What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. Real critique though, its way too stiff. her back is ramrod straight but she's angled down on a couch orgasming and being fucked. but its not like she's buckling either, its just a boring straight line. get some fucking gesture in there. also her body is just 2 sections, it typically works better in 3s, or at least with some break in the middle, 2 circles makes it feel lacking in form and structure, she looks like one of those cartoon caterpillars.
also, her support arm is fucked. angle it back more so its actually supporting her.

The main issue I see is the connection between the two figures (the hand grabbing the hair). In my shitty gesture drawing, you could see how this situation might not work when viewed from profile. Hope this helps some. Keep at it.

I find expressive, simplified drawings way more enjoyable to make than finely-rendered, anatomically-rigorous drawings. But the idea of leaning into a more graphic style makes me feel guilty, like I'm really only doing it because I'm too lazy and inept to make "real art". How does one reconcile the desire to have fun with the desire to Get Good?

Also I'd advise you to get rid of those ugly marker marks on your drawing. The knives look good, Because the three values are 'clean', but it's messy on the big piece of cloth

I vastly prefer the first one desu. The colors are more pleasant, it looks more 3 dimensional, and I honestly think she has a nicer face.
Not trying to be mean ofc. Might be time for some hard training. Figure drawing should be good for you regardless, and then studying the human face until seeing it in 3D becomes second nature should help you.

the light should be hitting harder on more than just the hat and knees, or cut back some on the light on the hat and the knees. if you want to keep the light as is the cuffs need more light and so does the bottom of the dress.

Are there any people in here who are experienced with studies? I'm thinking about doing a bunch of them of contemporary anime artists and skilled painters that I like but I'm not really sure of how to get the best gains from it. This is a side by side study that I'm going to paint over. I didn't really do it by construction but rather by outline and measurement. I'm considering maybe switching methods to tracing and then painting over the traced figure (at least for those cases where there is an actual, good lineart that I can get info from). Here's how my setup looks, I guess this is how you do studies on the computer?

I'd consider making her right arm a bit longer to account for the slumped shoulder. I'd also at least add an eyebrow for her closer eye. Consider closing up your lineart and erasing all the little line stumps, at least if it's final. I'd also try to clean up the lines in her hair to our right.

i find it most productive to pick one thing in particular you want to study and later on you can find ways to combine more. linework, rendering, colors, construction, thumbnailing composition/values. you can do at least 5 entirely different studies. starting off trying to work on more than one of those at a time is too unstructured in my experience and you end up noodling around with no direction. for a master study you'd put the same effort as in traditional. if i was going to work on rendering, i'd probably trace. otherwise, do copies/construction.

I'd recommend not color picking until the end when you're comparing what you saw with what was there. Keep in mind you're trying to paint like Copics. What you've started with isn't going to get you there that easily.

If I was working on rendering, I would only look at the three most interestingly rendered parts of that photo. To me, that'd be the abdomen (the line between the ASIS and the bottom of the rib cage), the breasts, and from the eyebrows down on the face. The rest of the body follows from those parts so once you learn the important lessons it's probably time to stop. A half-assed full study isn't really as useful as starting the study over again from scratch or moving on to a new beginning.

For the skin, I would have started off with the midtone. Her skin midtone is much more desaturated than what you have, which becomes apparent with the more saturated shadows of the skin not standing out against the midtone as much as the original. The light/highlight is far warmer and yellow, not white. Your relations are off becuase the midtone is too saturated so you oversaturated the shadows and they come out looking much more orange. A noisy soft round will help you get some of the texture on the body instead of using textured brushes. More soft round and less hard flat will get you closer to the original's blending.

Yeah, guess my main objective with this one is to better understand tummies and appealing proportions. I'm deliberately using a single textured brush and I'm probably going to keep doing that.

I'm thinking of doing this fun experiment where I'll try doing copies of paintings and then original work heavily referencing the source painting to hammer the knowledge in, while increasing the difficulty with every painting.

Oh awesome job, I wasn't really sure of your level until this so that's why I recommended the brushes. You definitely salvaged it, maybe next time to make it easier to see values block in some abstract shapes of similar color behind which would be fine to almost color pick and slightly adjust. Main thing I'd worry about is your color observation like the gloves, far too green. There's a color shift too in the highlight from the hot spot, to a muted salmon, to the glove color. It looks pink or blushish due to color relatively, I actually thought it was a pale blue violet at first. You have to think of the layers of marker from lightest to darkest if you're going to be copying more copic work. Good job though.

Not sure if this is the place to ask but I didn't want to make my own thread for it.

I'm currently going through Loomis to learn anatomy and just drawing in general but my goal is to eventually make a webcomic, even if only 3 people ever read it. What would you guys suggest picking up after Loomis to help with this?

If it matters my favourite artists are Alphonse Much, Ivan Bilibin, Keith Thompson and as far as comics go Mina Sundberg, Mike Mignola and the guy that does K6BD.

I really enjoy the colours and linework associated with Art Neavou and would like to incorporate that sort of style. I also find crosshathcing very appealing but I'm not sure if they would work together.

Really I don't know what I'm trying to say but I guess I'm just trying to give enough information that someone might be able point me in the right direction. Any direction at all really.

I use a hard brush first to define shapes (shadows), then the blur tool on the edges i want to get blurry. Then i keep working with hard/soft/semi-hard brushes depending on what i want to do...
Also, when i'm defining the form (shadows) i try not to go too far with the darkness... it's only at later stages that i take a leap (sort of) on both darkness and saturartion.
Tho i'm not sure if you wanna do what i do, i'm still trying to figure out a proper way of doing it.
