Repostin from last tread

Any help with the fg? I'm not sure how to approach it, due to all the stuff going, it either doesn't read or the colors are bad (or both).

Will it be sufficient to clean up the bg, or does something more need to be done?

>> No.3751307

Like what you're doing stylistically.

The chin looks weird, like it's being pushed way the fuck up into his face. Eyes look a little close together. Nose looks detached from where the rest of the face is going. Just try playing around with those parts and see where that gets you.

Darken the crab. They look too close making the crab and scene lose it sense of scale, it's clear the crab is far away but he feels close.

>>3751303
go as basic as you can get away with on the foreground. Couple of kelp frond silhouettes maybe. Once you get rid of the sketch framework on the ships in the bg it'll look way less cluttered. Blur / desaturate them a bit.

Pose-wise it looks like the bear is aiming to the right of the picture instead of where the crab is. Maybe adjust the leading leg a little bit.

Cool pic tho bro

Did you learn more or less than with shorter paintings? The waves look really good on the foreground boat, there's the two at the side of the picture that look kind of peaking symmetrically a tad. You could probably change one more, twist the most to the right so it points to the background boat for instance for composition.
Looks really good, damn those waves really have a ton of energy below that boat.

Firstly some perspective would help; even a little bit of foreshortening from the closer shoulder to the further one.

If you're talking about lighting, that shadow on her right arm (viewers left) doesn't make sense. The cast shadows everywhere don't make sense as well (under chin, under hair line), the should be in line with the direction of light.

Vary your line sizes, use less lines. It'll look a lot less boring.

>> No.3753938

>>3753924
I''d say if you're going to use that thick line as an "outline" to the picture, also use it to create an illusion of depth (as you've done between the chest/non-gun arm).
The top of the pants, the folds at the bottom, all the outlines of the gun, they all don't "pop" out because the line weight is the same.

you have terrible line quality. and your color choices and placement are bad. pen is different from pencil is different from charcoal is different from oil is different from watercolor is different from digital. there's always a learning curve with mediums but a sturdy foundation will help bridge the gaps. alternatively, some people put paper on their screenless tablets to get rid of that squeaky feel.

In my opinion - you're tackling form too early in the process.

Form should come AFTER your SHAPE is defined. If you only worry about shapes first, you have more freedom and a higher chance of coming up with more visually unique thumbnails for further development. Form can always come later but a muddled silhouette (not talking about this drawing specifically) is beyond saving.

A for effort, but are you doing a five value exercise or are you just making a painting?
If it's the former, there's no way you could've squinted properly and still got this much detail in.
Squint, zoom out or both until all detail becomes unrecognizable and draw the big blobby shapes of value. Make it read just like the reference and you're on the right track.

I think it would be best if you did a couple of thumbnails working out the overall lighting and composition to decide on what background. Your idea for it is good but if you want to execute it cohesively starting from the semi-rendered figure you already have is going to be harder.
>>3753822
You've used cheap white tones instead of having the glass refract the beautiful blue of the glowing liquid in it, there is almost no interaction between the vessel and its contents. Glass is wonderful to paint because it picks up notes of color from its surrounding and contents, you'll notice that if you try a still-life of it.

really awkward tangents and unbalance on the right side of the image. the foliage seems like it drops out or reduces in size way too quickly only a few yards away. i wouldn't put the shooting star behind the tree. personally too your values seem too compressed or there's a lack of general ambient occlusion which makes everything too ungrounded and seem pasted on or just floating there. i'd maybe push out the left vanishing point further as it makes the far building look really distorted.

overall i have no idea what your composition is making me look at. the first thing my eye sees is the tower and flag, then down to the plants then up and around to the shooting star, or maybe before the plants my eye goes to that very low detail tree in the middle. you should check out jack hamm's landscape book. it is an incredible resource for composition.

The drawing itself is off, her right arm is way too skinny, her mouth is off center, her ear is weird, but these are all drafting critiques that you’ll improve as you draw more and more. For the actual water coloring, you only actually appear to be taking advantage of the medium in the background. You’re being way too concsious in painting the subject, you could get that result with colored pencils or markers. Generally, using true black is poor form in watercolors (or actually in most media especially digital, in oils it’s typical to just mix a dark warm and cool like ultramarine blue and burnt sienna). Be bolder and experiment. I recommend starting a new piece, if you really like this subject, then redo this piece. We have thousands of bad/mediocre paintings in us that we have to get out of the way until we are where we at. Often you’ll spend hours on a piece and maybe a day later try the same subject and get a better result in a fraction of the time.

anyway, there's so much it'd be nitpicking. major anatomy issues would be the left hand, the left shoulder, her ear, the nose pointing straight at us instead of being in perspective.

color wise it reads horribly. turn it greyscale and you'll see some things. hell, even look at just the thumbnail. you have a very saturated and dark red next a saturated blue which just makes my eyes buzz. then you have the pale hand next to the pink which also looks bad. you need contrast in the value and saturation of these parts. the sand looks horrible, the bushes and beach do nothing to improve this color or composition wise. the sky doesn't make much sense color wise, maybe try working with lighter washes and wet into wet. the figure and hair is mostly colored fine although i'd probably add some shadow tones to the hair because it's not just one color.

The cools in shadow are usually from the ambient reflected skylight so you might want to be more consistent about that. Digital is all about lines or rendering, if you're good both. If you can't see in 3D inside your head, you need to get back to traditional and work on construction and perspective.

Digital is much more straightforward than traditional, I feel. You draw and what you draw is what you get. With a pencil you have to keep in mind the shape of the tip, the hardness of the pencil, how thin the paper is and how easy it is to blend textures or make lines thicker. None of this exists in digital, hence why sometimes strokes can feel "off".

Sweet. The only constructive feedback I would like to give is that you should vary the details a little, as in, don't give every part of the image the same amount of detail. This will guide the viewers attention.

However you could also fix that by giving it a less detailed background so the foreground character is the detailed part.

Once you realize that rhythm, contrast and harmony are not just dots and lines from stupid textbook exercises but rather principles underlying all natural design, you might be on the right track.

The simplest way to figure it out is to save pictures that are appealing to you or trigger certain emotions and after you have a bunch, you'll start noticing patterns among them.

>> No.3759828

And by patterns I mean just that, rhythm contrast and harmony, which are the most universal ones, but there are many more, see Gestalt principles.
It all comes down to biology, our brain evolved through millions of years of life in nature, so the principles nature uses to build plants and trees and fire and air are appealing to us.

Damn, that looks nice! You've done an amazing job on the waves. You might want to have a little more atmospheric perspective to emphasize the distance between the ships. There's still something that's bugging me with the bow of the ship closest to us. The perspective just seems a little wonky. I tried to do an overpainting but I couldn't get it right either. If this was my own piece I'd probably go to 3D software and do a quick test to figure this shit out...

Aye, I think you piece is fucking awesome and it has a lot of potential so here's my 5 cents:

Commit to your lighting choices. If there's a light that's making a highlight on her nose it's definitely also going to make a highlight on that mask on her head and other parts of her face. Also the eye patch and everything else. Looks like it's a reflective material like porcelain(?) so boost that shit up. If there's a green ambient light from the top/top right you commit to that too. It's going to hit the mask and you might also see it in the shadow areas and even her skin.

I got rid of the rim light on her nose. If you want to have a rim light you also have to commit to that. the same light that's hitting her nose would also hit her cheek and eye etc. so it didn't make sense to me at all. I'm guessing that you're thinking that it was coming from that glowing ball thing but I think it looks better if it just hits her weird stringy arm... Also be consistent with the highlights on her weird stringy parts.

I don't know if she's supposed to be a child or what ever but you need to have some semblance of shape on her torso. I don't really have a ton of time to do these overpaints so did a terrible job and just kinda made her look like one of those Mortal Kombat bitches in their fighting pose. It definitely doesn't need to be what I did but you do need to do something about that. Now her body just kind of looks like a wooden plank with fabric pinched over it.

Some of this crap was probably stuff that you were going to do anyway since your piece wasn't done yet so I'm sorry if I'm pointing shit out that you already noticed. Also, I'm just some fucking hobo and I don't really know anything about anything so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

>> No.3760039

>>3760037

Fuck, I lost a paragraph:

If there's nothing to see at the bottom area of the image, you've already established that she's in some kind of smog so you just smog that shit up! You don't want us to look there so there's no shame in blurring that area out.

That's everything I had to say. Back to work!

Very nice crit and paint over my dude. Would also add that some edge variation would be nice. The edges used aren’t wrong but spell everything out for the viewer too much imo. This could be subjective on my part though, I enjoy pieces where I have to work a bit and there’s a good amount of abstraction. Also the shoulders look too high and wide but I’m not really sure what the anatomy of this character is supposed to be so that might be on purpose? Solid piece all around though.
