So, this girl made a twitter thread blaming a guy from a band for trying to pay less for her art. He wanted a t-shirt design with 100 characters, the price she puts for human figures is R$30 for each, so she would charge at least R$4000 for a t shirt design. And people think she is right

Just seems like stupid on stupid violence right here. Wanting a 100 characters for a t-shirt, charging by the character and not by the hour, not setting up a contract, not getting half the estimate up front. The price if anything is low, an illustration can take 6-10 hours normally, lets be conservative and say it only takes 1 hour a character, so 100 hours of work for $4000 comes out to $40 an hour, low for a professional but not bad.

Why the fuck does anyone need 100 characters on a T-shirt

more deviant art world nonsense, people like this art professional by name only likely take business advice from other internet OC commission artists. Charge an hourly rate. if it takes you 20 hours to draw those 100 characters so be it. but shes not doing good practice by expecting 4000 dollars. If its that challenging for her she needs to charge that much she shouldn't be doing art.

alright thats fair enough for a tshirt, depends on how big they are but if they have a big enough following asking 1000 usd isnt a big deal.

$4k. Yeah, that's out of line for t-shirts. I used to do t-shirts for arena/stadium level bands, and the going rate a couple of years ago was $500 MAX per design. It used to be more - in the 90's, you could pay your rent with a couple of t-shirt designs for medium level bands every month.
These days, all I hear from people still trying to work with bands is they get "exposure" for pay. And fuck that noise. It's why I retired from music work.

Nobody making band t-shirts gets hourly rate, no manager or band or t-shirt company would hire that.

Flat rate, 100% buyout, standard rates for everyone. Last time I did one it was $500 a design, regardless of how long it took.

Maybe 25 years ago. Nobody gets paid in music anymore - I know photographers, artists, designers, that used to live off music related commission work. (I did it on the side). They all do other stuff now, because there are no budgets. The big acts are handled by production companies that use in house or overseas "talent" for the cheapest bid. Or in niche genres, like metal, they get fan made art, cheap.
There is NO money for art in the music business anymore.

okay then get someone to do it for free? I agree, theres no money in music now. But if they were making money it would be fair.

>> No.3802821

Well then the commissioner shouldn’t expect someone to do such a labor intensive design. If he doesn’t have the money ask for something less complicated.

A lot of them do it for free. It's a good way to get published. It's not big money anyway, so why not.

I used to make 2.5k - 5K for doing an album for indy/just breaking level of bands, doing the art and layout. For that kind of cash, I'd throw in a t-shirt for free, or convert the cover art to a t-shirt or poster. But those days are LONG over with.
The last gig I was offered - and this is from a band I know for a fact does 10k a week on merch, was $100 and a free shirt. Like, really? How much meth is the band doing these days?

I've had a couple of "Hey, for old time's sake, could we get some free work?" offers, and as they're not friends, and my landlord doesn't take "old time's sake" for rent, I politely said I was retired from commissions.

I agree. Go tell the band that, and good luck getting them to listen. Musicians are notoriously cheap, always have been. They want iconic work, but they hate paying for it. The old school bands understood and paid well for it, but they're all retiring or dead.
