Horror themed art thread, OC only !

I've not drawn in years and only recently started again, I'm still really rusty and honestly, somewhat frustrated with my current art so I'd be happy for any and all constructive criticism

>>3816746
Keep at it anon, I could see that being a minor insect enemy in a video game with some more polish

it makes me a bit sad that /ic/ doesn't have more horror themed art threads, I know there are artist here who enjoy and practice that kind of thing so I was thinking of making a thread similar to /beg/ or the stylization general but I need to organize the resource links before then, do you think there would be an interest in something like that?

As for criticism, unless it's just your style, eye sockets are never perfect circles and I think the perspective on the nail in it's right leg might be a little off.

I really like your style, it reminds me of old school horror comics !!

>>3816746
Keep going at it ! I think that creature actually really fits for TBOI since it's centered so much around different stages of Isaac maturing, and I guess this looks like a sperm version of him, not in a meme way.

Yes and no, I'd say that artist have the goal to elicit an emotional reaction from the viewer. Its up to the artist to decide what emotion to go through. Fear and disgust are two very possible (and easy) emotions to draw out. Picking a theme (or emotion you want to evoke) for your art and focusing in on that is a better way to get your work to click deeper with the viewer and yourself. Some people chose cute things, I think that it's probably easier to make something overly cute then horrifying, but honestly, the emotion every artist wants to re-create is awe. That is where you are right in a sense, having the talent and skill to create something that leaves the viewer frozen in time for a second is a very admirable goal. I chose horror not for my lack to create other emotions but I found it was the emotion I liked to experience most aside from awe, my obvious final goal

I think subject and tone need to be divorced here, you can depict animals in a horrific way, architecture can be intimidating and humanity can be cruel, so long as the end goal is to evoke these feelings from a viewer

So, instead of inability, I'd sooner say its easier for me to get a reaction out of people with this type of work, and that's why I keep coming back to it

this ties directly in with my previous post. It's a shame they are missing their intended emotional mark. but it's not surprising, I've had that sinking feeling for the last little bit as well.

Not too long ago I voiced my worries in a vent thread about this very thing: My work is becoming repetitive. I like horror but I also like creature design, environments and landscapes but I don't seem to paint them anymore.I have fallen into a rut where I know the work I put out is not suitable for a portfolio, and I'm not really learning as much as I should be from the process. Personal life, habits and other things get in the way from me fully bringing it each time I sit down to paint, so I default to the same theme/setting/design at this point.

I had a very similar thing happen with creature design. I would love to make all sorts of beasts until I found that I unintentionally posed each of them in very similar ways (profile view to show detail, 3/4ths for action, never head on because creatures don't work that well like that) . This bugged me until I almost outright stopped drawing them. This is going to end up happening to this type of work very shortly as soon as I find another emotion or goal I want to produce that overthrows it

>>3820058
I forgot to mention that, a lot of the time, I'm one of the laziest people you'll meet unless I'm very driven to produce a certain goal. This ties in with why I've made essentially the same picture a dozen times over

tl;dr You are possibly more right than you know, anon. it's not insulting, its a very troubling monologue I have been having with myself, and seeing it written by someone else is a bitter pill. But one I need to take none the less. I shall narrow my purists and aim higher then this. all the best to you my friend

this drawing was probably the last creature I had worked on, and there's a very clear blending of the type of work I was getting into

im 076 anon. its nice to hear your thoughts on the process. i want to clarify that you are both a better artist than me and a more productive one. my critique was purely out of desire to see you possibly push out better work. hell, you do creature design better than me and that was what i claimed i wanted to do.

i feel a critique is unfair if you will not (at least) go as far as to suggest what someone could do different so I backpeddled a bit, but as its becoming clear, im in no real place to talk to you as if i know what im doing.

on the topic of laziness: dont underestimate that feeling of energy to run for a goal. i can't even make myself do that anymore. i just play video games and sulk, mostly. we might both be going through rough times so ill say that you should hang in there. at least one of us should make it.

I come from the belief that the accuracy of a critique matters more than skill level of the person making it. If you are right, what does it matter that you perceive yourself to be less talented then me? any gap in skill does not make a fact or an observation any less correct. You are right, and you should not need to feel like you have to back-peddle friend. Your comment struck a cord with me, and for that I am very grateful for it

Thank you for being invested enough in my work to wish me to succeed. Hang in there as well anon. Yeah, the anatomy of surface muscles of the back and stomach is my worst. It's so hard to render the subtle plane changes with hatching.

I had a few features from a couple of animals I wanted to re-create, mainly a snapping turtles' arms and hands. As I was drawing I roughed out some lore and had it push the design further. In the end, it went something like this;

people of the deep southern swamps of america's hottest and muggiest states always carry a sharp switchblade around with them. They do this not for the ill tempered wildlife, or the vines that tangle and grasp at any unlucky passerby, but sooner for Billie. See, when anyone gets lost in that gross thick swamp it becomes a death sentence. As night sets in, darkness surrounds them and the beasts and ghouls come out that will almost certainly devour any man of any strength as soon as they set eyes on him. That is when Billie will arrive.

Not fully beast, but still, far from man, Billie is the ferryman of the swamp. He is a benevolent soul who looks out for the lost and vulnerable. He will lead these poor people back to the safety of the outskirts of their town stead. You may wonder what the knife is for if billie is such a kind being.Billie, like Charon himself leading souls across the Styx, demands a price. Only one finger for safe passage. And you must collect the payment yourself. What he does with the fingers is stranger still; threading them on a necklace that he adorns himself with.

The knife is for those smart enough to know, and that way, they don't have to use their own teeth to bite their finger off. So, if you happen to be in the area, and you see a local without digit, ask them about Billie, and they will surely recount an interesting tale

Not quite so happy with this since I only realized halfway in Satan has 6 fingers per hand and 3 sets of tits.
