Thought it'd be nice to see what folks are most proud of from their 2018 body of work, and to hear some reflections on the past year. It doesn't necessarily need to be your best work - just the piece(s) you're most happy with & proud of how it turned out.

What's your favorite piece that you made in 2018 - and why is it your favorite?

Was 2018 a good year for your art? Did you meet some of your art related goals, or make as much progress as you thought you might?

My favourite work this year is probably this one but I drew a lot that I really liked and didn't hate after drawing. I went through my folder and I'm pretty happy that I drew a lot this year even if most of them are just unfinished sketches.
My aim for next year is to draw more finished work and draw a comic

it's my fav because it uses my favorite colors. i dont know how i did in 2018 but i worked really hard so you know what ... maybe that's all that matters

I’ve thought of returning to pixel brushes because they remind me of drawing on Flipnote. For what I’m not sure yet but I think it’d be cool as a nostalgic thing if I ever decided to return to my old work. Well done!

I like this quite a bit. If you didn’t want to finish the whole thing but decided to go over it with grey tones in the future, it would look really good! Imo it’s a nice way of wrapping up wips quickly and making them pop without spending too much time on a project that you’re already tired with.

Well 2018 has been my best year since it's when I first started practicing. This wasn't ever finished, but it's the first time I painted something on Photoshop and learned that with enough time I can make things look great so I'm very happy with it. My first time polishing something I guess, now I get why Deviantart shitters can't draw but learn to render like gods; it's really fun to just sit there using every tool you can find.

And this one is my true favorite even if it has no color, because it looks close enough to the anime and I was looking at no reference. All of those hours practicing how to draw heads with Proko and friends paid off, I can just do a circle and make it into a recognizable anime face.
Also I was content enough with the bodies even if I can see flaws with it. Now I'm confident in sketching anime if a friend asks me to, even if it's just a standing pose.

This is my best piece so far, and I’ve still got a long, long way to go, especially with backgrounds and perspective, but I’m just happy the hands don’t look like spaghetti bundles anymore

This one, i think it's the best i've made, and it's fun that it started as some junky sketch jand i kept working at it until it feel good to watch it.

I almost don't do it btw, just something to be out of my confort zone.

I think it was a good year overall. Filled another 100 page sketchbook to the point i need to draw over the previews drawings that i've made bc don't have blank space anymore.

Did values studies for the first time, found /ic/, and with that the artbook thread which have been a very good resources place

I want to get into comics, made (pencilled) around 15 pages in the whole year (which is not a lot to be honest, i wish i made more) but hey, it's a start.

Tried the g-pen and bristol pages for the first time, and hoping to try out some other materials in the future.

Overall it was nice, but i hope to do more next year. Oh and sorry for the wall text and the writing errors, still getting into english.

I try to ween myself off references, but its torturous to see how bad everything turns out when I rely on imagination alone. This one, it's probably not the best but still a big leap forward in defining my new style. I love drawing landscapes, animals, nature and this year I had a lot of freedom to explore this subject matter. My only goal at the beginning of this year was to keep my full time job and i didn't even manage to do that... So not a very good year proffessionally. In 2019 I just want to develop my freelance career, it's been hard but for now i can't think of a better plan.

Thanks anon! I only have two of my illustrations hanging on my wall but they do serve a motivating purpose. My friends who go to art school all say I have good ideas but need to improve my technical understanding/skills so I'm stoked you basically echoed their sentiments.

There's a local atelier that offers a handful of interesting classes at affordable prices, so I'll be going there part-time. I also have to get the fundamentals down since I'm self-taught.

I've also decided on an artistic style I'd like to develop. I really enjoy gothic surrealism, manga, and ink illustration so I'm going to try and blend them once I learn proper techniques. Super stoked for 2019 and I sincerely hope you have a great year as well!

Finished this at the very end of the year, I think it's a great wrap-up for me in 2018. Didn't finish the background until after the New Year.
I think I did good in 2018, I made more art than I ever had before.

i like it a lot but i wish you spent a little more time clarifying the forms between the eyes, breasts and hands and feet. also a sword would be much better suited in my opinion as the club seems very heavy and the figure doesnt account for that although if i remember correctly this was for a friends D&D character or something so it cant be helped.

Maybe have her resting her arm extended with the hand on the pommel of the club and the tip of the club right next to her foot? that way you could extend the light in that area over the foot and render it out as a minor focal point

It's more so I feel like I haven't progressed to the amount I'd hope, plus a lot of personal shit is effecting my work output as I lost pretty much everyone from family, friends and finally gf and I got one friend left now. Sorry I'm blogging but I'm adamant that this has been the worst year of my life so far, though I try see me losing them as a benefit as now I have very little distractions. If I keep positive 2018 might of just been the storm before the calm, here's to 2019.
