IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3700560 (Cross-thread)

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unredpilled, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

Learning digital tools is something you must do Anon there is no way around it the same way you need to learn how to drive a car to drive a car. Fret not the basics of CSP isn't much different from Photoshop or SAI or MSPaint really. If you know nothing of digital tools then t will be a pain and likely take a long time (like a few days up to weeks depending you have got the time). But it is a skill that pays massive dividends in the long term. While you are in the process of learning digital you can study anatomy on paper too, the web has a ton of tutorials, Loomis has anatomy tutorials too.

Now on digital tools

If you have no access to booklets and don't want to take a course and no other option are open I suggest scouring youtube(or google for tutorial pictures), there are plenty of newbie tutorials around for almost every popular software that teaches you the basics of using digital tools.

I would suggest starting with Paintool SAI because that is the most basic digital painting tool (that is not shit like MSPaint) that is really useful and widely popular and since it is free there is likely the most tutorial videos available.

Goodspeed Anon!

By taking breaks often anon, I know this sounds weird but taking frequent short breaks is an essential part of the process. Remember even Vilpu said that "Art is basically problem solving." If you just stop and take a break while you are doing your construction/planning/sketching/etc to tear your gaze away from it and break the concentration process and clear your head then come back in 2 minutes without looking at it your mind had enough time to readjust itself to a more critical and problem solving mindset and get a more objective view on the work.

Just try it do it the pace you feel comfortable, take a break in a timed manner like every 20 minutes or take breaks at certain step of your drawing, like when you completed the base planning but haven't put down a solid line yet or when you are starting to feel frustrated with it. Whenever it happens take a short break and let the steam out and ease your mind into critical and problem solving mode. Then come back take a look at it from far away and think. do not just jump right into it. stay an think about you typical mistakes you know about if they are there.

IMO eyes are too large compared to face; forehead too small. Even as a "dwarf", try to get your proportions right (I know it's a meme but Fun With Pencil - Loomis).

Entire drawing looks 2D. Go find Proko's videos on eyes, ears and mouth and look at how he constructs each feature in a 3 dimensional shape.

I am not good at cartoons at all but here are some ideas anon.

Your characters seem to all be meek and bored give them more lively poses and expressions. Make sure their posture is balance and not falling over.

Simplify! You seem to be lost in the details, details are good if the basics are sound. Take a step back and simplify your characters give them dot eyes for awhile until you are comfortable with them.

Proportions, styleiziation is fine and all but unless you go for abstraction there is a limit on how much you can go before your characters turn into static caricatures instead of "living and moving" ones. Try to keep the basic proportions of the body in mind like torso-leg ratio, arm-leg ratio, arm-body ratio etc. If you keep these you can draw a lot different looking humanoid characters and still make them look alright.

Perspective, put your characters on the ground, make their feet angle downwards since that is how the ground appear if you look down from a standing perspective. Use curves and circular lines instead of straight lines, using straight lines can make a picture look very flat.

I just started learning how to draw last week and this is my first attempt at something. If I want to draw manga someday, do I just focus on practicing how to imitate anime characters? And how do I get rid of "chicken scratch"?

>> No.3705796

>>3705769
Here's my thinking on the issue. I have a lot of free time to draw, so I like to split my time between doing genuine study and practicing the things I like.
So I might spend an hour doing traditional figure drawings, and then I'll spend another doing free-form sketches.
You're more than welcome to copy art you like if it helps you learn (just don't try to pass it off as your own), but also keep the fundamentals in mind - as that's how you'll get the most out of it.
Try to reverse engineer the art you're copying and figure out how they did it, rather than just making a raw, thoughtless copy.

Chicken scratch is easy enough to iron out, just try to accept the lines you've drawn rather than assembling it piecemeal.

Still very much a beginner despite three years of art-school.

I am lacking in a lot of departments, I mostly stick to drawing and penmanship (in which I am no means a master either) but I want to branch into more painterly aspects.

I'm having a big issue of creating contrasting elements in my pieces, pic related.

Are there any specific theories or ways to approach my issue? I've seen some links in regards to color theory, but I also wanted to hear a general critique as well, if anyone is up for it.

Thank you.

" I see myself using the circle tool very often to try and get a perfect head but not really too sure what I'm doing here."
Why? The point isn't to get a "perfect" circle, but a near enough approximation to measure the rest of the features.

Try Proko's "How to draw the head from any angle" on Youtube, maybe the circle drawing will make more sense after seeing a live demo.

Anon I don't want to be rude to you but I think you shouldn't focus on finding your style. Your style is something that will emerge as you create and improve. A style is the culmination of your skills, preferences and tastes and you are comfortable creating. I think a "style" is not something that you suddenly find, a style is something that is not a constant and fixed thing, it changes all the time as you keep growing and experiencing more and get influenced by others. And it will continue to change until you reach a certain level but that will take quite awhile.

Improving your "realism" if you wish to call it that way will also help your style to emerge, in fact studying the works of other people will also help it. So just relax and keep creating and doing your improvement, keep exposing yourself to new things and and pushing your boundaries.

3. Repeat 1 and 2 until you can draw anything comfortably and confidently
4. Start copying your favorite artists and learning their visual language
5. Frankenstein your own amalgamated style from bits and pieces of your favorite artists' styles

That's pop art. The basic idea is to color everything like it's the most important and coolest thing in the world, if that makes any sense.
Use extremely high contrast, forget about every shade of lightning that isn't pure white or pitch-black, and forget about any nuance in your color palette. Make everything pop, basically.

you aren’t drawing the round shapes at the same angle as the cube first of all. to make it work you need to think of the round shapes as spheres, and position them the correct way. also isometric art is usually done at a higher angle, i don’t think this angle is working for you. basically, think of making 3d shapes in 2d

One thing I would recommend doing is thinking about how the anatomy of a human body works. Right now it looks like you aren't quite getting that overall, the biggest example being the head. You're focused on the shape of the hair that you see on her head, rather than what her skull is underneath, making it look like her head just got crushed by a baseball bat. Sketch out the head and then add the hair on after.

You're proportions aren't too bad, its just the foreshortening happening in some areas like the arm on the wall making it look wonky. Like it's not that far off.

I think you are doing fine, and yes, more time practicing is always good!

Generally the two things when doing shadows is avoid using black or what you've said, the same color but with a darker value.
Generally you would want a cooler color (based off a purple or blue) unless the overall lighting of your drawing is already using those colors.

One thing you could do is take a good piece of art you like, throw it in Photoshop || whatever you use (editing on a phone might work, but it'll probably look shit), and boost the saturation all the way up. You can then see the different colors that are used/harder to see that exist in different areas of the image and try too recreate that in your own drawings.

when you draw in life you have to translate a 3D image to a 2D canvas, so you're forced to think about things in 3D and draw them as such

Not the guy you're asking, but for me it depends on the difficulty of the pose, and how confident I am in my understanding of the anatomy.

I'll free-hand it if it's something I've pretty much done before, but when it's a totally wild pose, then you can bet your ass I'm constructing it.

yes, always. unless i'm doing something like a 30 second gesture or want to test if I'm familiar with a specific object, i always construct. working from big shapes to carve them into small ones seems like the easiest way to get anything done imo.

It will make a difference when you are doing more complicated things Anon. Because the world is not static.

I learned this in art class when we had to draw a white statue head using only the sunlight from the window in the afternoon which took 2-3 hours. However the teacher didn't warn us that the sun will move (obviously) so no matter how we tried to draw it the way it looked it didn't work because the sunlight kept inching away and subtly changing how it looked.

Trust me Anon drawing from life is different than drawing fro ma photo, yes it is subtle but you will notice it if you start doing it more.

Hey guys, what to study first to become beg, and after that what's the order?
I've started Loomis' Fun With a Pencil and alright, it's fun. But he jumps from basic structures to rendered product in a flash and I can't do it because I cant fucking draw eyes or nose or details at all.
The sticky is all over the place, so I need a clearer answer. Basically, am I on the right track with Fun With a Pencil? Should I study Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain or equivalent first?
Btw I mix in lines and circles exercises from Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching course, it helps with Loomis, but then what? Still can't do details.
Please help guys.

I was doing Fun with Loomis earlier and thought the same, try doing Proko's video Draw a head from any angle and finish the entire series, draw like 20 heads per video because getting down the proportions helped me out a lot. Once you establish the rules in your head continue on with his series because he gets into the finer details that the loomis book does not.

It's also so much better seeing him draw it and explain it than reading it and drawing five circles every page.

You only have yourself to blame if you quit doing something.
Instead of quitting, how about doing something simple like CHANGING the way that you have did it before?

topmost one has a lot of problems mostly with the face being very flat. Your center line shouldn't go straight down from the hairline, it should conform to the curvature of the face. The gesture on the neck is also incredibly stiff. Your bottom illustrations are much better but still suffer from some of the same flaws of the top one. Cheers and keep at it!

The nose faces to the left more than the eyes and most notably the mouth is uneven and the chin pushes out forwards too much while the cheekbone is flat giving the face a flat impression. Also add more light on the face, the highlight spot in the eyeball indicates that the light comes from forwards so feel free to increase the light on the checks nose and forehead.

She is quite cute, the standing one is out of balance heavily towards her left unless she is having huge feet and flaw on the ground she would likely fall over. I tried to put the legs a bit wider and pulled the head back to the right to compensate.

Humanoid fantasy races with large tails are difficult to draw because the tail is the continuation of the spine and if the tail is not bending backwards horizontally it would be troublesome for he to walk on two legs. For this reason the hips are usually tilted heavily forwards which pushed the butts out and make the lower curve of the spine very sharp to compensate for standing up straight. You can study this in WoW's draenei females very well for example how different their entire pelvic area is, there are several tutorials on the web on how to draw draenei women's hips (for scientific reasons of course). Check these out.

Finding balance on the body's stature is key importance when creating fantasy creatures.

The other thing is the shadows, judging from the highlights the light seems to be strong and coming from all over a bit chaotically yet the shadows are weak all over the place try to keep the lights and shadows balanced in both intensity and detail you pent much more time on the highlights than on the shadows when in reality the shadows tend to be much more prominent.

I tried to illustrate this a bit on the redraw. But even so still you had adorable results on your own, well done.

>> No.3710247

>>3710212
That is way better Anon, decrease the area of the highlights on the lips and put it only it to the left side that will make the mouth less turned towards the camera.

Increase the backside of the skull a but her head seem to be a too flat

Also increase the shading between the eye and the nose area where the eyeball meets with the nose there is a shadow on the top because the bones of the nose and the eyebrow bridge creates a crevice.

I decided to take a shot, obviously this is heavily anatomically incorrect.

I used a no opacity, no size jitter brush to try and break from my line drawing habits, but I found myself trying to sneak my way back into drawing lines.

Have I succeeded in employing a full range of values successfully? Does the lighting make some sort of sense?

It is great that you are pushing your comfort zone Anon good job at that. The lighting makes sense personally I would use less white highlight spots. This is really nice, I can see the relative flatness of my snake. In a newer work I've been trying to achieve the same look you've made, specifically how the black outlines are sort of taken over by the colors, and how one color transitions into another without an ugly black line in between. This is obviously a very basic thing but I have never colored my pieces before the few I posted, so I'm a beginner on that front. Do you make a layer over the linework for the flat skin color, and then add the light and shadows onto that layer? I noticed some lines in your drawing are identical to those in the original with the exception of being a dark shade of green rather than black, meaning that you didn't trace or redraw them but rather painted over them with a slightly opaque brush. Did you use the same brush while recoloring the entire thing?

I use fundies of light as the baseline to put down a light source somewhere I know it is a cliche at this point but it all goes back to the basics from Sycras light fundamental tutorial series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q-LZVFZuGE

That is the basic logic, after that, just personal taste and laziness. When dealing with challenging things or I just don't want to complicate things I prefer to have the light source fixed on one side of the face. That makes it easier to find the geography of the face which is my eternal nightmare.

It can also serve kind of a rim light too but that is not realistic and I know it is not realistic but it makes things easier.

Shitty attempt to show it man working with a brush like this is PAINFUL!

Since with yours I can only use the flattened image you posted with no layers I can only work with a layer above the image.

After linework is done I usually color the larger things under it then put a new layer over it and overpaint it as you said, however this is time consuming process because you literally almost work twice on the same image do it is double the work. With your work obviously I didn't need to do that since you already made it so I had it easy.

I try to keep the lineart loose and thin so that when I overpaint I have less to worry about and only start doing the details on the overpaint to save some workload. You can also try that you create mask layer above your image and add color to your line work that is close to the local colors around it but not the same and not pure black, that makes it easier because the black lines are mighty distracting and can leave ugly dirtmarks while you try to cover them all.

As for brushes I have two brushes one solid and one which has pen pressure on opacity and I color pick a lot, I sometimes use the smudge tool as well for larger surfaces.

I am trying the bush and render method from the video this Anon's post has >>3710358

In this picture horizon line doesnt matter because perspective is minimized because youre looking at it from far away. but its somewhere armpit or above imo

I've been practising gesture drawing on Line-Of-Action/Quickposes for the past few months, kinda feel like I'm stagnating. Do I need to grind more or practice fundies since I think I may be symbol drawing, since sometimes I fudge a joint even when I'm looking right at it?

focus on completing the lines on a piece before adding tone.

Try construction, the more you practice the more you can do it mentally without having to do it manually

also try to observe the detail in your reference, you missed out the curves of the nose and the left side of the brow.

charcoal from imagination. I'd really appreciate a simple redline on this as I don't know construction and it would be very interesting to see where I make the wrong turns etc.

I'm having a LOT of trouble with the legs, i can't get them right. This pose is gonna be the last key of a fast animation in which this character stands up, so i chose to keep the body perspective and silhouette clearer, althogh technically wrong given the context.
But the goddamn legs, i just don't know how to make them part of an appealing pose. Every option i go for is just ugly.
Any kind of help is appreciated

It's me again, doing doodles once more as well as some poses. What can I do so that my shit doesnt look so flat. Also what can I do to better imagine how the rectangles are meant to be turned for my gestures? It takes me way too long to draw up a simple pose because i can't imagine it

The pose is still because she is bored/frustrated sitting by the table with something frustrating in her mind, it is supposed to be stiff that is how someone feels in her situation.

it's because the head/neck doesn't connect to the torso. the torso also isn't in the same warped perspective as your lines indicate on the ground plane- i'll just do a drawover nvm
