It's still one of my favorite serie, even if the later games never toped the 2nd one.

I prefer games where the skill cap is your actual experience, and does not lie in how much "experience" you have. Which is a shame cuz I like a lot the fantasy aesthetics. As a side note, good fantasy books which don't have the "levels" bullshit are equally hard to find

You would probably like the endgame then. Extremes raids and bosses are real challenge that can't be beaten with just being max level.
But reaching that point is painfully long now, with at least 60 or 80 hours of story with the extensions.
I heard they added shortcuts to high levels though

I played a little of end game on private servers which made you max level instantly

at first they are fun but they don't have the gameplay diversity to keep me hooked. There's "dozens" of spells for each class, but they all boil down to
>do dmg (instant or over time, or dmg buff)
>heal dmg ( or variations like shield / taunt / dmg debuff)
and a few others like invisibility, breathing under water, teleport or whatever which might aswell not exist with how much of a influence they have on the gameplay

gw2 it's atleast better since it doesn't pretend to be more than it is, a button smasher

what I would like to see from a fantasy game is mordhay for melle, and arma 3 for ranged fights. All in one but with a fantasy flair, and where support spells actually play a important role in the gameplay (for example in logistics), and there is a player driven market where the items conjured by players are not inferior to looted items and actually serve a role, instead of filling the skill tree only to make it bigger for the sake of seeming full of details and player choices.

And most importantly, for the magic not to be given on a silver plate but hidden in coding of the game, where the players have to try shit out to discover spells and not "reach level 10 to unlock double dmg on one handed weapons".

For example in alchemy you have to discover your own formulas, and they can be discovered at any level, sold or taught as long one has the ingredients. And if the playerbase harvest without giving the plants time to grow or create farms, to drive the plant in extinction. Same for mobs (oh, you need Blue Fur Lion spleen to cook this? too bad, players have killed all the Blue Fur Lions for their fangs in the 2022 season). No spawning, good ol' growing from seeds, and on seasons too. Some players could make bank by simply buying the seeds when they are in season and cheap, and sell them in the offseason.

except for areas where there is no ambient mana, magic users should be kings, it makes no sense for a warrior to be able to stand toe to toe to a mage

Magic should take mins to cast a spell, not press a button and "wuuu, pretty colors". Magic fights basically revolving around infusing magic in items in down time, to be able to cast them on a moment notice when you need them.

There is so much you can do, you are basically rewriting the rules of the world with magic, and yet all games revolve and force the gameplay in close range battle (idk what you are saying, anything under 100m is close range)

I definitely like the art direction and I snap up the books even though I don't play. If you haven't done so, check out Tactics Ogre. One (two?) of the artists from FFXIV worked on that one and has a similar aesthetic.
