Tips on how to capture a likeness? Even when I nail the structure and proportions of the face the likeness of the person just seems off. Pic by Nathan Fowkes

the thing with likeness is measuring
constantly compare drawing with ref face
flip them around/ check thumbnail etc etc

You likely are not "nailing" the structure and proportions then. Post your work, and we'll be able to tell what you are doing wrong.

its about noticing the minute details of the specific face. you have the loomis proportions as a general guideline but the reality is everyone has really specific distinction features that makes you look different from everyone else. things like space between eyebrows, eyes set under a brow ridge, not under a brow ridge, downward facing eyebrows, upward pointed eyebrows, curved eyebrows, lots of space between lips and bottom of nose, not a lot of space, wide lips, narrow lips, big 'M' on the upper lips, almost no 'M' on the upper lip, flared nostils, skinny nostrils, pinched nostriles, etc.

measuring helps a lot when you first start

Look into sight size and comparative measuring

this has to be wrong because caricatures are all about likeness but the measures are always warped.

Proportions are warped in caricatures.

I hate Nathan Fowkes and his effortlessness
In his videos he just humblebrags while making masterpieces in 2 seconds
Fuck you Nathan, FUCK YOU REEEE

I was thinking this. A caricaturist can distill the essence of their features and make it it look like them, despite the distortions. Most of us can't get a likeness despite making a correct sized face/head to start with.

and to continue on from this, how little info is there about this? either it's very hard and virtually no-one knows, and/or a closely guarded secret. It can't just be measurements. Many sight size painters make great copies of casts, but mediocre paintings of actual humans.

Well, good luck with finding closely guarded secrets then.
