Is it possible to tell if a piece of art was made by a man or woman just by looking at it?

And in what ways do men and women draw differently?

There's been fun threads before where posters have to guess the gender of who made each image. I think people got it right more often than not.

Generally women put more priority on surface level appeal and men more on technical skill or subject. I also think girls have an easier time making a consistent style or brand for their work. Maybe because they have to think about their "look" from an earlier age in life in general. And then ofc if they draw stuff with yaoi vibes, or lots of cute girls who are either themselves or who they want to be, that's another clue.

Female artwork usually seems to be a little more 2-dimensional.

I personally have a hard time telling it apart either way, because you have a lot of females like the Nekopara artist and Haga Yui (of Baka to Test and Lotte no Omocha) drawing moe girls that appeal to a very male demographic.

There are a **few** times I can tell it's done by a girl. If their male ocs have feminine-looking faces it'd most likely be a woman. Guess the gender

>> No.3830538

Differences I have noticed, broadly speaking, women tend to:

>have better sense of color
>have a better sense of fashion and makeup, clothing looks trendier and functional in respect to details like straps and zippers
>more detail in hair and eyelashes
>more decorative embellishments like flowers and patterns
>drawn men are more likely to have feminine posing and body language
>drawn men are more likely to have feminine faces
>more likely to stick to themes long term
>when drawing sexual/suggestive artwork they are less prone to partialism and detail is evenly distributed across the piece as a whole

Men seem to draw more environments and more mechanical subjects

I think the differences are pretty obvious when looking at something like porn, where men are apt to really, really exaggerate the trait they are into or put more detail into the thing they are into (like drawing lots of fabric creases around the breasts and crotch and less detailing in other parts of the clothing). Once you get to high enough levels of skill though a lot of these little differences don't amount to much. There are top tier female artists who draw masculine faces and good armor pieces and top tier male artists who can draw beautiful dresses and have an excellent sense of color.

Strong emphasis of the character of mechanical objects with realistic detailing, especially weapons and vehicles - is usually a good giveaway of male artists. I dont mean just having used a reference - but really getting into what gives life to the object.

I used to think "childish" or chibi-esque characters, and cutsy bubbly styling was the exclusive domain of female artists. But Im not so sure anymore.

And I’m telling you plainly and simply that it exists exactly for the reason of you spewing on about why it shouldn’t. There doesn’t have to be a visible men tag because MEN ARE ALREADY VISIBLE. Is that such a difficult concept for you to grasp?

I can only begin to think of how many women throughout the millienia were put down and their ideas brushed aside or stolen by men, yet your argument is “if your work is good, you’ll be successful.” Except no, that wasn’t the case before, and is hardly the case now. We are JUST seeing a good change in professional fields for representation between the sexes because of people speaking out, taking a stand, and YOU’RE the one being triggered about it because you can’t accept that women are just as good at just as many things as men are. If something as simple as a hashtag celebrating female artists makes you this upset and jealous, your future is looking grim, especially if you have any desire to work in such fields.

Exactly. I'd say that's the natural "male bias", cool shit. It's extremely unlikely that you'll find a girl drawing that unless it's a girl who wants to act like one of the boys. Naturally once we grow up, if men want to improve their cool stuff they go for the realism route trying to make it all more detailed and women try to make their artsy drawings even prettier with better colors and rendering.

Of course some people will diverge but I'm fairly sure that's how it goes. An alternate evolution path is artsy boys drawing nude chics, they later on evolve into porn artists. Now that's a fun thought, it's common for boys to be drawing tits since an early age but I don't remember any girl drawing nude Greek guys and dicks.

And I know, you have every right to say what you want how you want, but as someone who's been strongly considering starting a platform to try to show that there are women and are feminists who legitimately do not hold ire towards men because of these systematic issues, and who further acknowledge how these systems are also harmful to men and want to show we advocate for the betterment of men as well as women, I get so disheartened seeing comments like these. Ones that may have good intent and good info but buried under needlessly inflammatory language. Every instance feeds the idea that feminists and women in general just hate men. I really encourage you to consider taking a more positive approach to help this info spread better if you discuss it in the future.

trying to rationalize why a female amateur and a male amateur are skilled in different things is meaningless because neither of them have trained for real and the differences between them can be just explained with interest. which can also be explained by basic social raising, if girls are told to like flowers, they'll draw flowers. if boys are told to like hot wheels, they'll draw hot wheels.
But when you take both and give them professional training, they can both draw fields of roses or speed racing. So why did it matter other than to make some stupid claim about something that's probably wrong anyways?

gender plays a role in what interests you. i had a cousin who was naturally drawn to war films and games despite it being out of his reach and had aunts who were very keen on learning to sew and keep order to stop fights from breaking out between boys.

obviously, you'll have exceptions to the rule but to disregard physiology in the body is foolish. just look at the interests female vs male artists have; what makes you think the structure of the mind and body doesn't play a role in that?

And for every "environment focused" girl theres a girl that draws nothing but men fucking each other. For every guy that draws loli shit theres a dude that draws vehicles.

It doesnt mean anything and you're trying to analyze something in a way that affirms your own intuition which means anything you conclude is filled with your personal bullshit bias.

Why does "physiological differences" matter if when given training the differences disappear?

its not personal bias or bullshit.
obviously people will have their preferences but genealogy plays a role in human instinct. if someone is interested in other things, that is completely natural.
every biological being on the earth is curious about the world around them but their core root and evolution will be predisposed towards certain affinities based on their genes.
im not basing this 'accusation' on intuition but from from nearly 2 decades of interactions with people from all kinds of backgrounds, and for a fact, these differences are highly evident in color perception and artistic sensibilities across the entire spectrum, and even on a geopolitical and environmental scale.

artists will like certain niches and ticks more than others because there are things about them that can gel well with the personality and instinctual chemistry that their body finds appealing, because those curiosities satiates those certain dispositions, to the point it can morph and evolve over different skills and other interests where they overlap and lend those affinities to developing other skills and interests, to the point where it can morph the mind and to an extent, the structure of the human body.

also, the physiological differences can be imitated given the correct training and exposure but the mind will also be geared towards their own biological preferences irregardless, but that can be watered down too given the correct training and environmental circumstances. but no matter what, the chemical infrastructure of the body and mind plays a very significant role in what anyone is geared towards.

everyone here, no matter what they would like to think, is guided by the limits of their body. you can train yourself to rid of certain things out of your system but they won't ever truly go away, and sometimes, depending on what that may be, might not be a bad thing.

both men and women are different. we might be human but we're all different in very unusual ways and being either or the other isn't that particularly important in the grand scheme of things, but they ARE important in the here and now.

I suggested that those frustrated by FOMO on trendy hashtags could address that more constructively than simply getting angry about it. Also I recognize that their inflammatory language comes from their lack of understanding, so rather than try to ask them to speak more politely which would only address the surface issue, my hope is that with education that behavior will change. I don't want to just force them to speak more politely emptily, I want them to no longer want to speak with vitriol for legitimate reasons that come from within them.

With you on the other hand, I said what I did because you're in a different position. I said you have every right to speak how you want but I'd like you to consider what your goal is. Do you want to change people's minds or do you just want to make them feel bad? If you care at all about making an actual difference, then I again encourage you to consider if the way you went about it here is an effective approach. Judging by all the immediate rejection of what you said, from my POV it wasn't. And every time I see this happen, it looks just as ineffective. Your posts were effectively the same as the anon who was, basically, whining. Just futilely spouting anger about something they can't control rather than trying to actually do something about it. So I gave them an option to funnel their anger into something constructive, and I offered the same to you, albeit in a different form to fit your differing situation.

If you'd read my post you'd have seen that I didn't demand anything, that I do want both sides to be better and I replied to people from both sides saying as much, and on top of all of that I _agree_ with the principles of the inflammatory posts, but I think there are more effective ways to deliver the message. In fact I think that kind of delivery hurts the message, and I'm speaking up because I consider it too important to let that kind of damage be done to it and stand uncontested.
Further, I'm not even necessarily suggesting "politeness". My own posts were a little passive aggressive and sarcastic, because in this venue I know that won't be too off-putting and can even help a post resonate. I'm only saying a post that starts off with "are you actually retarded" isn't likely to be received well. This isn't about "being nice" to the other person, this is just good strategy. I'd just like to see people on this side of the issue use that energy to sway people not shame them.

THAT'S what happened to Jace Wallace (Wakkawa)? Holy shit that is heartbreaking. For those who are unfamiliar with him years ago he was a hot ticket artist; he had fanart series that were viral darlings, was super duper popular on deviantart and got hired on as art director at EA right after graduating from Ringling. He was very skilled at a young age with a bright looking career.

And sad to say but his artwork has definitely deteriorated. He always pretty much just drew pretty girls but he had interesting compositions, color palettes and themes. Now its just bland headshots of pretty girls without all the thought and care that previously made them interesting. His faces used to look more balanced against the highly rendered skin but he got stuck on this overly anime clashing face design that looks like fuckin' Alita. Its so weird seeing so little engagement on his work and so odd seeing him sperg out like that, he was really introverted and barely engaged with his fans at all. I remember talking to the dude. wtf.

this was funny though

Out of curiosity I went digging, he's nuked himself everywhere but the Penny Arcade forums. He was evidently still well and employed in 2013 through early 2014, at which point he was laid off and months later he is displaying clear signs of mental illness. His scary twitter rants heavily imply his girlfriend of that time left him. This is just sad.

I did manage to find the texture he uses for freckled skin though, if anyone is curious.

I really can't tell desu.
I'm a woman myself and I paint detailed weird or fantasy sceneries. People tell me that my colour choices are great. They either have a warm/pleasing to look at colour palette or something striking and clownish. Yes I do draw extremely feminine looking men. It's deliberate, since I'm not really a fan of beards and massive biceps (perhaps because I grew up watching anime?).
That's basically some of the points about female drawings on this board I can relate to. But idk about the "men pay attention to the technicality of surroundings where as women care about the characters". I have see both male and female artists equally good at both.

You probably just need to use straighter/sharper lines and people wouldn't think your work looks like it was drawn by a girl. But yeah a pose like that will be considered feminine by a lot of people. My mentor told me generally speaking any pose with the legs closed together comes across as feminine, so that might be something to pay attention to when you're drawing.

Sometimes you can easily tell by the subject matter and style, but sometimes not. This is informed by cultural norms and individual bias. Unless it's a very distinctly masculine or feminine style or has obvious tells, it's a crapshoot.

Not really true, depends on what they're into. If they're less into Japanese media and more into western content (superheroes, western vidya) then they wouldn't do so.

It's a grey area. The girls aren't hot but still pretty and there's a lot of facial expressions that are goodish (but creepy and need some work) and the linework makes me think grill, but I'd need more to be conclusive. It takes finished work. The total lack of decent clothes and alien work is male, but almost homogay. It's also too beginnermediate content wise with the sketches, you can tell more from childish doodles or finished art. Color and composition are part of the equation. A huge part. The difference between other fags and tomahawk wounds is in the details. There are different types of fastidiously clean (or loose) work and color correction.

I'm going with grill until I see your bepis. I usually only have trouble guessing with certain types of humorous homoerotic fanart.

WLOP has a very feminine artstyle, people observing the art will assume it's a "he" drawing it despite the artists gender being unknown. Sakimi Chan on the other hand is a woman, you wouldn't know it's actually a woman drawing girls with big titties if it weren't for her yaoi-esque art. She also doesn't draw twinks.
I think the visibleWomen hashtag is kinda lame because from what I've seen, many of the best artists on instagram are female. They range from yaoi line art to highly complex environment art.
This isn't the best place to ask that question. This is 4chan, you wouldn't be surprised to expect someone use pseudoscience to claim "women make badly drawn yaoi art". They want to inject their beliefs about women not being able to pick up a brush and paint a tree because they lack testosterone.
