IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3772468

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

I've seen some artists on Instagram who always seem to get perfect likeness and proportions in their portraits. How is such consistency possible? I could take a photo of an outlined face I drew, put it under the reference photo in Photoshop, and get good proportions by checking mistakes like this. But it feels like I'd be using a crutch and might as well be tracing. What do??

Depends how fine you want your borders. Microns are fine, they just tend to skip, catch, and cut into cold press, I'm also not fond of how CP scans and looks in print but that's just me. If you're just inking on top, you shouldn't have serious problems with bleed and lifting, but I'd test it, I don't really use marker pens when I can depend on india ink being a consistent pain in the ass already.

There's always mixing your own blacks and using a liner brush. Venetian red and prussian blue is dark as fuck, as is pthalo green and perylene maroon. Getting a liner you don't mind destroying and using ink is also a possibility.

No criticism since I can't tell what are you going for, but watch all of Proko's videos on heads. That'll get you started. This is a short one, the first one, for a simple front view
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ZLkyTuX_w

That's the method basically everyone on /ic/ uses. You have to do that thing with the circle and semi circles and planes, you do that a few times and you'll start getting your proportions right. There are more short videos on heads from Proko, you should watch those.

And as if that wasn't enough, just now I see he released a 30 minutes deluxe tutorial on heads
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAOldLWIDSM
I haven't watched it, but skimming through it it's the same method but expanded. Just let Proko teach you heads with whatever video you pick from him.

Don't shy away from the tutorials my dude, those techniques aren't just for realism. The "Loomis method" (that circle/mannequin head) is used for anime too. It's a blank space and you fill it with whatever you want, but using that template will give you good proportions. So I recommend again checking out the videos, just seeing these images on google isn't very helpful you'd just copy without understanding the point.

I'd like to create art similar to the pre-rendered backgrounds used in Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX, but I don't know where to begin. Honestly, I'm not even an artist at all, but it's such a beautiful style that there should be more of it in the world, and I'd like to add my own if I can. That said, where do you think I could start? My idea is to look up pictures of city streets and other environments and copy them until I gain a sense for it, then move on to incorporate the more unique quirks and eventually color and so on. It sounds like a huge undertaking, but they say that anyone can be an artist, so I thought let's try it.

Doing what you're doing is already tracing once removed. Hence why you want to move away from copying and move towards construction and learning anatomy. From there, it's really all about measuring and angle relationships like others have mentioned. If you want perfectly accurate drawings, then sight-size won't be enough. However, you can try your hand at caricature which tends to get likeness even without accuracy. You can learn to pick up on the key features of a person's likeness from those techniques.

Good effort on trying to get the gesture. You can actually push the motion and curves just a bit more. First though, you should try to break down the body into basic shapes and mass rather than hollow line curves. For instance, you can draw the ribcage as an oval shape, the pelvis as a block shape, and then connect that with the spine. The legs can just be cylinders or even lines for now. Think in terms of building blocks. Basically, you need to learn construction.

Started off good but then the legs. Seems like there's no structure to the body. Looks like you're treating each part like it's separate. Like you draw the head, attach a chest, then arms, then attach legs, etc. It ends up looking disjointed. So when you draw a figure, you want to think of the whole pose as one thing. Don't worry so much about the head or any individual part as it will fall in line if you have a good structure and a good pose. Focus on a solid construction first and then you can add the details on top.

Style is important, look at Krenz's sketches and your favourite anime artists, most importantly his linework looks loose but good. Try and get your lines the right the first time (SAI is easier for linework)/ This girl also looks a bit skinny and undefined so look up manga clothing references from your favourite mangos. If you examine Krenz's sketches he breathes life into the pose primarily through the curves in the spine and exaggerates curves. Keep working.

Not sure if it's ok to post here since it's a 3D model. But I'm not interested in 3d-specific stuff, such as topology, vertex weights, etc, but the anatomy. I think this board is the most appropriate for visuals of anatomy questions.

All of the pics correspond to the same model, who is supposed to be very busty, yet natural. First row is in resting position, bottom row is with the breasts being supported by an imaginary bra or other piece of tight clothing.

Bottom row just looks utterly ridiculous to me. Like she has two spheres bolted on. But I THINK that's how I should make her. It's the kind of shape bras give, it's just that bras aren't invisible. Still, they look stupid. Any redlining would be appreciated.

I'm also not sure about how the ass-leg connection looks in the 45º angle view. I like it in the side view, but it looks a bit too much in the middle one.

I don't mean to make a realistic character, but I don't want it to look too alien-y and repulsive, either.

Any help/red lining will be welcome. Thanks for reading.

This is looking much cuter, that chin will help you more. You shouldn't try round faces like you did before until you get better.
A tip I'd give is to make the main circle a bit bigger so it stands out and you get more space to put bigger hair. Hair is usually a big part of anime characters, idk if I'm being clear. Trying to make the top of the head less flat.

This is good already but still more western than anime. You can try adding eyelashes to the eyes to make her look beautiful and using harder edges on the upper half of the eyes. Actually I'd make the eyes smaller and change the face to make it less round but that's where it gets tricky, there's tons of anime styles so taste comes into play. This is an example of outlining the outer edges.

You want to get good at drawing, right?
Good artists don't try to sneak by with randomly placed lines hoping they'll pass as folds. Sure they might jot down random stuff for some landmarking at the start, but from there they go on and actually think about the folds and connect them with each other, imagining a structure below the whole thing.
So if you want to get good at drawing, start trying to do the same. This skill won't improve much just by drawing a shitload of poorly thought through clothing - sit down, look at references, try to see the whole image.

I don't think you need us to tell you that you need to work on your hair and gesture. You didn't draw a whole lot of things that *could* be critiqued. Your hands are one - they're fine. The texture of the clothing might be another, nothing wrong there either. The face is carried by the eyes which are fine as well. Your hair is half-assed. And here it stops - what else is there to give input on? That's all your drawing is. Don't expect critique while comfort-zoning.

I'm currently reading Hampton's book. I look at the muscles he presents, quickly copy them and go draw naked bodies and see how the muscle reacts in different poses and then move to the next one.

Are there more specific exercises I should be doing?

Also does anyone got a good resource full of naked bodies?

To make your mountains look less like drama class plywood murals, you need to realize that parts of the mountain are closer to you than the peaks. Knowing that and seeing that your light source looks like it’s left of center behind the subjects, parts of the foregrounds of these mountains need to catch some of the light... also you need to use darker darks for the base mountains color... I circled some spots... at the bottom of these there should be some brighter light. Account for the shadows created by the peaks/crests of the mountains.

Lazy example.

Usually it's better to redraw lineart as using liquify on it can change the line thickness slightly and if you don't work at high res it can become very blurry and as you can see, everything is not always according to plan so undoing, brush resizing etc and generally playing around with it is good before you actually use it.

For paintings there are people who use it all the time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do7dJFCJWpo

There's also warp/transform, perspective etc that you can use to bulk resize and move stuff around.

Try not to use these sorts of things on studies but for everything else it's fair game

This isn't even the end of all the hacky stuff you can do in PS. It has basically the most hacky ability set of all of the programs (especially colour filtering/selective colour/colour balance etc) which is why everyone loves it even if the brush engine is pretty dismal at best.

If you're working in SAI that one has an inking layer which is all vectors so you can drag your strokes around and change the thiccness after you draw them. CSP I don't use for much but the hackiest/most useful feature I've seen is a close all gaps selection so you don't need to line your character properly (it can still have holes in the linework) and you can still select it and fill it in ridiculously quickly.

I'd do figure drawing first (and allow up to like two hours). Then once you've figured out figure drawing, cut down figure drawing times to a half an hour limit.

Once you've figured out figure drawing gesture is much easier but give yourself at least 5 to 10 minutes to start out with and then you might be able to cut it down to 2 minutes. Ridiculously fast drawing is a meme (it's actually easier to achieve fast gesture on traditional than digital)

>If you're working in SAI that one has an inking layer which is all vectors so you can drag your strokes around and change the thiccness after you draw them.
The tradeoff being that the pen tool looks like shit. It's a great learning tool though, since you can play around with the lines until you see how they should have looked compared to what you drew.

SAI's the best for sketching/drawing refs, CSP's the best for inking and PS is the best for painting I've found. Luckily all the drawing skills you acquire from drawing transfer between the programs.

>>3778347
Yes. It seems overwhelming at first but you get better and faster but getting it right is more important than plowing through it at sanic speeds and you'll probably be ctrl+zing it often in order to get it right. You don't need all the details, but the level of detail in, for example, these loomis poses is good.

Yeah I do. I think you can learn a lot from watching others draw, but of course some parts of the process are just going to be routine work. Maybe it's better to watch a cut video than an entire stream.

I tried something. The bottom left curve going all the way down kind of hurts to look at, but otherwise I'm happy with it. The jarring mistake here is that I accidentally made the right side tunnel narrow down into almost nothing, which I think happened because I copied the central pillar much too small and it screwed up my image reference. Otherwise, certain areas are lacking detail or are a bit awkward (I don't plan on finishing it due to the above screw up), but overall I'm happy with it. In fact, I get something out of looking at it that isn't there in the original image. See it for yourself if you'd like (>>>/wg/7330870).

Deleted the last one because it was rotated.

pic related may look complicated, but you need to establish a horizon line during the sketching stage of the drawing. once you have done this you can then begin to build into the landscape with multiple aspects of the drawing in the background and foreground.

you've done a good job by having the mountains in the back and the waves in the front. its a good composition so far.

ditch the lined paper, even if you're just doodling.

how about trying some more simple posing, however you must try to keep the figure consistent, looking your work the proportions are all over the place, try to keep them consistent for a couple of drawings.

this isn't to say that every figure should have the same proportions, but its a good practice to do a couple while trying to keep them similar.

a torso is usually 3 heads long (highly depending on the size of your characters head and their age) and the arms should come down around the hip area.

This is extremely hard to see in your drawing. I suggest you pay more care to proportions in your construction lines and fill in detail (hear necklace, eyes, that ugly dress) once you're happy with the proportions of the sketch.

She is so adorable! The hands do look strikingly off, it s like they are these goofy cartoon clown hands, there is a huge disconnect between the detailed anatomy cute face the hands.

Obviously not done yet but looks workable so far you could add more shading on the garments an just more shading and colors overall.

My attempt to make the hands better, maybe too girlish for someone like her but I love girlish hands. Also added a bit broader shoulder and pulled the top inside a bit to make room for the arm.

Please continue this anon! Report back with more wips.

The closer the object is the more values are visibly the father it is the less they are visible. Try to push more richer values to the close parts more lights and darks (especially more lighter ones on your pic) and fade them a bit on the further away parts, make them just mid tone grayer overall this is especially true for the mountains at the left side.

Having a clear value read will make it look a lot better (download the mullins course and watch the value section on 2x speed). Your foreground thing needs to be distinct from the background, that's a cheap but effective trick that a lot of these artists use to make stuff look better, apparently and I try and do thumbnails the way mullins explains (using white, light grey, grey, dark grey, black) to test stuff out before developing the art.

Also at sunset the clouds tend to be lit up from behind with yellow/reddish colours and I find that using blueish colours instead of grey like in the krenz paintings seems to make it turn out better.

This is my go at a similar subject material i.imgur.com/VIeW6wq.png

I think you pushed it a little too dark on the clouds and the mountains and sea. I've forgotten the lecture content but he was also talking about the histogram or something.

Anyway the trick was just setting it to black and white from time to time and seeing if you can distinguish stuff like the sea from the whale, the mountain from the sea. Pretty simple but really annoying when it turns out a colour was picked wrong or something.

Keep up the good work
