What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I'm in love with those sketches. The top right girl face is a bit stretched vertically, might be intentional.

Looks a bit icon-like or graphic with those lines but I don't dislike it, but it kind of flattens out the forms.

Hands are probably the weakest bit, pretty awesome anyways. You could probably push the local value contrast some more, separate them further.

>>3758150
Is the dog biting the top of the head from the person on the right side? It's reads a bit difficult and also makes me think it might just be resting it's head there. I find the idea funny still.
You could probably try to make your eyes more complex, add depth to them even if you go for cartoon looks. Play with the shades and add extra shapes for reflections, think of form and depth.

Leaving some stuff I did to practice special effects and panels. I fucked up the perspective on the first one and I'm not too happy with the hand. Any other critique or comment I'd gladly welcome. Thanks in advance.

I'm joking, I get what you mean, but I'm not really going for such categories, resistances and elements. I guess you can freeze an enemy to make them more brittle but also maybe he is just trying to disable it? Or maybe in a rush and stopping it is enough. I can find many ways to justify it.

It's not really about the tool, I mean you just need to know that if you use lines, some need to be thicker and some thinner or even lost, have a hierarchy, I've seen some pictures around here explaining it.
Anyhow, tools, well one that feels comfortable to you but, just I guess use a small brush first and then go over with a thicker one on those lines that you want thicker, or if you use pressure sensitivity or some other control, then use that to do it on the go.

and slacking means loss of support, i see artists who are a lot better than me with a much smaller following and support simply because they don't post as much, it's ridiculously competitive out there.

thank you. The best thing i can recommend is to keep drawing, but you already know that. Ive been at it for over a decade myself. If you want a little bit more direction though, i'd say really make an effort to visualize what youre trying to draw, and actually go through the motions of drawing in your head. drawing from life is really helpful because it forces you to process the 3d objects youre seeing into something 2d you can draw, rather than just copying pictures line for line. one of the most passively helpful things you can do is just surround yourself with the best art you can find, with as much variety in style as you can manage. Also, aim wayy higher than my level

I like, main 2 criticisms I guess is that her back leg doesn't feel grounded, and I feel it would work better if she was just cat-footed as opposed to lifting the entire foot.

Also the legging armor looks a bit off from the frontal view when comparing it to the side view. Front view looks like it just overlaps as scales, while the side view looks like it protrudes out like a compression spring or something.
But I'm not an armor expert so I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I'd assume the top part of each panel goes downward if it looks like the frontal view?

Here you go, on the left is the original rough sketch. I see the problems you described but not with the shoulder girdle and head. Head's meant to be looking to the side moreso than in the direction of her body, and the shoulder seems fine to me. I hope you don't mind a redline, most of the flaws I see are a lack of fundamentals, I'd suggest going back to anatomy studies before jumping into armor (Which is a completely different beast.)

Another thing is composition, the pose looks off because it doesn't really have a form, I think her right leg on the before sketch looked better, stylized illustrations can get away with these "idealistic" poses for the sake of aesthetics.

sorry for the shit-tier print screen capture...

in original comic strip, PICTURE B and PICTURE A are placed next to each other so it's obvious to readers that both scenes are taken at the same place, which is on top of the building.

what i wonder is if PICTURE A alone is sufficient enough to understand that they are on top of the building looking down the street. i think readers without reading PICTURE B beforehand would not be able to see it. as A contains kinda wonky perspective and poor choice of camera angle.

if it really is, what can i do for this problem?

>> No.3765188

>>3765171
Based on picture B, the city in the background isn't going up a hill, correct? If so, locate your vanishing point based on the main building and draw the city on the horizon. It appears this building is far taller than the ones around it. If the cityscape becomes more discernible than a mass of squares, it should be more clear. Simply increasing the level of detail a tad may help. If it is in perspective and I'm just not noticing it, I would recommend changing the angle so the horizon is more centered. The characters will probably look fine no matter what angle it is, so you might only need to redraw the buildings. A slightly low angle might better communicate that Red is addressing Blue above him as well, but looking good is the no.1 priority, I think.

Also, move Blue's dialogue bubble into negative space, as it obscures too much of the city. You could make picture A the same width as B by expanding the right side of the canvas and drawing more city in at the same time. I think that would make for a more interesting composition.

That aside, no meaningful information is communicated beyond Red's hand, so you can also crop that side to make more space to the right. Cutting off Blue's butt might ruin the composition, though. So I'll leave it to you to figure it out.

Pic A is definitely sufficient imo. You could bump it up a little bit more for extra emphasis if you wanted. Some ideas I have are widening the shot on the right side a little to show some more of the city, and dropping a dark color over the city part to help separate it from the foreground. You could probably also do away with that strange cement overhang, it doesn't read as believable architecture to me. I'd either shift the red head to be leaning more clearly against that wall below the sniper or put a ledge/rim down along the bottom that the redhead can use for an arm rest in that position. One other thing for flourish if you want, some steamy clouds rising from the streets could add a lively feel.

Not him, but I like how it draws out to reveal the city. It's like an expansion of space and has more impact. Establishing shots are overrated.

The first panel just isn't done as effectively as it could atm.

Well compared to many other anime artist my lineart is considered pretty messy already because I didn't use a dedicated layer for inking, I only draw on 1 layer as if you're drawing on paper traditionally, and then I use eraser to erase the sketch lines away. I also tend to draw lines with a quick, long stroke instead of multiple shorter stroke. This is what works for me but YMMV.

For reference, >>3752441 is my earlier sketch.

Picture A has a couple of problems that could be fixed.
That overhanginging roof that's connecting to the roof that the sniper is on is unnecessary, doesn't make sense architecturally, and confuses the reader into thinking it might be some kind of avant garde structure.
Freckle's sitting posture does not convey that they're on a tall building at all. No one would ever lean into the abyss like that.

Gonna agree with some other anons and say picture A is kinda off. From a paneling and story perspective it's fine. But it means the building is oddly built and confused the reader. I'd have no idea shes under sniper girl if she wasnt in pic A too.
Just move her on top of the roof imo.

Hey friends, hope you're doing well! Please tell me if these concept sketches look too tumblr-y and how they can be improved. I know that Perry's book-holding hand is bad and that the shading on Casper doesn't make sense. Any other glaring flaws?

Also wouldn't be opposed to advice on making a comic, which is what these characters are for. I'm struggling with trying to pin down detail, and how much I should put into each character since I'm not a mangaka with many assistants at my disposal. Should I only draw enough to get the point across or is that too lazy? And with character design, I've always tried to have every piece of clothing inform of their character, do you think that comes across with these ones? Do you have any impressions about what you think these characters would be like? Thanks so much for your help! Sorry if I'm in the wrong place and for the text wall!

Hi. New to the board. Sorry if this is not the right place to ask, didn't find a QTDDTOT thread. Also: I know barely nothing about illustration.

I've noticed some drawings which have really caught my eye because of how to color/shading looks. It reminds me of 3D renders, but they are actually illustrations. Did they actually start as 3D renders, and then drawn over? Or is this just a very elaborate shading practice that can be achieved without CG references?

Not critiquing, I think they look very catchy, I'm just a bit confused.

I'll post some examples by this artist.

I use CSP too and I've also been wondering how to get an effect like this. My general understanding of the process is that you put down a hard shape and then use the Water brush in Sai or other blending brushes to draw out the soft edge. I've experimented with a few things, the oil brushes, the 'smooth' watercolor brush, and the 'paint and apply' watercolor brush. I've had the closest desired effects using the blending tool though. You can add texture and shape variance to the blending tool too which would probably help.

learn to use the mix ground settings or blur tool. it's a simple rendering thing, not much to do with brushes. he knows how to paint ao. you could use temp layers and a soft brush with the color picker to get a similar effect but taking longer
