The face is still woefully flat but atleast it's clear he's studied other art a lot. He's obviously developed far, but he would do well to start thinking into the realm of the third dimension (even when doing anime) If there wasn't hard shadows and line weight variance this would look incredibly flat by the line composition. Not to say that it's necessarily bad to exercise a style, such as depth by shading or something like that, I just think it's compositionally boring to make an otherwise flat image attain depth exclusively by shading. It's the same as forcing depth by blurring, when there is so much more to the process and reality of perception.

I had an incredible day of it yesterday it was just electric here really. I rectified a coat of paint on one I'm working on and it came out great. Really good brushstrokes, very happy. Then onto an old portrait that's been going for at least a year, it all came really. It's brilliant. You know? I was dancing around, nearly lost it in places but brought it back I was so happy. One one hand, you can't beat some of these brush strokes it's like it came from Minoan Crete. I'm not totally happy with the features, but it is becoming a bit of a tired painting for me so I'll take what I was given and be very happy with it. £80 thick black wood frame with gold edging, lovely.

That's it innit? Onto the next one. Booyah.

Here's a guide that really improved my coloring: https://imgur.com/a/Cry9xcd

Some main things to keep in mind is to make sure you have a good balance of less saturated parts and more saturated parts where you want the focus to be, as well as where light is hitting. Additionally if I see that the drawing is too desaturated overall, I'll use a saturation layer on top of all the layers.

How I do it now is to use multiply layers as a way to add value, but instead of using varying degrees of grays, I now use color. This helps by not having to rely on an overlay layer to manage all the saturation, though it might be easier to start with grayscale multiply layers and move to something similar when you're accustomed to it. Also like others have mentioned, James Gurney's Color and Light is very helpful for understanding color relations.

That explanation was probably worded like shit, but I hope it can help a least a little.

You actually regressed. I am not saying that to be mean, I promise. Your 2019 picture has more detail in it but the detail is in unnecessary places. The folds in the shawl/scarf are misplaced, the lines in the hair are misplaced and look like you are just guessing where as your older image portrays the hair in a solid, more believable mass.

Personal opinion too but your earlier style is also a bit more distinctive - kinda reminds me of Jamie Hewlitt meets Dead Leaves. It's very appealing and succeeds capturing that type of stylization. Your newer thing looks like someone trying and failing to imitate a shojo look. The new way you stylize noses and mouths is not visually interesting.

Depends on what style you want. What do you want your own shading to look like? There are some artists who like their shading to be more on the realistic side, like Range Murata's clothing, Shinkiro's everything (pic related). There are some artists who go ham on their rendering, like Kawacy. Some just likes it simple, they just mix soft shading with cell shading. Figure out what your type is, study artists who specialize in that and practice according to your needs. I'm moving towards more realistic rendering so I'm examining relevant artists + practicing with real life references + reading books about it. You gotta have something you want, right?

yeah bro just draw lol, draw whenever, bro, get back on that hamster wheel cashier job everyday and never push yourself. You need pressure to do great things, harsh fact of life, wanna make cool art, music or be good at something? work hard everyday, blood sweat and tears, otherwise be mediocre after 10 years. I'm not going to be another one of those guys at 30 with no skill, ability, in a dead end job they hate wishing they did more in their 20s, instead I'm going to work my ass off and feel some pain like everyone else that's made it. For whatever reasons, success rate goes down as you get older, at about 50 you don't have the mental capacity to be a pro league player, or become a pro anything, you really don't have the rest of your life to do anything. You only have one youth, then you can never do those things anymore, never go out clubbing with your friends, never have a highschool crush, never have a first love, hang out at parties, time moves on, you get older, less things are a open to you. You might think you're alive for 80-100 years on this earth and you keep putting off that thing you want to accomplish because you got the rest of your life, half that time will be in a wheel chair getting your kids to help you with new technology. I'd rather get somewhere, than to sit around in my 20s smoke pot, drink, video games, and play guitar here, there, and never get anywhere like my 30 y/o brother did.

pic related is a self-portrait redraw, i did the original one in like 2012 and the new one is from june 2018. i pretty much stopped working on it because i don't want to figure out how the colors would work.

Love your stuff my man.

First time seeing that 2013 character. Got any more?

Funny enough but I think I prefer the Irene here compared to the rendition in your comic panel. Maybe just the style? In saying that though the other one does look more 'professional' I guess, if that makes sense?

I prefer the current landscape to your old one but for the characters it's kind of hard to compare a human to a non human.

Not that you posted it here but your demongirl is always ace.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot man.
>First time seeing that 2013 character. Got any more?
That character is probably the first character I made, she was the MC of my first webcomic, then I used a younger version of her as a secondary character for another webcomic. When I made Irene she looked like pic related then I mixed something of this character's design into her. But I have been looking at old sketches and there is something I like about the old Irene.

>Funny enough but I think I prefer the Irene here compared to the rendition in your comic panel. Maybe just the style?
The one is the pic is traditional (minus the lettering), the comic is digital. I'm awful at digital but I used CSP in the comic instance to use tons of radial rulers. I can do that with a French curve and a thumbtack but it's absurdly time consuming.

>your demongirl is always ace.
I'm making kinbaku (Japanese bondage) things with her now, I posted one in the drawthread. This shibari thing is a rabbit hole and the work done by the masters is amazing, I can't get enough.

You should eventually get to the point where you only need a visual reminder of your subject - your own knowledge of anatomy will carry you the rest of the way.

It's a similiar feeling to determing what's grammatically correct in a given sentence.
"We /waz/ kingz" v "We /were/ kings"

One just sounds better and as such, certain things in art just feel and look better.

It really seems like your art has been consistently more focused on maintaining a certain style over everything else. I think it would be really beneficial to try and restart from zero, and really spend some time learning the fundamentals and learning how more realistic faces/bodies work. I'm not the type who believes learning realism automatically teaches you how to stylize, but I feel your recent stagnation is due to a lack of knowledge on how the real human form works.

I used to draw everything when I was a kid then I got stuck in a loop with DragonBall. In a way I see why you shouldn't just draw DragonBall. At the same time it's better than nothing and if I wasnt drawing that I wouldn't have been drawing at all. Then I stopped that for a while and was drawing cars and 3d modeling nonstop for a while. And then this year I tried to draw a DragonBall character again. The drawing is still quite stiff but I'm way better at digital painting.

~The mark making wasn't ideal. As a whole thing I'm buoyant about it, I now what I want, I'm interested in some ideas from some other artists, it's got a good chance. Probably it needs to dry up completely , possibly , so that the brush has some resistance from the surface. It's a good idea and I do want it to exist. It brings to mind yet another artist. I'm looking at an older work and I'm not happy with it, I think the colours are off.I need some new paint, a fresh golden ochre and Indian red.

your construction of the tuba (euphonium?) is pretty poor. the bell is misshapen and the body of the instrument is way too thicc, and the tubing is pretty wibbly and looks flat. it's also too small compared to her, making the bell look too big. your rendering on it is poor as well, but the colors are way warmer. like the other anons said, the pose is way less dynamic and interesting. I prefer the left one, even if it is less technically skilled. your anatomy and coloring technique improved but there is so much less charm and character.

sorry to harp on the tuba but it physically pains me to see poor drawn musical instruments.

ah yeah, I had compiled those pictures before I posted in this thread, it was mostly meant to showcase the evolution of the character design I was drawing but I figured it would work for displaying art improvement as well, I probably should have made another for this thread showcasing more anatomy than just the faces, but I do make sure to practice! I'd like to draw more facial expressions and more varied positions and perspectives, I just haven't realized how boring my compositions tend to be until recently, lmao. But thanks for the input!

Don't listen to these crabs, anon. The pose is stiff, but you're working in the direction you wish to see your art take, so don't get too down on it. Just keep working on it! Practice gesture, and form exercises, and keep drawing! It won't take too much longer now before your drawings are full of life and dimension, just so long as you continue drawing towards what you wish to see in your art.

2019 is clearly better drawn but you should try to go back to the elements of the first drawing. I like the 2016 face much better and the inside of the tuba (or whatever that is) is more interesting to look at. Second drawing is more precise but in a way that looks like you pasted a photo of a tuba on the drawing, it's jarring.

no offense to anyone but this thread is really depressing

the average progress is very minimal
the ones who are really good also were really good before

I wanted to believe that learning art is many ways similar to other learning, and simply putting enough work will make you good unless you are a brainlet who has difficulties in general learning.

as you know it's tough and there aren't silver bullets. not sure what you've studied but if you don't do any gesture drawing you should. vilppu, huston, and bridgman are my favorites and you can get books from the book thread. try to download some watts or vilppu videos if you can but there's some good bits on youtube. steve huston's book "making ever mark count" is good because it emphasizes gesture, then construction, then gesture, and more construction and so on. inevitably you lose the gesture as you construct over it, it's always important to keep it in mind as you iterate.

https://www.youtube.com/user/KarlGnassStudios/videos
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA9o111IH1VD8Kxz0YLn8_A - the beginner gesture drawing and figuary videos
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=vilppu+figure+drawing anything with vilppu or huston on this page

"we never copy the model, we analyze the model" - glenn. eventually you learn to keep in proportion and exaggerate the body while still being believable. stick with boxes, cylinders, and spheres as it's easier to push those in space, use your imagination, and model lighting. later you can add anatomy over it. start with the main masses the torso and pelvis, add legs, and then put in all the rest. i find karl gnass' methods really helpful as i used to get too stuck in detail early on when i should be focusing on the "spirit" of the drawing
