Is there any hope for 2D animators that don't wanna do CalArts bean smile bullshit? All of the major studios do 3D, and the rest Flash or other rigged animation program.

Quality Western 2D animation is basically dead. I think there's that one studio in Texas that does the recent Castlevania series but I don't know if they actually animate or just outsource. You're better off animating on your own, or with a small team. Corporate pipelines are overrated, in my opinion. You can make quality stuff without the meddling.

I'm glad I don't mind it being a hobby. I would be depressed if I wanted to actually do something with it. Sucks, man.

I have a friend I know who freelancew and he's doing just fine. Not sure if you've tried that yet.

This, do something else as a career but put your whole heart and soul into animating properly as a hobby. It's going to be tough, but you GMI if you truly want it more than anything else in your life.

The most important take-away is that the technology for animating nowadays is cheap and accessible, there's little to no excuse not to get a couple of buddies and start animating in your spare time. Most people wouldn't even have to quit their day job to accomplish something decent in a year. Everything can be done in 1-2 programs, from animation to sound design to camera work and rendering. It's just like you said: most people don't REALLY want it. the dream of working for some big company (CN, Nickelodeon, Disney) is just a fantasy they have, not something they're actually striving towards.

Animation artist here OP. You need to be great to just find a job in animation and exceptional and get your work out there to find the occasional commercial or spot with a unique style.

Animation is the single most useless thing you can learn in 2019. Even comics is a better field. I follow a person that got famous making Steven Universe fan animations that look 100x better than the actual show and apparently she mostly works on shit like mobile games. The animators I follow on Patreon take half a year to make things and they get pennies for it, but sure people do love sharing the finished animations. It's just not feasible.
The only example I can think of of an animator that legitimately made it is Felix Colgrave and skilled furries who make porn.
