For a guy that tries to be chipper and positive all the time, this guy is stingy as hell with art knowledge.

His gumroad tutorials are literal "draw the rest of the fucking owl" tier and he still has the nerve to charge $20 dollars each.

His youtube tutorials are just "use wamr and cold colors" and then "render"

What a scam/waste of time.

Popular artists are stingy as hell with knowledge even if you pay them. Luckily cgpeers exists.

What I take issue with is you not being able to tell the difference in educational content between MDJ's tutorials and other randoms on youtuube, and then calling all of it worthless because it has been taught before. That is insane, he's giving knowledge to people who wouldn't have necessarily gotten it otherwise, at a tiny fraction of the cost of the original course or for free. His demos are also great and he knows the material inside and out, it counts for something when you can demonstrate what you're teaching, because it sets a good example for the students to follow. Well it does take "work" still. But half the issue is resolved with just ripping the outline. The hardest part is pacing your content...but if you just copy someone else pacing, rewrite the script in your words and record it then you get it done faster.

I think a lot of frustration people have with Ross comes down to his disingenuous attitude he has towards his skillsets to the point of insulting levels of oversimplification. He always starts his videos with a completed sketch, his coloring is usually very basic, and he relies heavily on interspersed jokes to keep his videos lively at the expense of educational content. Perhaps the worst offender of this is his use of color dodge: on the surface, it's a very useful tool, but he literally uses it as if it's a magic wand by having sparkles and magician sound effects go off when he uses it. It's not a mysterious tool if you just read how the damn layer functions, yet Ross wants the mystery because it allows him to be more entertaining. I find his work technically exceptional, but he draws really boring subjects, mostly sameface Disney women. It's unfortunate that he doesn't share or articulate his process further. In all honesty, I don't think that it's his responsibility to share the knowledge he has, but I feel it's not that he doesn't want to. Like with a lot of self-taught artists, I don't think the problem is that he doesn't want to share his knowledge - he just doesn't have the first idea how to put his knowledge into words. At least, not without making jokes in front of a poorly positioned shoulder cam.

I think unless you're insanely disciplined you can only get so far with self teaching anyway. Ross put in his hours for sure but he also had mentors, went to an artcenter and was constantly around other artists who he admitted were even better than him. He might explain things in an oversimplified way but at his level there's a lot of nuance in there that only comes with experience.

Withholding information is rule #1 in the workshop guru's manual. These people do it because they know exactly what they're doing. If you spill all the knowledge you have on a subject, you will run out of videos. If you say very, very little and keep things entertaining enough to keep people coming back for more you can make 10 videos / books / whatever instead of one.

Yes, and I have. With pirating for art stuff/books, and music.

So you think the statement: "Not everything in X medium = bad" means that everything has to be positive? What kind of retarded logic is that?

If you were to tell me that all mystery novels are garbage, I'd think you're either an idiot, you just don't like the genre at all (why post then?), or the third option is that you're trying to seem smart by totally discrediting a bunch of people more talented than yourself. This is hipster behavior in which they make classifications for things that are bad, and are prideful of their "taste" because they can't actually create anything of value themselves. This board, collectively, is the third option.

>keep up to date.
What kind of stuff has caught you out as something you did that was outdated? Do you mean more of techniques or styles?

I peruse some tuts occasionally for the same reasons but find less and less reason to unless it's an artist that does truly unique things.

He just seems to be role-playing his own idea of how a happy behaves, while actually being completely emotionless. Although maybe it's just shitty acting for his videos, maybe he's different in real life.

I was following this guy since day 1 on youtube watching him grow. Eventually he started making 6 figs through his efforts. But in the beginning he was a full autismo who spoke like a robot and looked like he was about to cry in front of the camera. Now he's "confident" because why the hell not you're rich now but I bet he takes a lot of hits before presenting himself to upkeep his happy attitude.

It could be the same for rossman or he really has brainwashed himself to be happy all the time--another skill.

Never really followed any YouTube personality so I'm not sure how extreme Ross is compared to others, but yeah he probably knows that this type of personality gets views (not sure why it works). I'm still pretty sure he's a serial killer, remember where you heard it first when the bodies start showing up.

The problem with all tutorials is that the painting and rendering isn't hard. It's the conception process and drawing that's the hard part. Yet they constantly sell based on idiots only thinking about the end result.

I barely care about this kid, but I bet you just suck and refuse to listen to what he says and not him being stingy with his teaching. I bet if you posted one of his tutorials it would be alright. He's probably not a brilliant teacher, but it's probably somewhat useful if you at least know your damn fundies.

I think so, but decide for yourself.

I think there's one of this gumroads on cgpeers, see if you benefit from it, if you do, consider his patreon.

I mean, I hate buying shit that doesn't benefit me at all, so see if you think it's worth it.
