How the fuck do you get good at drawing this shit, you look at traditional tutorials and explanations for rules and pulls and shit then glance at your shirt or anyone and bang all those rules mean fucking nothing half the folds feel random as fuck FUCK

Have you tried any drawing from real-life observation yet? If you do it enough, you start to notice patterns that allow you to categorize different types of folds into groups. It becomes a lot easier after that

Yes and it only got me even more confused because, like I said, it feels completely random.

buy every costume you ever need and bring them out when you need them
let your art become one with your cloth

Shirts are OK once you practice the folds a lot and you get the idea of how they go with the body, it's true that you never get just one type of fold but with enough practice you can manipulate the folds and mix them up. It's shit like bedsheets that is fucking impossible to reproduce from imagination because it's completely random and the folds are not really folds but shallow creases

What fucks me up is long dresses when a character is doing any kind of dynamic pose that messes the fabric, like sitting or kneeling.

Yeah just take a piece of fabric like a table cloth and let it fall and look at how it scrunches up on the ground. That kind of inert fold is a pain in the ass, just use a cloth for reference

don't worry, the others can tell it's your pants, nobody think you are that big

The trick is to interpret what you see, not autistically copy each and every crease. Look at a bent sleeve and think 'what's the primary fold to indicate a bent arm? Oh right, the half-lock', look at someone stretching and think 'I'll need to emphasize the stretch folds here' and so on. Don't look at folds as detached from the figure and gesture, they should communicate something.

It doesn't have to be realistic, just convincing
