Stupid questions thread / questions that don't deserve their own thread.

I decided to get a one month subscription to NMA, but it's been three days and they still haven't processed it so I can't access any lectures. Are they usually this slow or should I contact support?

How do I get good line art? What makes it different and better than flat lines?

>> No.3829205

>>3829184
Line economy, weight and flow. Pretty much all lines should be simple CSI lines. Add line weight to focal areas, undersides or places in shadow, parts that are closer in perspective to the viewer or when you want to create space between two things that overlap. Things that are stretched will have thinner lines in the areas that are stretched. Avoid tangents like )( shapes or conveniently converging likes like Y shapes. Don't chicken scratch. Plan out your lines. Think about what your line is trying to describe and find characteristics you can add to the line that distinguishes it from other lines, if it's needed. Don't add thick outlines to an entire object because that flattens it.
These are just things to think about. Experiment and be your own judge of what works or doesn't.

https://youtu.be/r5nvzsslajk?t=3644

Also, from my own experience, if you're drawing from imagination working in proper lines won't save you unless you understand the volume that you're trying to describe.

I really want to know, what is this (picrel) art style? What are it's defining features? Does it have a name? Does it draw from specific fundamentals, or a style (eg. cubism, expressionism, etc.)? What are the techniques, that create such results?

These are just basic questions that boggle my mind. If there are any details you are capable of extrapolating from the image, please go on.

Efficient? There are no shortcuts. Learn how to draw and render it, by practicing.

Dynamic? That's pretty subjective. You make choices when you draw, and you insert dynamics into the drawing. You learn to do this over time.

Interesting? Also completely subjective.

Get some cloth. Drape it over something, light it. Draw it. You'll learn what's interesting and "dynamic" over time. That's how the masters did it.

Make an account and put your socials in the profile page.

Post links to your various galleries and commission prices there as well, but on your page, not in the profile.

/r/learnart is pretty good, but a good majority of the resources you're gonna want to look at are easier to find here in /ic/, thought they're a lot less harsh over there critiquewise (when you can actually get critique.

All art-centric subs are self-masturbatory and anything that isn't absolute top-tier high-quality work is completely ignored.

Posting to themed subs and their memey counterparts gets you much more traction, as long as you don't specify that you made the work because self-promotion is looked down upon for some reason. Always include a link back to your gallery/twitter handle in your piece. You can get bonus points if you make an alt and claim that 'your friend/family member/boyfriend' made it. However, if you post from your main account don't be afraid to own up to the piece if someone asks who made it, as at that point you can respond with plugs.

God damnit guys, I'm having a very irritating pen pressure bug in Manga studio 5.

Every few strokes or even mid stroke the brush cuts or defaults to what seems to be the lowest brush size even though it was fine previously. I tried reseting ms5, and even reinstalled the drivers, but nothing works. Is this only a bug or the tablet giving out?

This is on a fresh win10 install because my pc crashed last week so I don't really know if paint 3d is accurate with p.sensitivity to test it out, but it works fine on that. I'm already late as fuck for work, tablet giving out right now would be some fucked up timing.

yes, but that didn't change anything because my tablet is detected at all times, the driver functions normally as far as I can tell.

can I download older versions of wacom tablet drivers? if that doesn't do it then I guess the tablet's done.

I'd say it's because digital art is more accessible and cheaper to get set up, and also a mix of not sharing "dirty" lineart or pictures that show smudges. There's also the fact that most people think that just using digital means you're automatically a better artist. As for the people who switch from traditional to digital in progress charts, I have no clue.
I'd say money is a big factor, as well as it's easier to correct mistakes in digital (ctrl-z), and add photoshop tricks to trick people to think you can actually draw.

practice drawing cubes like that. start with something like two cubes for the upper half of the body and two for the lower half. work out what the cubes look like foreshortened in perspective, turned, tilted, whatever. after that move on to things like cars, shoes, or playground slides. rotate those. then try rotating people around drawing them at every angle rotated and in perspective. look up "krenz perspective" image studies. you need to start with primitives and understand perspective before you can do the body. then it's just filling in the blanks based on the bodily relationships you're using. things like finding midpoints in perspective and subdividing are a must and eventually they'll be ingrained in you.

find krenz stuff that's been subbed, there's some lectures on cgp and an unsubbed mega in the artbook thread i believe

An easy setup for this is to draw a narrow rectangle over a figure, then cross it from corner to corner to get a central point. That central point lines up with the pelvis, and then you can distort the rectangle in perspective to put figures in perspective. Where can I get a jpeg archive of pencil drawings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele? I found the most amazing zip of high res Sargent paintings on /ic/ a while back, which I believe were from some kind of museum/gallery/archive website. I want to study more masters from high quality scans.

Many thanks!

so the iguana or whatever looks like he's using some raster textures, the pupils don't look like they're aliased, and the body/head/tail seem to be on different layers of lighting for different scenes. they have inverse hull/cel shading outlines on some parts of the body for the comic thick outlines. the horse looks more like his stuff is vector or curves to the point where some of the shots are straight on and could be projections of an svg.

You should understand what different pencils do and what you can (and want to) do with a pencil. Harder pencils (h, 2h, etc) will produce thinner lines and lighter grays. Softer pencils (b, 2b, etc) will produce thicker lines and darker grays. With a soft pencil you can regulate the thickness with pressure in a much wider range than with a hard pencil, but it takes practice. I usually use one 4b pencil for everything I do with a pencil, but I don't do much, only rough sketches. Mechanical pencils are fine, but you should know that most of them have thin leads so you can't have any variation in your line weight and can't fill large areas by tilting the pencil. But there are mechanical pencils with thick leads.

yes, however you can be looser with painting. you still need dexterity to be able to get the brush to do what you want. a good drawing is necessary for a successful painting. if you find yourself redrawing large portions as you paint, scrap it and start over from redrawing it before painting.

trad translates to digital more than digital translates to traditional. then there are some things that work equally both ways but it's useless to describe until you see for yourself. i find digital really difficult to get decent linework with but i enjoy painting with it. there are a lot of things you won't understand with digital for a long time that you would find out quickly with traditional, but some things are easier in digital.

opacity and brush density are the most important features for me when it comes to brushes in csp. i use 1 to 0 on the top row for density, shift + numbers to adjust opacity. also set a hotkey for mix ground because you don't always want that on. for pushing paint around i would recommend something that's like the blur brush to mix what's there, or a drier mix ground brush. there's an acrylic gouache set on clip assets that has some nice default settings.

The pressure curves are hard to get right so I forgo it and use a CSP brush where the ends taper automatically; if I need to make it thicker I go over the line again or adjust the size. If the aspect ratio of your photo isn't supported, it will be cropped to fit a supported ratio. If you share a photo at a lower resolution, we enlarge it to a width of 320 pixels. You may have to just take your time for a while, worry about speed later. Place every line thoughtfully, and carefully. Observe and take in what you are looking at and just go bit by bit, even if it takes you a week. Personally, I get impaitent and fatigued very quickly and have the same issue, lose a lot of accuracy (it is as though I tell myself my current motivation lies on a very short timetable and so I need to get something out before it's gone).

How the FUCK do you read and study the book? I've been drawing for three years, not /beg/ tier anymore and even gained some followers, but the only book that I've read was "fun with a pencil" and I didn't even finish it because it was boring as fuck. Right now I'm reading "Anatomy for sculptors". Am I supposed to redraw and analyse every picture?

I've tried going really slow, really observing. I read that "Draw what you see" book, the exact title/author escapes me, but essentially it recommended a 'Look, Hold, Draw' approach, really focusing on observing and taking in what you see. Still didn't click for me. Maybe my issue is just shitty hand/eye coordination? Which seems unlikely because I've been doing this for a while now, not to mention other activities that should enhance my hand/eye coordination (sports, video games). I appreciate the advice, i'm just frustrated that I can't seem to draw what I see, so I'm struggling to learn from life/ref.

About adding weight. How do you know which ones to make thicker say, between a line that's "closer" and one that's in shadow? Not sure if clear. Like say line base is 1 mm, then in shadow is 3, then line closer to the viewer is 3 too?

You develop that as part of your style. These are not universal rules. Depending on how your drawing is going, you may decide that you need to add more line weight to X rather than Y because you judge that X needs to communicate the idea implied by extra thickness more than Y. That's the sort of mindset you need to be in.
Look at line art that you like and investigate the decisions that the artist took. Tracing and redrawing it yourself would help a lot.

Best to just practice with it in mind. It's actually not that hard to do and there are not that many dimensions to it, so you can figure out something pretty quickly relative to other topics like color.

Also there was this other Scott Robertson video I forgot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0zl5NnEAyU

I didn't call you retarded. I've just never heard of the pen wearing out. If you take a Wacom pen apart, there are no parts to wear out - the nib sits in a copper coil that attaches to a circuit board with wires and floats inside the pen case, and THAT can get gummed up with dust or crud, and you can clean it out. It sounds like that's the issue. It's worth looking into before dropping the cash on a new tablet. There are no mechanical parts to wear out. If the wires were broken, it wouldn't work at all.

You shouldn't varnish a painting for AT LEAST six months, depending on how much oil paint you laid down. Thick layers can take years to dry. You don't need to varnish a painting right away, as it's protection for long term, not short.

>I've just never heard of the pen wearing out
me neither, which is surprising, I already bought it though, as I was in the middle of too much work and couldn't really wait. 85 bucks on what seems to be a petty good tablet that's going to pay itself in an hour or two of work is a pretty good deal to me. I was looking to upgrade to a screen tablet soon anyway, apparently newer ones don't have that glass gap between pen/screen which is great.

I did open the pen to maybe clean it, but I still have the same issue, I noticed the copper at the tip was a bit loose, but too dumb to know if it's normal or broken. I'll look into it a bit more, would be cool to fix an 80€ pen, thanks though anon.

If you mean rendering when you say drawing, and you spend a lot of time detailing shadows within the face to end up with the result you find attractive, but only have low standards for the body so you don’t define it properly- it’ll end with your work looking kind of unsatisfying.
