Most artists above decent level started out as poorfags. People living comfortable lives have no reason to put themselves through the hell that is learning art past the point of mediocrity. Not true, most traditional artists started out as richfags with lots of financial support to get them through art school pre mid 20th century. Maybe they lived bohemian lives in paris or whatever away from their parents but they could always go back to mommy and daddy when things got rough for money.

This. Anyone who honestly thinks a poorfag in early modern Europe could support an artist's lifestyle is a dunce. Not only would they likely starve to death, but most except for a select lucky few would have absolutely zero visibility to wealthy art patrons. "People who just go to art school" include about every old master who ever lived. Very few were self taught without any formal education.
