I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want to achieve much greater volume, but have no idea how to. Alongside anatomy.

Are there master artists or anon's here that solely focus upon grey-scale work that has insane amount of form/volume/depth for the 3d I can study from?

How do I learn to improve on this?

Ok, that helps OP. When comparing yours to them I can see that you are aiming for a much more detailed range of values to make it more realistic. Your isn't nearly as bad as you might think.

The mlp picture uses a stronger value range which both provides a greater contrast between light and shadow areas. Which i n turn allows more mid tones to be used to have those subtly reflected light areas help conveying the shape. The mlp also uses some patterns especially on the cloth and the fur make sure the surface looks rugged and not a flat "glassy" surface. Yours also has that in places but it is not very visible.

You're a degenerate. There's no possibility of what you're doing to be ever considered art, it's just sexual fetishism.

But if you must know, it's the fucking values and edgework. Don't just paint over everything in white, light does not work that way, each material responds differently. Everything is grey and weird, some things washed out white, and no real shadows.
Why would you blur the tail? It's not a photo. The tail itself is flat and not a 3d shape. You're cutting corners and just piling on effects. This applies to the rest of the construction.

>>3857897
>>3857915
What this artist does is that he puts a lot more detail into the rendering of the individual shapes while still having a good experience on value and how the shadowy values convey the illusion of shapes. This obviously takes a lot of of work and practice besides understanding the lights that illuminate he figure. This artists also uses a more solid brush instead of a an airbushy effect so his hard and soft edges are very accurate.

OP have you watched Sycra's Foundation of Light and shadow vid series yet? That should explain it pretty plain and easy to understand how light and shapes work and it is farily short for a long series most episodes are 15 minutes only. You might know all this already so if you do then sorry just skip it.

Also have something similar from Sinix that explains the edges and brushes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nt9fa8jZUE

Ambient occlusion is something also important to be aware of, here is quick explanation vid about it.

Hope these helped, again if you already knew these then return and say so.

The idea of some art being better than other art gives raise to a value structure. By extension, each artist is also on some nebulous place in this hierarchy.
Art critique is everything from technical to conceptual, if you can't deal with calling people names, you can't deal with art critique. So what are you even doing here?

Since you are using digital maybe it would be better to try and put the shading from different light sources on different layers and them combining them. Using that method might help you understand it more and offer you ways to adjust them.

Creating the illusion of depth in this kind of work is going to be through two things:

The drawing.

The values.

You don't have an environment, so ALL of the depth the eye will see will be on the figure, so you need to push the values harder, and have more contrasts, especially indicating the volume of the figure - ie. the back will be darker, significantly, than the front.

The art term to look up is "chiaroscuro".

Another issue is you're applying a special effect with the haze around the figure. Establish the values on the character before moving onto any special effects like that. It's throwing off the entire piece, and flattening it.

Your lighting could use some work, too. The eye and brain will pick up subconsciously if it's not working. You're about halfway there to credible lighting.

The abrupt change in focus is too extreme, between the tail and figure, as well. It doesn't look like it's connected to the figure. The eye doesn't read it as part of the figure, which pushes it to the background. The tail has the most opportunity to show depth in the scene.

Overall, you're too focused on special effects, and not the foundations of the work, especially the focus and values.

First off, stop drawing furries. All furries inherantly like to fuck animals.

Second of all, you don't have any understanding of how light works and how it interacts with an solid object.

Third of all, your edge control is shit. I wouldn't be surprised if turned out to be some nigger with Parkinson's.

Overall, not bad anon. I'd say just stop by the /beg/ thread and they'll help you out.

Op here,
Would you have any valuable information on what i can do to improve the way I work on lighting?

As well as practice it more efficiently?

Derpy me*, has massive difficulty understanding building the "mass" "Volume" When it comes to rendering.

I am aware I need to work on lighting, Not sure how to get there. Other then harder brush work, and ^ what these amazing folks mentioned with light/form.
