There are 3 types of cone cells in mammals' eyes responsible for colored vision that each peak at red green and blue respectively. In gist the primary colors correspond with how our our eyesight works.

But the primary colors are red, YELLOW, and blue. And then we can get into print colors where the "best" gamut is cyan, magenta, and yellow, with black to fix up the muddy gray that happens with their mixing and for use in black/white prints.

Traditional primary colors make a balanced gamut for traditional media, however.

only brainlets or people trying to appeal to brainlets use primary colors as staples

>> No.3762752

>>3762747
Depends on the media.

The old masters had to make paint by mixing natural pigments with shit. Want a purple color? Too bad it doesnt fucking exist use brown. Fun fact until industrial revolution most people never seen purple in their life.

With an rgb display the collors are additive 0=black, red + blue = purple

With synthetic printer inks the colors are SUBSTRACTIVE 0 = white. Cmyk color basically substract from the white.
Want to get red? Substract all other colors from the white and you end up with red. Mix all the colors and get black.
The Key black is used because the former is massively wasteful.

oh really? then why it was royalty usually associated with purple? I guess there was no royalty before the industry era eh?

It does depend, yeah, and that's a great breakdown. I was countering red+blue in RGB and yellow in CMYK in the two different, modern colorspaces, which makes RYB nonsensical.

RBY was a good, cheap gamut for paints way back when, but honestly, the modern primary colors should be considered RBG (as it is for digital) or CMY (as it is for print).

>>3762747
why the hell would you put yellow both in the natural set used for drawing and the complimentary set
Red is opposite to cyan
Green is opposite to magenta
Blue is opposite to yellow
RGB are the primary colors of light which is what matters since colors are based on light
RYB is used in some forms of painting to fit things like paint, which behaves in specific ways.
>>3762762
Royalty used purple and rich blues because those were incredibly expensive and hard to create. you are proving his point. It was only synthesized using iron and cyanide (Ferrocyanide) much later for widespread use.
Vsauce2 has a great video about the color blue talking about this and NileRed has a video where he is actually synthesizing Ferrocyanide.

I'm guessing anon means that the primary color model is an outmoded Victorian fabrication that has fuck all to do with color vision or pigment properties. Or possibly that RYB (as opposed to CMY or using all 6 secondaries) is for brainlets and the only people who like the resulting gamut are other brainlets. There's a surprising amount to consider with such a retarded statement.
