It might be an immature desire to get away “from it all” but I’m really drawn to the idea of hitchhiking across Europe, sleeping rough and couch surfing, visiting galleries and woods and little villages and talking to people, drawing en site and while I take buses, hitchhike etc. I would like to do it for an extended period since I have some crypto money saved up.

I’m just worried that this is a knee jerk action that won’t get me closer to my goal of being a great illustrator, but perhaps the journey would change that goal or redefine it somehow.
I know I’m definitely romanticising it but that’s okay too, would be good to get a dose of reality and see if I can stick it through

Have you ever done something like this?

Traveling can be sort of a full time thing all on its own, so just be sure to find ways to make sure you have enough motivation/energy to draw. I personally get too excited about my surroundings when traveling to focus seriously, but maybe that's not you.

I had an idea of a barrel that you mount on top of your car that you can sleep in, and it has a sliding cockpit hatch so you can sit up and paint scapes and shit from the comfort of your own carbed. Want to drive around the US and paint memes in front of scenic vistas.

That’s true! Good perspective. I think I will have to adjust my pace and take it slow enough to be able to draw a lot each day before moving on. If I’m going to be spending 5+hours inside my head drawing, I might as well spend the rest of the time in nature and exploring places

I'd love to in theory but I'm literally a recovering hiki so I'm certain in reality I'd just have a complete breakdown from the stress.

It's becoming more and more viable with each passing year

With mobile phones you can realistically have internet almost everywhere wirelessly and charge all your electrical devices for free at fast food restaurants and trains

You can make a living doing freelance art with a laptop and a tablet entirely online

You can almost live without a permenant address, online banking, online taxes, online freelance work

I'd say in another 5-10 years you will begin to see alot of people who have jobs in web development, art and other internet based jobs going around the country in vans

You can do it anon! You’re tougher than you think if you can already deal with the existential stress of neetdom
>>3689652
That sounds like a very viable future for a lot of people, I imagine a tricky part would be balancing having a social life since van living can be pretty isolating on top of the isolation of spending 8+ hours in your own head drawing and the rest researching, driving around and fixing your van, but lots of people could make it work.

I motorcycled down to Texas from Canada for a few weeks on my own with a similar motivation. It was also a bit of a sudden thing, after I had lost my job, but I still gave myself over a month to plan. I wanted to paint and draw, turns out I was either to preoccupied or just exhausted and sweaty most of the time, but it was still a great experience and I'd love to do it again.
It was great just doing something really hard on my own, and getting encouragement from tons of strangers along the way. There was no big revelation, but my wanderlust definitely died down after that. I'd still love to do something like that again, and hopefully plan it out better to get some painting done this time.
Good luck friend!

Yes, when I hitchhike/travel alone or with an artist friend it's both productive and very enjoyable. Plenair painting is refreshing if you already learnt some basics, though first paintings are gonna suck anyway, but after a while it only gets better. Though I agree if you do hitchhiking/camping it can become a full time thing on it's own but all depends on your pace. You'll have adventures, and stories and experiences will be great materials for future works and inspiration. Take your favorite materials but be open to try new things, look for inspiration around you and from different artists works. You can start with a few smaller trips to try this out but in my experience you need a few weeks to get into it, so don't be hard at yourself at first and expect anything amazing, just have fun finding what works for you. Completely recommending you doing this, but if you actually have decent money I'd split it to go on a few 1-2 month painting holidays every half a year/year after you progress a bit and get tired of everyday life. Good luck!
