TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

So i've been doing some more character practice and I'm figuring out the 'formula' to get this character somewhat consistent and decent looking(aiming for second from top left).

You should use atmospheric perspective values for one. Things that are closer are more defined and higher contrast, things that are further away are lower contrast and lighter. All values are relative to those around them so you need to consider this instead of thinking only about what the value of each object individually would be.

Hello again Anon good that the video helped you. From your image I would say you could use to learn more about gesture to convey more lively actions on your scene and also composition.

I do not speak Japanese so I don't know what is happening but I tried to change the characters to be more emotional and move moving a bit. I could be misinterpreting what is happening sorry if I am but I hope it helped to give you some idea. A good idea that if you want to draw a character doing something you try to imagine your self into it and do the pose in real life this will give you ideas one what pose for them to do. So stand up and start moving yourself!

2. Composition is extremely important for making comics/manga because you need to draw a lot of separate images for different purposes.

So I suggest you next video to watch this about composition.

You plan the drawing ahead of time and don't draw/color in that region.

If you can't do that (as unbelievable as that seems to me), then erase it. A kneadable eraser is best, because you can form a fine point. Or, take a big pink eraser, and cut a wedge off that has a sharp point. I bought a box of them a while back, and just cut them to what I need, and keep them and the pieces in a small box.

Colored pencil - same, don't color there, or use a white pencil or a China White pencil (grease pencil, they're wax based and will sit on top.)

Or, buy a bottle of liquid mask, and paint out the areas to keep them pristine.

Mostly it's thinking ahead of time. You should start any drawing sitting down and planning ahead, looking for issues like where to keep the paper clean.

I can't really give much advice as I'm not 100% myself but some advice I got was that when you're drawing legs, not to draw the 'bone' going straight down from the hips but instead to draw a wonky 7 sort of shape like in pic (excuse the crapy mspaint). This gives you pretty decent control as to how wide you want the legs/hips to be.

Block everything in. Take the midtone of the background and put it in there. Same with the fruit. Leave the lightest areas alone and put your light tone in those. Fill it in all the way. >> No.3803074

>>3803026
It's less technique, and more looking at the surface you're working on. Pastels don't have to be on paper - for archival purposes it's the worst choice, as the oil in oil pastels doesn't totally dry, ever, so it gets into the paper and rots it. I've heard conversations on this many times over the years.

Couple of things to try -

Thicker, less rough papers - you can use anything, like 300lb watercolor papers, thicker art papers. "Pastel" paper is always rough textured, to allow for more layering techniques, but for the kind of painting you're doing on, it fights you.

Adding gesso to the paper. They have gessoes formulated for pastels, you can tint it, too.

Or, just use them on gessoed canvas, or boards. I've heard regular gesso can work fine, but I'd try the stuff made for the purpose. I knew someone who did oil pastels on gessoed masonite, she'd do textures in the gesso to create effects, like raking a comb across it to make ridges. She seemed pretty happy with it. She build up heavy colors like you are.

At the Children's Creativity Museum in SF, they have a big room with huge piles of Sculpty, and stations with webcams that let kids make movies, it's that easy. Just get some Sculpty and a camera, and start experimenting.

Practice. There are no shortcuts. Study classic engraving, especially artists like Dore and Durer, and try to emulate what they were doing. Work on your line technique, and using variable widths, and use crosshatching to create value. Practice by filling simple shapes with lines to create values that are close to grey values, like try to figure out how to do 10%, 20%, 30%, etc.

There are no "rules' to it, work out works best for you. Practice using lines and their angles to convey volume, shape and depth. It's pretty challenging, so be prepared to put many years into mastering it - the greats like Dore and Durer did.

So I cleaned this up a bit, fixed the length of the left leg (I thought it 'felt'(?) too long) and started marking where clothing would go.

At this point I realized there was something wrong with her hips, where the legs connect and just the crotch area in general.

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong so I can either fix it or be mindful of it in the future?

Reading perspective made easy
How would I go about finding how big/small i'd draw the 2 figures marked by the 2 x's?

>> No.3803750

>>3803624
The bottom one should be around as big as the second figure from the right as it is on the same ground level just a little more to the left. It would be big enough to cover most of the central figure.

The top one figure size depends on where you want to put it as it is not standing on the ground or any other objects and so we can't say how far it is before it is drawn.

Finished it.

Not happy with it but I was able to figure out the things I think I did wrong.

>Neck too long
>The more I look at the head the more off centre it looks on the neck
>She wasn't meant to look exhausted but not weary
>She looks grumpy instead (I think)
>Fucked up leg and pelvis placement
>Especially on the left leg
>She's meant to be bottom heavy so it might not be as bad as I think, conversely it could be worse
>Arms are wonky and I need to work on my hands still
>Not sure if the legs look right
>Really need to figure out how to draw that hairstyle at different angles

I'm happy with her overall design but if you guys could confirm where I've fucked up on a technical level that would be great. The more I get wrong now the less I'll hopefully get wrong later with a little guidance.

I think that is understandable. I would say you need to focus on settling a few things with your self Anon. I think your are focusing too much on the result of your thing and their worth in your eyes when thinking of others. I would suggest that you try to look at things in a broader perspective instead of focusing on getting the desired results now try to focus on the long terms of your. What art you produce now is still just one art, it is one step in the journey towards somewhere, so one art good or bad doesn't really hold as much weight as your current give to it. I know I know it is always the current one that is most important, but this will also pass. Try to just get into teh habit of just putting out more art for the sake putting it out instead of focusing on the quality of it and bringing out your absolute maximum and making a masterpiece.

Next is inadequacy and and thinking about "a pro could do this way better in 10 seconds." I get it and that may be the case but that shouldn't stop you from doing it, just because there is someone that can do it better that doesn't mean that you shouldn't do it. Besides everything that we do today will be done better in the future, that is how it has always been since the dawn of history but alas here we are. What you need to realize is that, yes others may be able to do it better but they WON'T because they are them and you are you. They go t their own things they want and you got our own things, both should be done. If you are not doing it then everyone looses out. Remember yourself based on the art you just did is not the sum total of your worth, it is not you, judging yourself based on it is foolish because it equivalent of judging a book by its first page. It is just one setp in the process of a journey a long journey you do for yourself.

As for findnig a billion things wrong with it, that is good and you should, you are learning right now you are supposed to make the mistakes to learn from them.

I was watching an old modeling video where the guy mentions he has the correct dimensions due to having gotten the measurements for a building "from a book" and scaling them accordingly. He's unspecific in which book, or whether or not it's just a book that had the measurements for that one specific building, which was probably the case. There's no one book like that I'm aware of. You can just google "standard door size" and get an answer pretty easily. There may be architectural reference books that have standard sizes for building elements, but that won't include beds. Beds have standard sizes, like "single", "queen", etc. You're just going to have to google specific things and compile your own reference. Also keep in mind that "standard" can mean different things in different contexts and locations - a standard window size in Europe is probably different than a US window. For starters I'd suggest just scribbling random lines, maybe loosely sketching a simple landscape and some basic shapes until your brain gets used to it. It's really important your tablet is perfectly centered in front of your screen and parallel to it

>> No.3804172

So, I just stared reading Fun With a Pencil by Loomis and drawing a lot while reading it, and I understand what makes it important, but I feel like im almost forced to draw in his goofy art style. Has this been a problem for anybody here? Should I just be appropriating the ideas of the book but drawing in the style that I want? Is it even applicable to all styles?

>> No.3804173

>>3803762
Drawing from actual faces, combined with what Loomis is trying to impart - to look at a head and try to visualize volume and features. Look at people you know, get a mirror and use your own face, and try to incorporate the construction methods into trying to capture a likeness or expression.

A lot of art is synthesis - combining all of the parts into a whole. That's one of the things that's poorly taught or entirely missing here, because so many have never taken an actual drawing class, with a teacher who walks them through it, and most books focus on one aspect only.

You're at a loss because you're expecting a book to do the work for you. You have a pencil, and some paper, and a world full of heads. Draw them. Take the lessons of Loomis and learn to break them down, and recreate them on paper. Expand upon it. Make mistakes and learn to correct them.

The process is the key here. Putting pencil to paper will help you more than expecting books to walk you through every step. Art is VISUAL. Being an artist is looking at the world, and recreating it on paper or canvas or a computer screen. Being an artist is learning how the face works, by looking at faces, and using the construction method to figure out how to recreate it, and building a visual library in your head for how to handle things like expressions.

Good points. Too many people here are focused on "perfect" and have very bizarre beliefs about art, and "pros". What they don't know is that 90% of any artist's output in the beginning isn't worth showing anyone, and the goal is to focus on the getting more of the 10% work that is, by practicing and experimenting and diving into the process and enjoying it, not making endless posts of depression and self loathing and other emotional issues, because they can't create 'perfection" after a year of study (I use that term loosely).

It's all too much cart before the horse. Like threads agonizing about choosing their artist's name. That's so far down the list of priorities for an aspiring artist it's not even worth talking about - become an artist, then worry about that.

Art education is a journey. It requires patience, and time, and dedication - and churning out stacks of failures, to get to the successes. Anyone who tells you different is selling you art tutorial snake oil. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Not everyone can - are you one of them? No way to tell, unless you try. You can't cheat it, can't grind it out, or force it. There are no guarantees.

And, focus less on the "billion things wrong", and try to find the things that went right, and build off that. That's what a teacher would do. (Which is almost impossible here, since "critique" is almost always "you suck" and "NGMI") (This place is more about ego and autism than it is about art. Have a problem with that? You're who I'm talking about.)

No, you're not an idiot, you're a student. Nobody goes into something like this knowing everything already. You made mistakes? Welcome to the club, I made PLENTY starting out, still do, will continue to until I stop trying. That's the same for almost every artist, ever. Cut yourself some slack. You did enough right, and you learned something, move onwards and upwards.

Always remember - your mistakes are not the only thing that defines you. The goal is to develop skills so your successes outweigh the failures.

You're doing fine. This is one drawing of many, don't get hung up on it.

Show your work. Don't work in a vacuum. Post something here - expect the usual shitposting, ignore it, listen to what the reasonable people say. Show your work to people who know what to look for. That's what you'd have in a classroom setting - feedback.

When to move on? Do you feel confident that you've mastered what they're trying to teach you? Treat it like any other subject - if this was a class, and they asked you to create an example that shows you learned the lesson, how would you do? Could you teach it to someone else? And, since you don't have a teacher - show it to someone who can look at it critically and give you some feedback.

Confidence will come with time, and experience.

To get a better idea of what advice I can give you. Play around with the pressure of the brush pen, you can get good variation of line weight with it. Draw dots, thin lies, thick lines, dashes, curves, ect. just to get an idea of what lines you can use. Your pic has the same thick line work around it which flattens the image.

Practice your hatching with the fine liner, get clean lines that helps convey the shape and shadow rather darkening the areas. Keep at it, the more tools you have the better.

Neither. You're not getting the actual structure of the body. Pay attention to the hips, waist, and ribcage. Your drawings look like she's just a tube of flesh in those regions.

Mostly, this is not a good beginner pose, as the pose is too extreme and too much of her shoulder is obscured. Look for easier poses while learning, you're putting issues into the drawing you're not skilled enough to deal with yet.

With that attitude, don't. Find another hobby.

Now, if you want to TRY, get it into your head that this is actual work. Most artists struggle in the beginning. If that's too much for you, then art is probably not for you.

Learn how the skull, spine, and neck is structured. You have the face so far forward from the skull it looks like a mask, and the skull sitting far too forward from where it actually sits.

LOOK at people. Look at them from many angles. Look at how the neck, spine, and shoulders are build. This is why we study anatomy, to see the underlying structure, so we can draw skin that drapes and covers the structure.

Art is visual. Use your eyes.

Try to find an artist or any stuff that you like and that represents your ideal artstyle, a goal you want to accomplish. Now don't set the bar too high, don't try to replicate it perfectly, but try to understand how artists drew their figures and how a body works. That's basically it. You can also mix and match multiple images into your own OC, just do anything you enjoy. Having fun while drawing keeps you on the track

Studying the form, and learning to put that into drawing form. That's why we study anatomy, and do figure studies. Dig in - there's endless amounts of free resources posted here every day.

That's why I encourage simpler poses - it's easier to see the basic structures. Every figure drawing class I ever took started with simple poses, for that exact reason.

And, we improve by doing it, a lot. Every drawing takes you a step closer.

>everything they produce is meme-tier
Either you embrace that or you learn from the bottom up. Allow me to re-phrase my post: look up simple tutorials that cover anatomy and try to understand how joints can bend and how bodyparts look in/from different poses/angles. You're probably at a very awkward starting point, trying to overcome that is fairly difficult. Just learn how to draw body parts as simplified shapes until your confident with them, and THEN you can try to replicate other people's art (maybe start out with simple 2D shit, the artstyle of people like sakimichichan is very hard to accomplish without years of hard training). Always remember to not trace images or copy them line by line, but to build the body and the pose from scratch up. This gives a great learning curve.

I don't know how to do that, but I'm going to go google it and stop posting because this conversation would just be

Man those asses are really distracting. Anyway, try to analyze the curves and forms you see on the figure and try to use simple C and S lines to convey them. Try reading the line of the spine and see how it attached to the head, curves on the back, and then how it ends on the tip of the pelvis. As for legs, use curve lines to help convey their form. You're getting the idea, you just need to draw bigger. I recommend you read up on hampton's book on figure drawing, it will greatly help you.

Professional art channels on YouTube (like Proko, one of my favorites) really go in-depth on different parts of the body and muscles, and how to draw them ofc. For inking, it really depends on your style, if you don't wanna go for cartoony/ anime then staying with a pencil is fine. As far as I know using a thicker pen for the outlines and a thin pen for details/ smaller parts works best, but it's all just a matter of finding out for yourself

The perspective is off. I'm not an expert, I'm a beginner too, but something about it is just off. I tried to "fix" it, but I don't even know if I am on the right track. It's just the table, man, something is off about it.

You got a pretty cool artstyle going there, but one thing I notice is, that your chin isn't symmetric. Oh and another thing is, that your highlights and shadows don't really make sense. Try to make the shadows go into the opposite direction of your highlights. Yeah, pretty good! I guess you can train yourself to make your lineart a bit cleaner and the strokes less "wonky", but that's just a minor issue with your heavily stylized artstyle. I like it!
Oh and exercising shadows by drawing real life objects always helps, squinting your eyes when looking at something helps to make out the highlights a bit better (at least that's what my art teacher told me back in the days, haha)
Keep it up!
