Has someone here ever commissioned an artist? I want to commission this artist that I really love, I sent a PM and got no reply, tried to leave a message on the commission page and got no reply. There is no reply from the artist to any of the other people who left a message on the comm page. What the hell? Is it normal that artists are so busy they don't even reply to commission offers?
I asked politely and the commission was a relatively high tier and the subject matter is not some perverted shit so it would be weird that I am being ignored specifically. Artist has been away for 13 hours on the site so definitely passed by the page somewhere around yesterday. Should I send another private message? Would that be annoying? How long does it take usually for artists to reply to messages?

Alright I've looked at his work and I think the issue holding back increased popularity is this:

He's too inconsistent. He's got studies, sketches and commissioned portraits mixed in with his pinups. I think he's good, not perfect but good. But having such a mixed looking catalog of work doesn't help. The people that like his pinups don't want to see commissioned portraits of elderly couples or birds. He needs to establish what sort of subject matter he wants to be known for and stick to that and stop posting commissions that fall outside of that. He could go further and focus on a niche like cyborgs, giantesses or feet. More fanart would help.

Perhaps an odd opinion but I think he could also do well focusing on appealing to a female audience. Maybe the reason we've got people here disagreeing over the appeal of his faces is because his faces seem like the sort that would appeal to a female demographic (and most of you are male). His fantasy pieces especially come across as very feminine. I'm going to guess he wouldn't be interested in this compared to painting nude women but perhaps throwing his SFW fantasy pieces onto a separate account and changing up the tags a bit could be a way of gauging female interest in his artwork. A female audience would likely also be more appreciative of his animal artwork.

It can be but it means you need to market yourself differently. When it comes to social media you want a very consistent 'brand'. You are artist XYZ and your main subject is pinups drawn in this sort of art style. The people that subbed to you because of pinups to you ONLY want to see pinups. They don't care about your animal artwork, they don't care about your environment artwork and if their first exposure to you was your realistic artwork they don't want to see you experimenting with anime or other cartoonish art styles especially if it is SFW stuff. People want stylistic consistency and subject consistency.

When it comes to portfolios for traditional illustration jobs in more traditional employment this sort of variety is more favorable. A children's book publishing company can feel confident you can draw more than just cute animals but you can draw nice environments for them and objects to interact with, for instance. If you get hired at a studio whoever is hiring knows you are skilled and flexible enough to work in other capacities in case there is some sort of emergency ("Our environmental artist is in the hospital for the next two weeks, but Anon is really good at environments and can help finish Terry's work").

For online presence though variety can actually be really bad.
