A cool idea, but needs to be recomposed via a new, more carefully thought out sketch. Good perspective & thoughtful accuracy of the trains will really pay off.

Also - watch out for the vertical tangent between the edges of the top train car and that foreground tree on the right.

1. Mixing anime features with realistic modeling on the environment and body don't work. Choose one style, stick with it.
2. Using black, instead of different values of hue. Stop hiding things in large fields of black.
3. The composition is awkward. You've created a "V" with the figure and the lampost, and it leads the eye out of the picture, and not to the focal point.
4. You have the same focus and values on the foreground (lamp) and the figure.
5. The color composition is flat and dull. There is no real distinction between cool and warm, and it's all black, purple and yellow, but the face shows none of those hues, which it would - the purple of the dress and the face would reflect the warm yellow of the lamp. Without it, the figure isn't composed into the scene. You tied the ground into the lamplight, but didn't for the figure. You have white light reflecting, not yellow.

Lol. Accidentally posted this on the Trad Thread due to dyslexia. I'm such a fucking twit! So let's do this all again:

I was just going to do a quick paintsploration and here I am noodling away at this guy 5h. later. He was going to be a vampire at first. Then a blind guy with a stick and eventually he turned into a fucking cowboy.

I feel like his feet are kind of floaty. I'm having a hard time placing them on the ground properly. I'm thinking I might introduce some direct sunlight on his upper body to really make him pop. Need to take a break now so I can see all the horrible anatomical errors later.

Let me know what you guys think!

I kind of like this, but I'd like to see you tighten it up some.

Note: the eye kills it. The pupil is always in the middle of the iris, this is offset. The eye is drawn to eyes on figures first, and if they're off, the piece doesn't sell. Add some more color to the iris, too - generally you can just darken the top, and let the color get more intense the lower it goes. Maybe throw some green in it to offset all the red of the hair? Hazel eyes and red hair is a common combo.

Also, define the edges of the eyelid - the juxtaposition of the blur and the tight lines in the eyeball are jarring.

Color-wise, I like it, a lot. It's very pleasing to the eye.

Ayy! You're right. I didn't do a drop shadow yet since there isn't going to be a proper drop shadow. His upper body is going to be lit from the left side so I'm only going to have ambient occlusion on his feet. He might have a slightly darker hue under his body though because there's blue ambient light coming from the sky. I dunno. I just think the shapes of his feet are kind of fucky atm. I'mma look at that shit tomorrow.

Thanks for the crits, guys!

>>3791882

I really like how much love you've put into this babe. If it's not blatantly fucking obvious, this type of shit is not my specialty but I still did a little overpainting. I don't know anything about manga/anime shit but I went with my idea of "rule of cool". More fuckable to me, personally...

So, I think you have her whole face perspective was kind of fucked up. It's like you're trying to force her proportions to a front view even though she's really tilted. You're also trying to force the nose to be on top of the mouth even though her head is tilted.

I thought, since you're already going to stylize some human proportions you should go a little further with stuff like her eyes. Your version just kind of looked tired to me so I gave her that o_O look because she's already kind of goofy with her tongue out. I also tried to give her a more cat-like look where the corners of her eyes are slightly higher.

I don't know if this is an existing character but I thought her expression would read much better if she had black eyebrows. Even if they're supposed to be white, people can wear makeup. She's already got some fake tiddies so why not some fake eyebrows?

I thought her lips looked kind of weird. I wanted her mouth to look more "cute" so I gave it some shape.

Just let me know if this overpainting is horrible and I won't overpaint any more stylized stuff...

I looked up the artists you mentioned in your first post and I could see that they all work in a pretty monochromatic palette. I'd say you should start from something like pic related.

It doesn't look good now but if you really want the look of those guys you should start with a semi-monochromatic, midtone image and start to build your saturation and contrast from there.

Obviously this is not the only way to go about things but you seem to have a particular style in mind so I'm just giving you my 5 cents.

Dude. I think you should still go for it.

If "I find it awkward to go from grays to color" then you have to practice that especially if the guys you're looking up to are doing that stuff. It's mostly a matter of using adjustment layers to build up saturation slowly. This can also be done in traditional by having a limited palette and introducing more saturated colors slowly. Zorn's palette is fucking great for shit like this. You're probably not going to stumble upon a way to emulate that style if you don't learn the techniques you look up to. I'm not trying to be mean here. Just keeping it real.

Try to paint one light source at a time. Think Ambient, Fill, Reflected light, Rim. Paint each one on a different layer and don't try to paint them all at once. This paint over is overblown and I purposefully illuminated the eyes because... Eyes. but that's all the time I'm going to take on it.

P.S. Put a bunch of secular highlights on places even if it doesn't make sense, normies love that stuff. IE: A spec highlight wont appear in the shadows.

One thing I'd focus on is your proortions. Anime style aside those shoulders are super broad, the neck is too thick, the arms are too short. Good work though, but I think the #1 thing to help would be if you focused hard on getting your proportions + anatomy perfect. As other anons said, you can stylize after your foundation is solid.
>>3793028
Really great work if you've only been doing this for 6 days. Keep practicing, practicing, practicing. As an exclusively digishitter, I'm really envious of anyone who has the time, space, and commitment to working with oil or acrylics. 1 and 3 are nice, and the jewelry box in 3 feels really solid.

For this one, focus on the stuff that isn't flowing first. Right now, everything looks blurry and formless. Get the snow looking really solid, get the creek bed looking really defined and sharp. You'll be left with blurry looking water, and if you didn't do anything to it at all it'd still look more flowing that it does now. From there, you'll want to emphasize only a few parts to convey motion. Most of it should be blurred, and you'll want all of the blurred ripples following a logical physical progression of going downstream. Have a few sharply rendered splashes of water droplets to or reflections on the otherwise blurred surface to really sell it. See pic related.

>>3794015
Really sharp work. Almost too symmetrical (unless that's what you're going for,) try to add some asymmetry (even if it's just slight line variations). Looks great though.
>>3794029

Just practice as much as you can. Painting is like working out-- the more you do it, the easier it is, and the better you get at it. As another anon said, don't be discouraged by your age, anyone can learn to draw / paint at any age. #1 thing I can recommend in addition to finding a guide is to also have fun! Draw what you WANT to dry as well. Even if you're not pleased with the results. Keep going. There's this good quote about this, lemme abbreviate it:

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work."
Don't give up and keep at it!

>>3794355
In addition to everything else, I fuckin love the rim lighting dude. Envious of your skill.
>>3794422
Great start, what ever became of this? Love the coloring you have, and the linework is really great.
>>3794840
Make your scribble texturing more intentional and cleaner. You've got a good gradient in the sky, but it looks too chaotic. Slow down a little I guess? It's very readable, but I feel like you can still work on making the linework cleaner while still preserving your style.

try messing around with the colors of the your backgrounds more. it’s hard to read right now. blue colors recede into the background creating more depth, red colors go to the foreground. so making the mountains a blue-toned grey would look way better. i don’t expect you to change this piece but i made an edit so you can think about applying this stuff to your future backgrounds

When i draw a portrait, at the end i can nearly superimpose (not sure of that word) perfectly my draw with the model but when i try to draw without a photo i can't do anything. If you're really struggling, study the bones and muscles that make up a face. If not the names, then at least the positioning and shapes they make. You'll know that your face is wrong if it doesn't have the right shapes / components. From there it's just practice and creativity.

Very few people draw without references. It's a weird myth that people perpetuate, in the same way that some artists downplay the amount of time something takes. There's no shame in using a reference, every great artist who you've ever seen has heavily relied on reference and modeling.

I think can see what you were trying to do with the skirt. It's not poorly drawn but it blends too much with the rest of the image and it doesn't look like it was a counscious decision from you to make it stand out. If you don't know him already check out Simon Stalenhag's stuff. He also likes to add weird/out of place/anachronistic elements in his environments.

I'm not too sure how to improve the arm. The silhouette doesn't read in that area so that might be a place to start. The hand doesn't read either. There is a weird tangent with the blue thing under the rib cage that almost looks like the forearm and seems to connect the elbow to the hand. The actual arm is behind her torso right?

Anyway, don't listen to the crabs. There aren't a lot of people here who try to give constructive criticism so your feedback is welcome.

for the figure, the drawing errors are the first big flaw. the figure in armor/helmet doesn't make sense, the armor had a thickness, and it should be reflected in that. the anatomy is pretty off as well, particularly her neck and head in helmet, the width fo her arms, and her arm position in general. try and hold your arms like that, it's impossible for them to be straight down.the other glaring error is in your definition of forms.you'be kind of got a sense of the general direction of light, but it's not consistent, and you have trouble with planes turning only slightly away from the light.

Just saw this feedback, thanks man. Funny you should mention Stalenhag, I've actually got a lot of his art and have studied a lot of his snowy pieces for this painting. I'm still playing around with a lot of the coloring, and I agree with you about the skirt not popping right now. In my mind I want it to really catch the light and glow, but I'll need to work on it more. Arm-wise that's already been redrawn, but I need to work on it more to get it looking less wonky. Ever since the early sketch (not posted,) I knew the arm pose was fucked-- since poses are difficult for me, I just ignored it and worked on trees and snow. I'll keep working on this though, thanks for the in depth feedback

My next drawing I need to discipline myself to work big to little and think “shapes”.
But I’m drawing from life reference so what I need and what you need are probably different (I don’t know).
Hey maybe try this... make the landscape, get the shadow shapes right along with perspective, then start your character, keeping her in perspective with the scene...shadows, light, POV, all of it.

The only thing I would change is the length of the upper part of the left arm. If you actually compare it to the right one, it's way too short. The elbow should normally hit at around the waist. I hope pic related gets the point across, it's the best I could make with my phone.

I agree. I don't think you belong to /beg/. You could do a proper pencil drawing over your sketches and I bet it would turn out just fine. Also you're still missing a depth of value in the skull itself. The darks aren't dark enough, for how dark you've made the background. You're thinking too locally value wise.

What I was referring to were things like making parts of the skull extremely angular that aren't in reality (parts of the jaw etc.) and losing that curve you get on the corner of your brow ridge. You also over emphasized the curvature of the teeth. There are some thin parts that should be thick and vice versa. I don't mind though. Still look a e s t h e t i c.

I actually like the radial pattern on the background. It adds a nice "designy" quality to the piece as a whole.

Cool pic find.
Yeah man this is the hardest thing I’ve drawn so far. If you saw the actual skull I drew you’d see a lot more wrong with what I did.
The thing that was most frustrating was the paper I was using. Stonehenge aqua hot press. It’s super grainy and fuzzes up pretty quick. And it’s almost like it gets embossed with one or two passes with a kneadable eraser and then when you try to apply graphite it splotches up and gets grainy in some parts, other parts don’t take.

I’ve got some conqueror paper coming in the mail. It’s supposed to be super tough, takes erasing, and good for detail.
So yeah, I tried to keep it open as long as I could but at first I couldn’t even find an anchor point, an outstanding feature I knew was absolutely accurate, so I approximated and went from there, knowing there would be trouble:(

Well, I’ve posted it to get critiques. I ve incorporated many of those and the drawing benefited greatly. Thanks guys if you gave them.
Endgame is awesome drawings and oil paintings.

Hey man, I hope you don’t mind a critique.
First of all, looks good. I do like it. Pretty powerful looking dude.
Maybe take a little more time on the torso. Not so detailed as to take away the emphasis on the head, but right not it looks a little sketchy, kinda kills the well drawn aspect of the thing.

Awesome!

I really wanted to because you really showed a lot of dedication with this piece, spending a lot of time and effort getting all of the details in there. I just wanted to give some tips to help you push it to the next level.

part 1

Lighting
- Lighting kinda lacks direction. You have two key light sources, the light coming from the left, and the green light from the device. Try to match the light on objects to the sources (unless I'm wrong and the green light is mostly from another source out of frame).
- Light is also the key tool to show form. Use it to add depth to objects.
- Use lighting to help the viewer focus on key areas. It also adds drama when needed.

Colour
- Overal, the colour temperature is quite cool. This is not necessarily a bad thing (you can make a painting with just cool colours), but you have to make sure there is a little bit of contrast in there.
Adding a few warm tones in there will add points of focus and helps to make shapes pop out. Also, having different hues in a colour (in this case various hues of green) will add visual richness.
- Please note that when coloured light falls on differently coloured objects, the reflected light changes hue. So, the green light will look differently when bouncing of yellow brass, grey fur, etc.

This is so awesome, thanks for putting this much effort into helping me out! I really appreciate it! I will definitely use this info for future work

>> No.3798034

>>3798027

part 2

Rendering
- Please make note to render different materials accordingly. Fur, polished metal, skin, ivory, glass will all have different properties regarding reflectiveness, glossiness, translucency, subsurface scattering, etc.
- Overall, your image has very contrasty detail. Bright patches next to dark patches. This makes it very hard to distinguish shapes and greatly reduces the feeling of depth. It becomes like a b&w line drawing. Reduce those contrasting patches and limit high contrast areas to where you want the viewer to pay attention.
- Since you spent so much time on rendering, be patient and keep your line work consistent. The metal parts are rendered very loosely, with lots of squiggly lines that actually define nothing. Block out the shapes and forms, then add detail when needed.

I also would consider tweaking the werewolf's left claw. It feels a bit cramped and not very intimidating.

With the overpaint, I tried to be as generic as possible, and in the process I might have changed the mood or design you originally intended. Please do not mind that, as I just wanted to focus on the lighting/colour/rendering.

Heyyyy! This is pretty cool! Make that glowing thing the main light source on the character. Your shadows look kinda random ATM. I understand what you're going for with those wrinkles on his/her pants (They're tightening up towards the ankles) but you should make some of them in a way that shows us the angle where we're looking at the character from, you know. Like a slight upside-down U if you get what I'm saying. Especially the leg to our left is fucking with the perspective really bad with the wrinkles pointing down like we were looking at their leg from a top view.

Hope you understand what I mean here. I can do an over painting if this all sounds confusing or something.

So yeah, I tried to get rid of the wrinkles that were IMO going to the wrong directions. If you need a good ref for stuff like that search for "James Zapata Ganon".

I'd change the value structure so that the image gets brighter towards dat ball of light on her hand. I might even make that ball almost white. The effects you had on it were really cool but if it's supposed to be some kind of super powerful energy thingy I think it'd work better as a more emissive object. Didn't really do it in my overpaint though but you get the point... You could get away with some really nice drop shadows from that to her body. I don't know how they'd go in reality because I don't really know what I'm doing but you'd have to figure that out. I'd probably try to figure it out in Daz 3D or something.

I'd make the background darker. maybe even into a stormy night/evening sky? It'd just be more epic that way but maybe that's too edgy to your tastes.

I went 150% with everything I'm talking about here in my quick overpainting just to illustrate my points more clearly but I hope you can get some of my ideas.

I would like some advice on coloring.
I'm pretty bad at colors in general, I wanted a warm brown background and dimly lit scene.

I know about the general rule of cool and warm colors, but I couldn't see how I would fit cool colors here.

I made a small guide for you that might be helpful.

The thing to remember is that most colours have a warm and cool variant. Warm blue - cool blue, warm brown and cool brown, etc. It's not like every blue is cool. So don't add blue to your painting just because you feel you have to.
