Looking to buy my first dip pen, anyone have any reccomendations or just things I should avoid so I don't make any beginners mistakes? Or is it better to get a nib holder instead? I've budgeted about $50 for it but maybe that's a low ball for a decent pen

I recently bought some after looking through the "rendering with pen and ink" Guptill book. (I recommend skimming it, it's got lots of useful information both on tools and techniques) They recommended the Gillott 404, Gillott 170 and the Gillott Crowquill nib. The 404 and 170 are fun to use and work well and probably all you really need. They can produce very thick and thin lines on their own and you can really draw just about anything you want with them. Ink flow is nice, the tines have a nice balance between flexibility and sturdiness, all in all they're breddy fun to use. The crowquill is a bit more difficult to use. Idk if my ink is too thick or if the paper isn't right but it's hard to get the ink flowing properly and the point is so fine that it becomes difficult to avoid scratching the paper, take that as a warning I guess. I'm using a Tachikawa nib-holder and the Gillott ones fit in it just fine, I think any nib-holder would do desu. They're fairly affordable, got everything I needed for ~10 bucks with shipping. Hope that was somewhat helpful.

The Deleter starter kit has a holder and 3 different nibs so you can experiment. Here's a list of some of my nibs and my take on them.
Hunt 102
>the standard for comic inking in America. Very natural-feeling with amazing line variation. Main drawback is the inconsistent manufacturing honestly. I buy the little 2-packs, as those apparently are more consistent than the boxes.
Hunt 107
>very stiff nib with little variation. Great for things you would've probably used a tech pen for and even hatching.
Maru Soft
>very close to a Hunt 102, maybe a bit stiffer. Great all-around nib.
G-Pen
>big line variation and flexible. You have to be careful with pressure to keep control. Extremely expressive nib.
Saji-Pen
>easy to use due to the bowl-shaped tip. Doesn't catch or rip paper. Great for writing, even lines, and beginners.

If you buy a Deleter starter pack, the holder will have you covered for all the Japanese nibs I listed. Tachikawa has the same kind of holder. The Hunt/speedball nibs will need their own holder. I have a metal nib holder with a clutch that basically accepts all small crow quill nibs.

Etching is the same kind of drawing, except you're carving a copper sheet instead of laying down ink. Most of the masters at etching mastered their technique by practicing with a pen, I would bet. It's the same linework and crosshatching.
