything-- i'm the "owner of hundreds of figure sketches, not a finished one in sight" kind of guy-- so you're already miles ahead of me. I'm trying now to just get back into the swing of drawing, and then to actually start finishing stuff. I've only practiced pen to paper style, so I get the part where it looks dumb, and then I just move on-- but if I used digital, I would work and rework it until I liked it for sure. Or if I was posting it to social media, I would polish it enough for general consumption. Gotta remember, the viewing public aren't nearly as picky or hard on us as we are on ourselves.

Dude you got plenty of good material there, polish those and render them, post them and people will notice-- especially if you're frequent and consistent. Those are good enough to be consumed and poplar!

On the namajake anatomy stuff? Idk, never read it-- don't even know if it's in English, I'm just reposting the images I found a while back here. I doubt you'd find it useful, you're pretty good already, but you could certainly copy them and perhaps play around with them a bit-- would probably be fun.

3882766

>>3882748
Actually, on closer inspection, namajake anatomy could be useful to you-- you draw a lot of relatively simple poses from simple perspectives, maybe if you try occluding the form, and forcing perspective, you'll make the poses more interesting, and perhaps challenging? That's currently what I'm trying to do to-- draw dynamic poses, and occlude the forms of the pelvis and torso and arms &etc.

On art the fundies are but a cycle, you learn something, you apply it and keep revisiting the fundies. Copying is an excellent way to keep practicing while you cycle and recycle your fundies.

To keep just studying fundies is why most people will never ever git gud at art, they don't practice and they don't have fun.
